  1. When we were aboard previous cruises there were usually a few printed copies of a variety of newspapers for guests to read. Now it seems that has been discontinued with an offer to have paid papers delivered to the room. When did this change occur and can we raise a community plea to reinstate it?

  2. I have been 3 times. It will be one of the most memorable experiences you can have. The scale and beauty of nature there is unrivaled. A few things to keep in mind. There is an international convention that no ship with more than 500 passengers can disembark and no more than 100 can be ashore at a time. What that means for you is that if shore time is important to you (and it should be) the larger ships will just cruise by. For the 100 to 500 passenger ship time ashore will be rotated. Practically under 200 passengers you will have as much shore time as you want.

In the antarctic summer it will be light just about all the time you are awake and then some. Temperatures will be around freezing. Dress in layers.

Do go and enjoy yourself and be a part of that small minority of humanity that has seen this wonder up close.

  3. Just to clarify... does this mean Seaborn offers one landing a day, while other, less-luxe lines with smaller expedition ships offer two?

We've cruised Seabourn only once so far, loved it, and were very intrigued by the Antarctica trip, and my biggest question was whether we would be sacrificing seeing and experiencing what we're there to see for the pampering I know Seabourn would deliver.

There is an international convention that stipulates that no ship with more than 500 passengers may disembark AND that no more than 100 at a time may be ashore. Logistically that makes it more difficult to get 2 stops daily on a ship with 450 versus a ship with 100-200. I have been there three times, twice on a 49 passenger ship (now retired) and once on Silversea (about 150 pax). The level of luxe is proportionately greater on the luxury lines but I would trade that for more penguin bonding time.

  4. I've always said that while I'm anti-smoking that the smoking in Seabourn public spaces does not bother me.

The smoke in the Observation Bar on Quest right now is intolerable. The staff are keeping the doors closed. Push them open and the stench hits you immediately. My eyes are watering despite not spotting anyone with a currently-lit cancer stick.

This is God-awful and needs to be banned.

We smelled it last night on the 6th level along with other passengers and met people coming from the 10th level who were driven out of the space by the smoke. Agree something needs to change.

  5. We were on the November 29th, 2014 Antarctica cruise. I did not see any children, however I would not hesitate to say bring them!!! They would have a wonderful time, lucky kids!!! We have sailed 70+ days on seabourn in the last 3 years and children have never contributed to a negative experience!!

We were on a Silversea Antarctic in December and there were a few sets of older children and teens. There were no problems. I only hope they appreciate the value and rarity of the experience they had.

  6. We have been on Millie 5 times prior to its refit and twice after. Overall we enjoy the ship and its crew quite a bit. One issue I had with the refit was that it interfered with the previously good flow of the ship. On one of the public levels there were two revenue generating venues that had few people in them. On prior cruises that space was frequently a social hub. Now it is just a place to pass through on the way somewhere else. The Aqua restaurant was shoehorned into the upper level of the restaurant interfering with the flow through the restaurant. The level of service in the main restaurant was a bit slower than usual. Hopefully this is a one off and will be fixed by our next visit.

  7. Based on the photo that ariawomen posted above, I noticed that some of the bags were labeled Field & Selects and some were labeled First Tea and some had both names on them. I then found this site: http://www.original-firsttea.nl/?pid=28&page=Home

Some time ago, possibly a year or more, after returning from a cruise I tried looking up Field & Selects and recall finding a site indicating it was a commercial food service brand but I could not find that now. Just looking at the photo above and the first site I found its hard to really figure out what this company is about but it's obviously not being targeted as a consumer brand in the USA or UK right now so it looks like it's either just a commercial food service brand or a brand they're starting to transition from a food service brand to a consumer brand.

Looks like it is a newly registered Singapore company:

  8. No statewide domestic partnerships. No statewide anti-discrimination law. Same-sex adoption was only legalized because of a court order. "Sodomy" was only legalized because of SCOTUS.

Not every place in the state is The Magic Kingdom.

The misguided voters passed a constitutional amendment against marriage which now has been ruled unconstitutional by 4 separate judges, however all rulings are stayed pending an appeal by the attorney general who wants it to go to the US Supreme Court. It is coming, but it is not here yet.

  9. It would be nice to know if they carry drugs to help limit a stroke....(non-invasive treatment).

Unless they have a CT scanner on board to make sure it is not one of the 15% of strokes that are hemorrhagic which would make TPA or an equivalent lethal I do not think so.

  10. Two years ago we were on a RT South Pacific when a passenger became ill and we ended up stopping off of Christmas Island ( not on our itinerary) for over 24 hours waiting for a rescue plane that turned up 8 hours late. We had to miss one of our islands that was supposed to be a fantastic diving and snorkeling stop.
