  1. It's hard to dance to music played at a soft volume...we like to hear the beat and feel it too! BB King band on Nieuw Amsterdam was the highlight of the cruise for us!

  2. Thank you everybody!

We are home schooling our granddaughter for this semester only so we can do some extensive travelling. I have been having her read about the various countries and cities we will be visiting and writing a paper about each one. I'm learning a lot too!

Thinking of packing now, planning to bring summer and winter clothes both. As most of the passengers will be non-Americans, and it's been our experience that they dress up at night quite a bit. Planning on taking formal wear as GD is really excited about her fancy new dress! Do you recall how people dressed on the gala nights? What percentage of men wore a tux or dark suit?

I agree with what you said about refusing to pay for the visas required to get into Brazil. If we'd known how COSTLY and what a hassle it was, we would have opted to go out of Buenos Aires. $299.00 per person, plus all these processing fees--over two thousand dollars for the three of us--ridiculous! Oh well, live and learn.

We are very excited about the trip and don't mean to complain though.

Thanks for your input and now could you give me some tips on what to pack?

  3. We are going to Rio next week, to embark on a cruise on the Zandaam. We will be in Rio for a couple of days before the cruise and I have a question. Do we need to bring Brazilian money with us for the taxi from the airport to the hotel, and also for any attractions we might go to such as sugar loaf mountain? Or will USD or credit cards suffice? I don't want to use the ATM at the airport, it seems like an invitation to crime.

  4. My spouse was somewhat reluctant to do a SA cruise. It was on my list, as was some land travel in South and Central America.

We had a wonderful cruise. We were able to land in every port. During cruise I was not certain about DW. But now, this is one of our cruises that she speaks of most frequently. Very different, very enjoyable. We also very much enjoyed our precruise time in Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile.

The cruise prior to ours had significant weather issues and challenges that apparently caused it to by pass a few ports, including Falkland. We had unbelievable weather, cool but blue sky when we wanted it most. I wish this for you.

    Thank you!

  5. We did the SA/Antarctica in 2015 on the Zandaam. There will be the standard 'Port' Talks by the staff which will have some country/city information, I don't remember any real detail information, probably because we had 3 or 4 ex-National Science Foundation staff on-board for the Antarctica portion. Now they provided more educational information that I could absorb. It was the most informed I ever came back from a cruise.

Their leader was the former head of Antarctic Operations for the NSF. He really had some good stories.

So what portion of SA are doing? We started in Valparaiso, rounded the horn, went to Antarctica and ended up in Buenos Aires.

Best cruise of our lives. We are definitely doing it again in the next few years.

We are going to Rio de Janeiro for three days and then getting on the zandaam for a trip around the horn, disembarking in San Antonio Chile. 17 days. And we are super excited!!

  6. I asked my doctor about this, and he said it's due to drinking alcohol. I rarely drink it at home, but when I do, I have noticed swelling ankles. He said his wife gets this every time they go to an all-inclusive resort and she drinks. He gave me the scientific explanation of why this happens (something about dilated blood vessels, which is why some drinking people get a "red face") but I can't quote that exactly.

I elevate my feet at night, drink plenty of water, and don't worry about it too much!

  7. Can OBC be used to be reimbursed for the shore excursions booked online and thereby paid by credit card prior to the cruise? Could it be used for the beverage package if booked prior to sailing, or should we purchase that while on the ship so we could use our OBC for that?

Beginning to wonder what we CAN use OBC for if we have already booked our drink package and shore excursions, as we don't generally buy souvenirs or photos. We also have $100.00 credit to be used at the specialty restaurants. We have $325.00 worth of OBC to use.

  8. Holland America definitely was dressier every night. On royal and carnival I can wear nice jeans and a dressier top and blend right in. On Holland America almost everyone was dressed up every night and I saw lots of tuxes and full suits on formal night.

Which ship were you on and was it in the Caribbean?
