Looking for CC recommendations;

How far is the port from the airport?

Most of the Hotels say 11 to 13 miles from airport?

 

We just need somewhere to sleep not looking for a $300.00 room.

3 star hotel will work for one night.

 

Is there local transportation CC members use when cruising out of the San Fran port.

Any advise will be appreciated.

We stayed at the Best Western El Rancho. They will pick you up at the airport and take you to the hotel. You can then book Super Shuttle that will pick you up at the airport the next day and take you to the ship. Best Western will take you back to the airport (free of charge). It's a clean hotel and close to the airport. Super Shuttle might make a couple of pick ups and drop off, but it's no big deal. The taxi is very expensive!!!

We use a service called 24/7. They are fast and reliable. We'll never use Princess shuttle ever again!

It depends on which port you want to leave from. The Star Princess leaves out of San Francisco and is a 10-day cruise. This is the one we cruise on because we can drive to the port. I believe she's in good shape, clean, and find no fault with the food. We always book a Caribe cabin due to the balconies being larger than others. I can't tell you about activities for children. There will be a naturalist on board who will point out wildlife (whales, dolphins, etc), during the cruise.

Also, San Francisco has many things to see and do for children: The zoo, museum, Alcatraz, Angel Island, Fisherman's Wharf, just to name a few.

Good luck in whatever you choose. Princess is more laid back and you will find more senior citizens than children.

OMG....go to YOU TUBE and punch in "Pier Runners" you will see so many of them on video. Cozumel is FAMOUS for pier runners and people missing the ship. I guess it is the tequila.:eek:

Some of those utubes are hilarious to watch. The funniest part are the people on board heckling! :D

We take a baggy full of D'Vita Cappucino (powdered). You can get it in a big can from Costco. You can put it in your coffee of just add water - it is yummy! Nothing better than sitting on our balcony and sipping coffee mixed with some D'Vita. :p

Another OFFICIAL CRUISE CRITIC CARNIVAL PLATINUM CRUISERS

DH and I were considering a cruise out of San Francisco as well. However, the parking is pretty steep - $15/day. Whenever we fly out of San Francisco for a vacation or cruise we stay at a hotel that gives us free parking for 14 days and $7 for each additional day. Then take a taxi to the ship. There's a free shuttle to the airport. Might be worth looking into.

I began reading your review and not paying attention to time, it took me 2 hours just to get through page 3. Wonderful pictures and review - I'll finish your review tomorrow.

I'm overwhelmed at the moment. We are going on the Island Princess Panama Canal sailing November 12. We are flying in the day before. What hotel is closest to the pier and with a shuttle. What about the Comfort Inn, is that close to the pier - a friend recommended it? Thanks for your help.

I'm booking tomorrow for the Panama Canal 11/12/12 Island Princess. Thanks for all the info as I told the Princess booking agent that we would get our own flights and insurance. He was kind of pushy and doing the scare tactic on me. We've been on several Carnival cruises and the booking your own air flights and insurance doesn't change. We'll be flying in a day before - maybe even 2 days before.

Never won a nickel and lost plenty. It's a loser thing for me. So, I no longer play when we cruise.

Heck she paid for the cruise they better just take her on the cruise! The cost would be astrinomical to get her home from a port. After all the passengers got off they should have a car pick her up and deal with it from there. :( that would suck.

In the MDR, they use to sing Happy Anniversary to you." :rolleyes: BFD! I think one year they gave us a cake but I doubt they still do this. Nothing special unless you request and pay for it.

I had a filet and a lobster tail in the main dining room on the Spirit for NO extra fee! We had a res at the steakhouse but we ended up canceling it cause I saw no reason to pay for what I could get for free.

I had surf and turf in the steakhouse on the Splendor. I've been on many Carnival cruises and I can tell you, that I have never had anything in the MDR like I did in the steakhouse. There's no comparison of the two. I think the lobster (small tails) were rubbery in the MDR. The ones I saw in the steakhouse were the biggest lobster tails I have ever seen in my life. The filet was so tender we didn't need a knife.

For the vegetarian issue, tell the Steakhouse ahead of time that your wife is a vegetarian, and they'll accommodate her.

I haven't seen this question or answer yet....how would you get the cork back into the bottle? I've never been able to get a cork all the way back into a bottle after opening it :confused: Of note, we were advised by the sommelier at our wine store that many of even the top end wines are going to screw off tops due to a cork shortage.

Reverse the cork the way you took it out. The bottom becomes the top and the bottom is tapered enough to get it back into the bottle. You can tell I've done this before. :D

Just buy the cheapie wine with the screw-on top and replace that. :p

Never buy cheap wine just to pour it out! Buy good wine, drink it and enjoy it then reuse the bottle to smuggle. If you carefully slice the band going around the top of the bottle, you can carefully reglue it to the bottle after refilling it. If security saw cheap wine in your bag, he/she might get suspicious.
