  1. We did the QE2 this spring and took the train to Oxford. It is super easy, we were cleared by customs on the transit over and requested a walk off card for disembarkation.

We were off the ship at 7:15 am and hopped a cab at the terminal and dropped of at the station, bought our tickets and on the train heading to Oxford by 7:50am.

Very relaxed and one of the easiest disembarkation's we have ever had, we walked from the station in Oxford to our hotel.

Only regret was we did not stay longer in Oxford consider the train.

  2. Just finished our first Cunard QE2 sailing, a crossing from Brooklyn to Southampton.

We are Elite Plus X cruisers and found your comparison accurate and fair but as some have commented it is difficult to compare the two lines.

We enjoyed and attended the afternoon tea each day but by day four we were sharing one scone between the two of us but we still insisted  on our own quenelle of clotted cream. We enjoyed listening to the band and a having a few dances.

We were in agreement that they should enforce some level of dress code. It is disappointing when some take the time to change into a dress and men put on a jacket and others show up in flipflops, shorts and tee shirts and women in spandex gym attire.

The pub lunch was very nice and I enjoyed the battered Cod and chips, tikka masala with apint was nice as well.

The shows were smaller and more low keyed then on X but we enjoyed them and liked the theater which easily accommodated the attendees. It felt intimate and suited the venue.

Watching movies in the Planetarium was a nice plus, and the beautiful library was also a very nice bonus as we seldom bother with wifi while at sea.

The gym facilities were small but never very busy so a fair trade.

We original booked a inside cabin but were offered a very reasonable upgrade price to a balcony. I joked with my wife that I would pack bolt cutters in case the ship went down and we were locked in steerage.

We often travel Aqua class on X but were using the QE2 as a simple transfer to get to the UK to spend 5 weeks traveling England and Scotland. We never felt second class or denied of anything on the ship and found staff and crew friendly and open to conversation.

It was a rather sedate crossing but we expected that on a seven day sea voyage.

We spent 4 days in Brooklyn before embarkation and yes the boarding was very slow, however the plus was the disembarkation in Southampton.

Our plan was to disembark and catch a train to Oxford to tour the town, stay the night there then start our travels. I hesitated to purchase tickets in advance as I could not get clarity on what time we would disembark and how long it would take. I did learn Cunard offered a pass that allowed early walk off with ones luggage.

It was a very pleasant surprise to learn once on the ship that we were cleared by customs during the crossing and that with a special disembarkation card in hand they allowed us to walk off the ship at 7:10am. They reclaim the card at the gangway.

I am pleased to say we were on the train and pulling out of the Southampton station by 7:40am, one of our easiest disembarkation's in over fifty cruises.

We enjoyed our cruise and thought it great value, and we would do the crossing again. We plan on traveling Ireland for a few weeks next year and may use QE2 to return home, why fly when one can cruise.

Our longest cruise has been 32 days we are uncertain if we would undertake a sailing of that length on Cunard but one never knows.

We have learned over the years that travel is what you make of it and we felt we made the most of our QE2 sailing and thoroughly enjoyed our time.

Do you know the history of those cabins on Norway? NCL added that pool, dropping it into what had been a courtyard. Even though those cabins were small, the sheltered courtyard made them highly desirable on  transatlantics when she was the France.

Thank you, that is interesting information it explains that oddity for me. I have pondered that for a long time.

Trains from Oxford usually go to Paddington or Marylebone.

Seems that if booking on LOCO2 we can get a train to Victoria Cross but Paddington does seem to be the standard station, it is a 6 minute cab ride from there to our lodgings.

Yes I think I will pack the extra sweater I can wear it about the ship and to meals.

The anticipation is rising for this cruise, we have done trans Atlantic's even did the Oasis to and from Europe a few years ago. Two years ago we flew over and spent 2 weeks in London and a week on a narrow boat in Leicester, Loughborough district. Then flew to Copenhagen for a few days before boarding Vision of the Sea's. We did Norway, Shetlands, 4 days Iceland, St. John NFLD ending in NY City.

We have become a little jaded with cruising the past few years it is difficult to find routes we have not already done even in Asia.

We tend to mainly cruise Celebrity and Royal a few Princess, Oceania, Azamara and others even MSC. My wife does not believe it is worth the effort of packing for less then a two week cruise.

So we are pleasantly surprised at how excited we are to be cruising Queen Mary 2, all are friends want feed back on the ship, they want to know if the dress code is really enforced like it used to be years ago on Celebrity.

