  1. This is truely a toxic forum. I'm questioning my decision now. A simple question, my family was booking for next year on wind, but we wanted to do something exotic in the Asia/Africa region before then on our own since we have never been and it seemed better than the Caribbean and the prices looked fair but I had this question before we bit the bullet.

But go be a detective because I won't be posting anymore.

  2. This thread is becoming very dark for me. At this very moment -- at whatever moment this is being read -- there are hundreds of millions of people in the world who are desperately hungry. The idea that someone would stuff one's face "just for bragging rights" is IMHO nearly obscene. I repeat my earlier suggestion that gotallanswers (a modest handle!) get a table by him/herself. I certainly do not want to witness the self-indulgence.

Ever heard of the yearly Nathan's hot dog challenge? I don't think a silver sea cruise is the appropriate time for me to all of a sudden care about starving people. If people truely cared they would go on a cheaper cruise and donate the difference in dollars to helping solve world hunger.

Lets be clear I think it is horrible that these things happen but I am not in the best position to solve the problem, nor will eating less on a cruise even put the tiniest dent in the problem.

The whole point of this post was simple, to confirm that we should get a two top since this crowd is difference from say a more mainstream cruise crowd like carnival and royal carribesn.

  3. Ok. I think you definitely need to eat at your own table. I would be taken aback at that much food being eaten--and I'm a fairly tolerant person. Are you sure you are not pulling our collective legs?

No I was with my friends at a sushi buffet and we had a contest on who can eat the most sushi. The one on royal Caribbean was another challenge between me and a friend.

Trust me after around piece 50-60 it was all just for bragging rights and not very unenjoyable.

But then again looking at the pictures of the food SS serves one portion will not fill me up.

  4. I hate to ask this--but I am curious. Does it ever occur to you that you might be wasting food---just trying everything? Or, do you really plan to eat it all? What if EVERY passenger ordered as much as you do? Would that make economic sense for the cruise line? Would they have to change their pricing policy? Just food for thought...

I've had 100 pieces of sushi, rice and all, in one sitting before and my record is 9 lobster tails on royal Caribbean on top of the prime rib and apps I had. When I say try I mean eat fully as long as it is good. I'm an active young guy with a fast metabolism.

I eat every 3 hours when I'm not on a cruise ship and my final meal is at midnight and consists of about 2/3-3/4 pounds of meat. What I'm trying to say is I eat a lot on a daily basis and up my cardio on a cruise because I do tend to eat more than normal and just need that afterburn effect to not gain wait.

  5. Thanks for the replies and it is sunny and 68 degrees here too! Based on what everyone has said I think the best course of action is to just sit at a two top or just us at a four top. Except if outside the dinning room others ask if we want to have dinner with them and then if we want to have dinner with them, I will just give them a heads up that I eat for basically 2 people aka ordering numerous dishes to experience the different dishes SS has to offer.

If we are invited to eat with an officer and I really want to try more dishes than one I will have them delivered either before dinner or after dinner to my suite or the Bar.

I was going through past SS menu's and there are times where I just can't make up my mind.

  6. Regarding the question of butlers.

Butlers hours are 06.00-12.00 and 16.00 -22.00. Outside these hours in suite food and beverage requests are fulfilled by duty staff in the galley. Butlers generally have around 14 suites but the number varies depending on the ship's load factor ( whether full or not) and also whether some of the suites are the very large ones - i.e Grand, Owners Suite. Many of them also service more than one deck.

We have always found them to be fantastic, almost without exception, nothing is too much trouble. They are of course all trained at the International Butler Academy.

    Kindest regards

    Master Echo

That's a relief, I would feel guilty ordering room service past 10 if it made the butler get up dressed and the like, just to bring it to me.

Also great review so far, very informative.

  7. FWIW, I'd have a table just for you and your wife when you want to do this. For many people the meal has to have people dressed in a certan way and also many will feel that the meal is a staged occaision and that all on the table have their courses at the same time as there is a sort of theatrical staged element to it - isn't there? So every one has each course at the same time. Asking the MD to decide is moving the responsibility of possible blame.

You asked the question because you thought it might just detract enjoyment for some, and that was a considerate thought and you are right - so let that be your guiding light. Be considerate and take a table a deux. You will both relax and enjoy it more and no "harm" to others has been risked. When you're in the mood on other nights to eat more "traditionally" then join a large table.

    :)

I was just told there are limited two tops in The Restaurant, is it difficult to get a two top if we show up for dinner at 8:30ish?

  8. You are considerate to ask about perceptions of others. As carefreecruise says, different people will have different reactions. I must confess that I would be less than enthusiastic about having a table mate who ordered multiple appetizers, etc., that were served sequentially and that made for a protracted dining experience. Other people might be much more tolerant than me. Of course, a critical consideration would be the quality of the conversation.

