  1. We are doing a cruise that leaves from Lisbon in early September. There will be 4 of us (one who uses a mobility scooter) and none of us have been to Lisbon before. Can anyone recommend a moderate priced hotel in a good neighborhood? There is one couple and two singles so we will be wanting 3 rooms and hoping to stay under $200 per night...if this is possible! Appreciate any suggestions.

River cruises are not particularly disabled friendly for a variety of reasons. However, there is one company in Holland which has a fully accessible, adapted boat. I can’t remember the name, but I’m sure you will find it if you Google.

Thank you. I think I did find a company that seems to specialize in tours (including one river boat) that is based in Holland but the ship, MS Viola is owned by a German company. I'll follow up on this. Thanks!

  3. I am looking into a group of 8 of us possibly doing a European River cruise. One of our friends uses a fold up mobility scooter when he travels. He can walk short distances but not too far. Most of the lines I am familiar with don't seem to have accessible cabins, or I'm not looking at the right cruise line! Does anyone have any experience with this or possible suggestions?

  4. Not sure if I'll be doing the side trip to Dunoon or not. My brother who had been stationed there passed away suddenly on Monday. I was going mostly for him, but I like smaller villages too and may still go one more time in his honor and see that beautiful area again.  Still trying to process it all! Again, I appreciate all of the information you all have provided.

Will be on a cruise in May with a stop in Greenock (to go to Glasgow). I was in Glasgow years ago and while it was nice, I see on the map that Greenock is also close to Dunoon and that is where my brother was stationed a looonng time ago when the Holy Loch was still open. I really like smaller towns and villages so I would rather go to Dunoon and have a look around to see if anything looks at all familiar (and take some pictures for my brother). It looks like there is a public ferry but if anyone knows for sure, I would like to know. And anything in particular I shouldn't to miss? I was there once also, but that was in 1968!!!

I have been away, but if it isn't too late, you might find it both helpful and interesting to read Toms port guide to Greenock:

Pages 1-4 are relevant to you with mention of the US base SUBRON 14 and a link to WIKI Holy Loch.

Wow, thanks so much for that info. I've just quickly gone over it but interesting and I think that will be very helpful. I'm also going to pass it along to my brother. In the Wiki reference, I saw the name of the ship he was on which was the Simon Lake. His "job" while there was to shuttle the guys from the ship to the shore in Dunoon and he loved it as well as the area!

Greenock cruise terminal to Gourock ferry is about 2,5 miles, you can get between the two  by train from Greenock , or McGill buses, or probably easier for you to take a taxi,

Thanks for the info and yes, I think a taxi would be easiest! From the looks of the schedule of the ferries and the proximity of the ship to the ferry, this "plan" is certainly doable in a day, right? Thanks again for your reply.

  8. I have friends who are not on these boards that are going to do a round trip from New Orleans on the American Duchess. They will be spending one day and night prior at the Intercontinental Hotel. They were told they could leave their car there, but the cost is $45 per day!! They are looking for some safe, secured parking for less than that. Anyone have any ideas?

  9. Just a quick update. I called Crown and Anchor and asked the young lady. She said that I could "try"! I asked if there was any way to find out and she told me she didn't have that kind of information but that I could "try" to cash them. It isn't that big of a deal to me as it was kind of "found money" for me. So I'll take them and "try" to cash them on board. If they don't take them, I'll just cash them at my bank when I get home and put them into my "cruise account"!

  10. Thank you all for your responses. I guess I will call Crown and Anchor and ask the question. I know they are not widely accepted anymore. It's just some I "found" tucked away from a few years ago....nice surprise for me! But I definitely want to be able to cash them in somewhere. If I find I can't do it on the ship, I'll cash them in and get a pre-paid Visa card I guess. It's too bad because the traveler's checks always seemed the "safest" way to carry money....but I guess anything can be forged or hacked these days. :(

  11. Did it last year, and it was one of the best days on the cruise. Five women, we walked to the ferry dock from the shuttle from the ship, but we took a taxi back to get the shuttle to the ship. The ferry trip was beautiful, you will see such beautiful views!

Linda, I reread your post and now have a question. How far does the shuttle from the ship take you. I guess I mean, how far of a walk is it from where the shuttle drops you off to the ferry dock?

  12. Again, thank you all for the replies! I think this is what we will do. It looks like the ferry is only 8 Euros each way as opposed to the cruise tour that is $66 per person and considering the travel time on the ferry it only leaves 2 hours in Amalfi. This way we can make our own schedule. :)