    .

This cruise is all about the ship and the culture of the cruise line for us.

Not deterred by the food comments, years ago we did our first trans Atlantic on a small British ship named the Sea Bird from Barbados  to Southampton, I still remember the brown gravy that came with every meal.

The Americans on board could not understand the comedians or their humor. One of our favourite cruises the crossing was so rough that when we walked up the hill from the dock in Tenerife we could not stay on the sidewalk as we were swaying so much.

Our first cruise was on the SS Norway the converted SS France we had an inside with a window that looked across a service corridor through a port hole window into the pool. We would have parties in the cabin and everyone would laugh watching the swimmers adjust their swimwear under the water. We had to be tendered into every Caribbean island as she drew so much water.

    Cheers

  5.  We are cruising QM2 with 2 other couples end of may, it will be our first time on Cunard and we are looking forward to the formal nights. We will be touring England and Scotland for a month after disembarking and flying back to Canada from Glasgow at trips end.

We are seasoned travelers, both as cruisers and land tourists. We are just purchasing our train tickets this evening as the fares have finally dropped.

Our plan is to disembark in Southampton and training to Oxford spending the afternoon touring the sites and then the following day training in the afternoon to London, Victoria Station. We will stay there for a week in an AirBnB in Kensington and then travel by train to Edinburgh. After 4 days there we will rent a car and tour the Highlands and the Islands, ending our trip in Glasgow and flying back to Canada

So to the chase, we travel light and I plan on undertaking the trip with only a carry on.

I have already done a pre-pack and was able  to pack.

1 - Tux shirt, bow tie, Tux jacket - I pulled it from our clothing donation bag, I have a new tux but will take the old one and leave it on the ship. I am taking black dress golf plants to wear with the tux jacket. The wife says they are passable as a match for colour and texture. I will wear the slacks during the trip as they are wrinkle proof, durable and comfortable.

2 - Black Clarke leather shoes with rubber soles,  not patent  leather but have a shine and are passable with the tux and are comfortable walking shoes.

3 - Casual blue suit, can be worn complete or just as a jacket ( I plan on wearing it on our flight to NY ) and the pants can be worn on their own as semi-casual.

4 - White dress shirt and 2 ties.

5 - Grey dress golf pants.

6 - Blue casual dockers style cotton pants.

7 - Tilley rain pants, we are hiking about Scotland for 3 weeks. The pants are light, casual, plus wind proof and are not identifiable as rain wear.

8 - Four long sleeved casual wrinkle free shirts.

9 - Black turtle neck sweater, it can be worn by itself or under a shirt to layer if chilly.

10 - Merino wool tee shirt, can be worn  by itself or used as a layer.

    11- Set of pajamas.

    12 - 4 pairs of underwear., 2 undershirts.

    13 - 4 pairs of socks.

14 - Bathing suit. We understand the ship has a heated and covered pool area similar to the Celebrity ships.

15 - Tee shirt, light work out shorts and sport underwear - for the gym while on board. I can hand wash these and they are dry in the morning.

16 - Foam flip flops for pool, gym shower and about the cabin.

17 - Light shoulder sling bag to carry water bottles, books, snacks / sandwich, whatever while out and about.

It is our understanding they have washing facilities on the QM2.

Traveling by plane to NY I will wear a semi casual rain proof jacket, hat, black denim pants, long sleeve casual shirt, casual suit jacket, water proof gortex running shoes ( I will use them in the gym and on the moors.) and of course a fifth pair of socks and underwear.

I will carry a computer bag with 11" Macbook air, my phone is my camera. The bag holds my shaving gear, tooth brush, deodorant, meds and other sundries. We also pick up what we need as we go at the £ stores while in Britain.

We are spending 3 day in Brooklyn pre cruise. Been to NY city  a few times but doing Coney Island this time having a Nathans hotdog and they have a Brighton Beach as well!

For those wondering how can it all fit, I am 5"8", 150 pounds, 32 inch waist with a 9.5 shoe size. The above listed clothes easily fit in a 20" carry on that weighed 5.6 lb when empty. Packed weight was 17.8 lb.

Feel free to mention anything I may have missed packing, Thinking of packing a light cardigan sweater.

I am trying to get the wife to do a carry on as well and that will be a real challenge with the formal nights as she wants to pack 3 different dresses. She is a petite 5' and likes silk so may be possible.

    Cheers

  6. We met a couple at our dinning table a few years ago and have done a river cruise, 6 cruises and added land vacations to the mix.

