My first cruise was on a March break trip on the MS Boheme in 1980. I remember St. Patrick's Day onboard. Billy was our waiter and he wouldn't bring me dessert unless I ate my vegetables. Of course, I left my veggies just to get him to cajole me. (I love veggies.) I had just taken a German language course in school, so spoke with the captain and he taught me to play backgammon. He also spent some time swimming with me on a shore excursion.
The itinerary was supposed to be Miami to Puerto Plata, St. Thomas, San Juan, and Cap Haitien; but Haiti had some political unrest so we redirected to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.
I will forever be comparing every trip to that first one.
Thank you for this thread. It has brought back some really great memories.
Added: The captain told me MS Boheme operated as an overnight car ferry between Maine and Nova Scotia during the summer. I haven't found any confirmation of this.