Yea that is what I figured, unless I really enjoyed being with someone I wouldn't want to watch them eat double maybe even triple the amount of courses as me. I will tell the MD I have the intentions of ordering numerous plates and they can figure out the best solution such as telling others in advance before sitting us at a table or sitting us at a two top. The last thing I want is to create an awkward situation at the dinner table.

  9. You do not specify which ship you will be traveling on.

On most of the cruise ships (Muse is an exception and the arrangements there are still evolving) you go to the Restaurant whenever you like during opening hours.

If you want to sit alone, the MD will seat you at a two top.

If you prefer to sit with others, tell the MD and he will invited you to join others at a four or six top or he will ask if you want to begin a new table, in which case you might have to wait a few minutes until the MD finds other new arrivals who want to join you.

In nearly all cases, your preferences can be accommodated.

    Looking at spirt or shadow.

Also I like to order lots of different menu options like 2-3 different apps and the like. Would others get annoyed at this and thus we should get a two top? I know the dinning meal is long but wasn't sure how this is perceived.

  10. hi everyone happy almost Halloween.

Can anyone explain how the seating works in the Restaurant. Is it all group seating? Such as if I go with my wife I will sit with others or do we sit by ourselves?

Also, if sitting with others how many people are typically at the table?

    Thanks in advance!

  11. It was certainly downhill after being swiped out for the last time.

Silver Spectre has already referred to the debacle of the Marriott transfer. We were then coralled in a dreary conference room with the fitful sun and heavy rain precluding an external sojourn.

Two vans took eleven of us for a grand tour of Miami airport, because neither driver knew that the British Airways check in area had been moved, some three months earlier.

It then took an hour for a business class check in and then came security which was gratefully without hassle. The time taken through this ordeal was less than the check-in. The Executive Lounge displayed why it was just weeks away from refurbishment.

It took 90 minutes from take off before any food appeared and on completion of a very below par meal, there was just four hours before lights came on for breakfast service, which was declined apart from a smoothie.

The one bright spot after an hour's transit around Heathrow and then immigration and security, is the Executive Lounge in Terminal 5 which serves excellent pastries that bring back memories of those on the Muse.

The cruise itself had a number of disappointments with missed ports and an extremely rude passenger. However Captain Alessandro gave us a grandstand view of the Kennedy Space Centre's rocket launch as we hove to, and fortunately being on the port side the rocket flew virtually overhead as part of its launch trajectory. Grateful thanks for Silver Spectre's super pictures posted previously.

It was really pleasurable to meet old friends and make new ones, both amongst passengers and crew, and we look forward to renewing acquaintances in the future.

    Kindest regards

    Master Echo

Story time on this extremely rude passenger?

  12. The OP has an "enigmatic" and "unusual" range of views in his various posts considering in his first post in December 2009 he said he was just 16 ........ ;)

Yep a lot has changed since I was 16, I have 4 more degrees, a real job, and somehow getting married shortly.

  13. I saw “Bermuda Red” and dark green pants on formal night with dark dinner jackets. I also saw people wearing ivory dinner jackets although it is not in season. Or is it ok when on a cruise? That was never clear to me.

I normally always dress more flamboyant on a cruise. This is just my first SS cruise

  14. I'm starting to get that trolling feeling.

Wear a hat in a restaurant? Seriously?

On other threads this OP wants to drink all night, and have charred octopus brought to him at the bar by his butler - charred octopus, is that even a thing?

And have a look back to 2011 when he started a tipping thread on the Carnival board, clearly as a troll.

If you were a good creeper you would see that I was 17 at the time. But I should go delete some of those posts they reveal to much information about myself.

And yes charred Octopus is a thing.

On my last cruise a few months ago I was able to wear my fedora also, it was just a question.

  15. TTS

He wore mismatched shoes all the time. His clothing choices were dali inspired I think, obviously couture and $$$$.

His wife was not as sartorially inclined though.

That just seems annoying walking around in different shoes!

Also haha at the nurse comment

I also have my RL checkered multi-colored stand out jacket I am bringing for informal nights

  16. No fedoras while dining...if that's what you meant by fandora.

If however you are speaking of a large ostrich fan, you surely can use it.

I have been on a cruise with a guy who wore versace trousers and a dinner jacket, and mismatched shoes. He was not banned.

Yes that is what I mean Fedora. It is just a plain navy hugo boss one. I am pretty sure me and my then wife will be a talking point regardless haha.

  17. Yea I think whatever I wear can be chaulked up to being a millennial haha. but good to hear I don't need to wear suit pants and others approve.

Also while we are on the topic can I wear my fandora while eating or do I need to take it off in the restaurant?