They are very mobile and retired young like us and it is an asset when you have 2 couples to work on the logistics of a long trip.

We have what we call Tribal councils over the phone as they live in California and we in Toronto. We hash out interests and bucket list items and then break out different items for each on the team to research and update the group on at the next Tribal meeting.

From these meeting we have pieced together our itinerary for numerous amazing trips.

We have done two three month trips with them and a few shorter ones but we often break off during our trips and go our own way and then meet up at various points on the trip.

It helps cost wise when sharing VRBO accommodations and on transportation like transfers or car rentals and tour guides. Each couple brings a different perspective when researching.

We have shared accommodation in Thailand, Rome, Key West, Hawaii and even a barge in the heart of Amsterdam which would have been cost prohibitive for us as a single couple.

We are planning a trip to England next summer which will entail a narrow boat for a week on the canals, life is good.

  7. Thanks...I knew I could order wine, guess I just never got down far enough to see the liquor section.

Baldercash.... did you invent the internet too?

I have read these boards off an on for several years, never understand why some folks like to answer questions then "poke" at OP for asking the question.

If you don't want to answer "stupid" questions..... just don't !

    ... just sayin

I did not know the answer myself so I googled "Bon Voyage Princess liquor" and the web site popped right up.

I posted the link for the poster but it is such an obvious search that it was easier to search then creating a post on CC.

If they had searched and not been able to find it I can understand but posting without looking?

I posted the link and the "polite" poster told the poster to go to the Princess site and find Cellars which is the link I posted, so which was more helpful?

They told you to search it yourself and here are the steps, I gave you the direct link.

I stated it looks like you cannot buy Baileys.

For this I get jumped on by a bunch of members who are more concerned about addressing a perceived slight then answering the question can you buy Baileys on the ship?

Can any of you PC CC members answer the question which is can you buy Baileys if not you are not really helping the poster or contributing to this thread.

    Cheers

  8. That's ridiculous. They aren't moving there--- they would have to drive BACK, too.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

The gas would cost about $350.00 for that distance round trip, I just did Myrtle Beach for a week of golf with 3 other guys in a vehicle from Toronto.

Add 4 nights accommodation at $75.00 a night on the road plus meals so no real savings and you would need a vacation when you get back to rest from all that driving.

Just watch for flight deals they will come.

  9. Where are you leaving from? I usually cross to Niagara Falls NY to fly to FLL or Miami for $200-$350 round trip a few times a year. Hundreds less than flying out of Canada.

We do the same we are on this years Mardi Gras cruise and are flying back March 3rd that is Bike week in Daytona plus March Break for lots of Canadians.

We will drive to Buffalo stay in a Park Sleep & Fly Hotel the night before for $75.00USD which gives us free 21 days of parking.

We are able to fly down on SW and back on JB for $380.00USD for the two of us.

Our friends joining us are paying $750.00CDN each from Toronto we saved enough on the flight to justify going down a week early, renting a car for the 7 days and a VRBO cottage in Las Olas for the price of their flights.

    To each their own.

  10. A 15 day land vacation would cost much more than the 15 day cruise. We priced this out several years ago. The airfare alone was more than the cruise. Hotels were also expensive. Hawaii is a very pricey place to visit. Someday maybe a land vacation but we really enjoyed the cruise.

We flew 2016 Jan 1st from Vancouver to Oahu for $210.00CDN on American and returned Jan 31st to Toronto on Air Canada for $320.00CDN we stayed in a 2 bedroom bungalow in the gated community of Hawaii Kai with a back deck on the water $2,000USD for the month through VRBO and a 2016 Malibu Hybrid rental car for $950.00USD for the month.

Don't think Hotel think home rental, yes the food is pricey in Hawaii but when you can cook and BBQ at leisure gazing over the water at Koko Head it doesn't get much better.

We did something similar in 2012 flying to Oahu staying in a rental for 10 days before boarding our ship for a Trans-Pacific cruise.

But if you don't want to fly then yes the only option is a cruise but don't base it on price.

BritinSoCal - thanks for the "Chorleywood Process" reference, sounds similar to American Wonder Bread which invented a way to get rid of holes in bread in 1941 with a new process and that stuff does not go stale either.

I will use it instead of "sliced bread" references.

We will be traveling the UK for a month next summer and will definitely look for the difference or lack there of, the wife loves shopping Tasco and browsing John Lewis.

