  1. I would like to add my thanks to you for your wonderful blog which I have followed from the start. Wonderful photos and also SO useful as we are embarking at Yokohama on Saturday. Glad to hear that we should have better weather than you did.

A few years back we did a week on a smallish ship in the Western Med in the throws of a nearby cyclone. At the first port after embarkation at Rome 34 passengers got off never to be seen again! We are made of sterner stuff but I would still prefer calm seas and sunshine.

It will be hard for you to return to life on land after such a fantastic experience. Envy you the whales.

  2. Next Octobery friend and I will be disembarking a cruise ship in Shanghai by 9 am one morning and our flight home is not until 11pm. We do not fancy the ship's disembarkation tour packages as they are to places we have already seen on previous trips followed by time in a hotel. Has anyone used a local company which will pick up from the port and do a good day trip (with our luggage in the boot) and drop us off at the airport early evening? If so, I would really appreciate the contact details.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  3. In the UK it is definitely better to book with a TA than direct especially if you need flights and a minimum one night pre cruise hotel stay. I have just booked a 2018 cruise with business class flights, basic out side cabin, two nights in Tokyo hotel and overseas transfers and it was £2.600 less with the TA than it was with Celebrity including the free drink package offer which Celebrity had on at the time. I find all the major British TAs offer similar deals but each can vary by up to £200 so I do try 2 or 3. You are ATOL covered so the booking is totally secure. I usually check the Celebrity price first and work from there. Also, if you are British and book a future cruise on-board you do not have the same rights as US passengers in terms of money back if you don't take up the cruise - you can still change to another cruise within the company. I checked out the cruise I have just booked while I was on Constellation in the Summer and it would have been far far dearer than using a TA once I got home. This may not be the case for other nationalities but Britons beware!

  4. Thanks LHT28 I shall look at them now. I know it is a huge distance but I dimly recall seeing a repositioning cruise that did this but foolishly I did not save the advert. Maybe I dreamt it! Never mind it will just have to be two cruises - not a hard thing.:)

  5. Thank you so much to everyone who took the trouble to reply. I am sorted. My most pressing difficulty of what to do with the luggage was resolved by you so easily and I had googled for ages without coming up with the answer. Cruise Critic people are brilliant at answering everything you ever need to know about travel.

  6. Hi everyone,

I am going on a cruise in June which terminates in Venice and have a late flight home (9pm) I would like to spend the time seeing something of Venice but it seems that the cruise line does not do a disembarkation tour plus airport transfer. Does anyone have any knowledge about other tours - I can't see a Viator one. There will also be the problem of luggage to deal with. Grateful for any ideas.

  7. We were on the Emerald recently and were advised to go for deck 10 the Caribe deck as it has far larger balconies than the other decks. You get a bit undercover which gives privacy and also means you can sit out if it is warm but drizzly, plus part out side which does not have privacy. Altogether it makes a really nice big balcony. The other balconies only have the outside bit so far as we could see and were informed. (I am not talking about suites - just straight balcony cabins.) We were just forward of mid ship and it was very quiet both in the corridor and above as it is just cabins above. If your cruise hugs the coast you need to look at which way you are cruising. For our trip around New Zealand, Port gave us wonderful views as we cruised, arrived and departed and most mornings we pulled back the curtains to stunning views. We also got the sun most afternoons when we returned from trips.

    Enjoy your cruise.

  8. It is ages since I have cruised with Princess but will shortly be embarking from Sydney on Emerald Princess. Very excited and sorting clothes. Can anyone tell me whether or not bath robes are provided please? I have tried searching the threads but can't find an answer.

  9. We had learned from other blogs that there is a small beach about 20 minutes walk away. You can see it from the Amber Cove development complex beyond the toilet block. To get there you have to walk right out of the Amber Cove fenced complex, turn left along the main road and then take the first left. you run the gauntlet of taxi drivers on the road wanting to take you elsewhere. If you ignore them and carry on walking, the sandy beach is small but we thought very pleasant with a small bar and shop, although the water is cloudy. There are not many loungers but there are trees for shade. We had a lovely day there within touching distance it seemed of the ship! We took a cab back to Amber cove complex which cost $8 which was a silly amount to save a shortish walk but we thought it worth it as we did not want to get hot and sticky again. Some people on our ship loved the Amber Cove pool complex but most thought it a shame to be in the Caribbean and end up round a pool instead of on a beach.

  10. Do P and O let you take drinks on board to use during the cruise or do they confiscate them until the end of the voyage? I have been on a lot of cruises and have found different policies on different lines but have never cruised P and O before. We are not great drinkers but it is good to know in advance.

  11. Do P and O let passengers take drinks purchased on shore back onto the ship to use or do they confiscate them until the end of the voyage? I have met both policies on different ships but have never cruised P and O before. Thanks for any information - we are not mad drinkers but it is helpful to know these things.
