  1. I was also on this cruise (Barcelona to NYC) and during the voyage I was offered the opportunity to sign up for (free) transportation to JFK to include a city tour as my homeward flight was not until the evening.  I'm glad I took advantage of it (once I found the bus - no-one to tell me, once I had collected my luggage, that I needed to go up a level rather than just exit onto the street).

The tour was excellent - free time at the 9/11 memorial, time for lunch in the Macys area and then a comprehensive tour of various JFK terminals dropping us off.  I saw more of the NY boroughs in those few hours then I did after spending several days in NYC!  Recommended.

From another Crystal refugee--although our last visits were a series of 2014-2015 cruises on "Symphony":

You advised your first Regent cruise will be on October 3rd.  If that is "Mariner" at Los Angeles--then we will be shipmates.

Many prior cruises on Mariner, as well as other Regent ships.  You will enjoy the experience.

    GOARMY!

Yes, that's the one.  I have every expectation I will have a wonderful time.  Can't wait to get back on a ship!

  3. I am yet another Crystal refugee and currently have two Regent cruises booked, the first leaving on October 3.  I have seen mentions of this Ambassador Programme and am wondering if I am too late to take advantage of it, bearing in mind the booking is all set up via my TA and I have paid my deposit (final payment not due yet)?  I'd be grateful for your advice.

  4. Thanks so much for your sunrise/sunset photos, Roy.  I am thoroughly enjoying them and hope it's not too long before I am seeing the real things from a ship!  I am booked on Serenity from Miami on January 5 but have little hope it will sail.  Keep up the good work!

  5. We went by train from Nice to Paris at the end of an Avalon cruise this summer. I was hoping for a very scenic ride but in truth the train passes through countryside mostly, and in many cases in a cutting, so views are

not that great. The best bit was leaving Nice as the train followed the coast. In hindsight, I wished we had flown as it took all day and then, because the TGV was late, we missed our Eurostar connection.

  6. We sailed on the Lord Byron last July on their Rhine & Moselle cruise. The ship is designated a 5* and was brand new at that time. Both the Lord Byron and the William Shakespeare were made by Scylla AG and the interiors are identical.

Riviera is a long-established British company who provide a good product at a reasonble price. They didn't do any optional excursions and we felt the qualityoverall was not as good as on a previous Avalon cruise. But as I said in my review we got what we paid for.

I would sail with them again.

  7. We have done 2 river cruises so far, one with Avalon and one with Riviera.

We are booked on a further cruise with Avalon this July. As far as comparisons between Avalon and Riviera are concerned I would say that you get what you pay for.

We were not overly impressed with the meals on Riviera's Lord Byron (advertised as 5*) although some were excellent compared to our previous experience with Avalon. The tours and overall admin were excellent with both (we joined the ship in Cologne ((the Riviera tour) via Eurostar to Brussels and then coach to Cologne - a boring journey).

It was just little things - soap dispenser rather than individual bottles, poor cheeseboard, running out of items on the buffet. Wine is included on Avalon.

But if cost is a factor then Riviera have a good product and we would probably use them again.

  8. There's a British company called Riviera Travel who do land and river European holidays. They do not include drinks (or tips) in their prices. Water is routinely brought to the table at lunch and dinner and there is the usual machine available to provide hot drinks 24/7. Drinks are charged to your room.

This is a review of a recent trip we did with them. As it's a British company all the travellers were Brits. (This may or may not be a disadvantage!)