    Cheers

  11. Honestly' date=' it depends...my adult daughter has a mobility issue. That means I intentionally travel light as I'll need to assist with her luggage as well depending on the care we receive from the airport personnel, transportation driver, porters, etc. Since we need a suitcase for her medical stuff, I TRY to get it down to 2 carry ons, 1 suitcase, and her rollator or wheelchair.

The Princess people are great in assisting with luggage...and the concept that we will be dropped as close as reasonably possible is great. Often the private transportation is required to drop us across a street or parking lot. While that wasn't a big deal before her illness, it is now.[/quote']

I agree as I said in a case like yours traveling with a mobility issue it is value added and eases the whole travel experience. We all have a personal comfort level and it is not worth pushing past it to save a few dollars or a few hours of time.

When I worked we would fly in the same day and try to get out on the earliest flight home but the cost was a lot of stress and worry for my wife which negated the point of the holiday. For me it was not about the cost I just had no time.

So we started flying in the night before and red eye flights home just to lighten her worries, she did not care if the ship would wait she would worry about missing a flight at that moment or would the cab make it to the airport in time.

We did an Azamara cruise that included air, transfers and such and we were delayed porting in Athens due to high seas. I realized we would miss the flight home but even on the bus staff assured the pax that it would be dealt with.

As be disembarked the bus I told my wife to get back from the crowd as soon as we got off. When the staff announced outside the airport the flight had been missed all hell broke loose even though Azamara were taking care of hotel accommodations, flight, arrangements and meals.

I asked a rep how to catch the bus downtown and we fled the scene, seven hours later when we returned back to check into the hotel people where still arguing.

It can be like insurance, a waste until you need it.

  12. Sorry to learn of your anguish. I do not doubt your experience, so sorry that occurred. All I can attest to is that we only use three lines, Princess (going on 300 days of sailing with Princess), Regent and HAL and we have always used their transfers. Guess we have been very fortunate over our 26 years on the high seas, since we never experienced a transfer problem. But we certainly have witnessed others who were in high states of anxiety at the airport, ultimately cruising on the same ship we were about to, who did not have cruise line transfers but were engaged in terrible stressful baggage and other unintended developments. Every time, our agent, though not required, took the time to bend over backward to help them out of their unintended dilemma.

We have found that seldom is a direct airport to ship transfer quicker, easier and cheaper then doing it ourselves. A cruise transfer may seem to be easier as in no planning required but not cheaper or quicker or it may be easier possibly cheaper but is likely not quicker. If it is cheaper it is likely not the easiest or quickest, how much tougher is it to take a bus, train, limo or taxi?

I find paying a premium to wait around and to then be herded and held a problem but others obviously don't as there is a feeling of safety in numbers.

We don't do ships tours for the same reason but we have used ship transfers at the end of a cruise when bundled with a tour to get to the airport for a late flight. Say from Valparaiso to Santiago Chile a 2 hour or so drive that can be turned into a 8 hour tour with a lunch stop and a shorter wait at the airport.

We tend to fly in at least a day early or even more if to an interesting city, and how challenging is it to catch a cab to a hotel from an airport? The same applies if we disembark at an interesting port we are in no rush to the airport we will plan a few days stay.

We travel light often with just carry on and and on trips of up to three months we have managed with a 22 inch bag each but I can appreciate the need and the convenience for those with mobility issues or who travel luggage heavy.

We have witnessed many couples struggle with more luggage then can be fitted in a standard cab in some countries.

We manage our travel dollars and prefer to spend them on extending our travels I just fail to see standard ships transfers as good value.

I agree with you there are a lot in transit who stress out, I just plan to avoid this ..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETQKh3JbEus and if I cannot I adjust my sails.

    Cheers

  13. My Bank Mastercard gives an automatic 21 days out of country medical coverage and I bumped it to 35 days on my last trip for $30.00 more with a million dollars with evacuation and coverage of minor pre existing conditions like high blood pressure.

The card covers emergency cancellation trip interruption and such if you use it to book the flight, accommodation and cruise even lost luggage.

I got the complete documentation sent to me via email and could find no difference between my past stand alone policies I have bought in the past.

This is a Canadian card but I would imagine US cards to have the same inclusions?

As an aside the card also supplies 4 free VIP airport lounge passes yearly.

  14. I guess the cost cutting can now end as he boasts all the cruise lines are a huge success.

He does state they will deal with more redundancies so I guess more people / staff to cut.

" For us now, it's continuing the journey and advancing new technology that can eliminate some redundancies, and tightening some of the organizational structure."

"Princess leads international growth in booming markets like China,"

"The 2017 new build Majestic Princess is being tailored for Chinese cruisers."

RCI has already positioned a new build the Quantum the 1st of her class permanently in China a year ago.

All cruise lines are doing well in the current environment of increased boomer demand, cuts to staff and amenities plus cheap oil so cruising will continue to boom in spite of managements best efforts.

A ship load of corp speak with this guy taking credit for all the success?

  15. I was on both Oasis crossings 2 years ago when it cruised back to Germany for it's 5 year hull inspection some refitting and upgrades many of the crew were leaving when we hit Barcelona. When we reboarded a month later in Amsterdam for the return trip to Ft. Lauderdale most of the crew was new and the ship was still under construction with new restaurants and venues still being worked on and Cats the featured entertainment was not up and running.

It did not impact us but many were upset as they had paid a premium price for a trans - Atlantic and trust me these mega Oasis class ships are designed and programed for 5 to 7 days not a 15 day cruise with minimal ports.

People were raging over lack of venues and space to accommodate 6,000 pax on a 8 sea day in a row voyage. There was an actual fist fight breaking out at the ice show over seats and it was not even a hockey game. Seating was at a premium anywhere on the ship.

It was an interesting set of cruises getting to experience the ship going with trained staff and 14 days to explore it and then the mass dysfunction during 15 days coming back.

Long and short RC gave all pax a 20% rebate to compensate for the inconvenience.

I learned I have no interest in doing a standard 5 or 7 day Caribbean cruise to nowhere on an Oasis class ship and once home I immediately canceled my booking on the new Quantum which was sailing 36 days Ft Lauderdale to Singapore.

My understanding is this is pretty much standard operating procedure for RCI but I recall pax complaining about things not working on the first few Royal cruises as well.

People are willing to pay a premium for the privilege.

I will never take an inaugural cruise on any ship unless heavily discounted and it is going somewhere I want to see.

  16. As a life long Rhode Islander I would worry about hurricanes. I wish more cruise lines would do late spring / early summer cruises from Boston to Montreal. The only way I'd book a fall cruise would be a last minute deal. I would NOT want to be out there with a hurricane.

Point well taken we did the final season cruise Quebec City to Ft. Lauderdale on Princess one year and were hit with hurricane Sandy it definitely changed our itinerary but still a great cruise.

We did the final season cruise on Royal Caribbean last year once again Quebec City to FT. L they call it the Snow Bird and the weather was perfect we even missed the rain in Boston it started to fall as we boarded.

Pack warm clothes that can be layered with gloves, scarf and hat and enjoy.

  17. Thank you for an insightful thread, I watched the video and am interested in watching the full production.

As noted by others the 30 minute Princess shows are a disappointment if one has to arrive up 20 minutes before the show to get a seat and as to the poster who stated the theater is full for the show this is meaningless as the seating capacity is too low to meet demand with 2 shows even if horrendous.

I was on the Oasis TA when Cats was launched, I am a Musical, Opera, big Gilbert and Sullivan fan yet had managed to avoid Cats when it first ran in Toronto years ago. I saw it the first time while on Oasis and all I can say is I avoided it with good reason and be careful what you wish for as longer is not always better especially at 2 1/2 hour with intermission.

That said perhaps Princess is trying to up her game to compete with Royal Caribbeans entertainment at sea domination.

I wish them success and future employment for musicians, singers and dancers at sea which is an area the cruise lines are cutting.

  18. Please break that down to an hourly wage(and any overtime after 40).

    TIA.

You think unskilled workers get overtime and only work 40 hour a week in the Philippines, Thailand, India or China?

Yes by the average Starbucks barista standards ship staff may be hard pressed but they make more then twice the annual income of skilled trades people back home with better and safer working conditions. Many staff are highly educated but with no prospects back home, think of foreign trained Doctors or engineers driving cabs in NY city.

$40,000.00 US will buy most of these people a home and as stated it comes tax free, medical care plus room and board.

Consider migrant farm and slaughter house workers next time you shop for groceries at Costco or Sam's Club and consider what is happening to the foreign underclass in the United States let alone on a cruise ship.

  19.

    Wages / Salaries

The cruise ship staff is divided into two main groups - tipping personnel and non-tipping personnel.

    Tipping personnel

Tipping personnel are the staff with direct contact with the guests who pay them "tips". There are specified amounts of tips per particular positions which are advised to guests prior to embarkation and which vary from one cruise line to another. Such personnel are waiters, busboys /assistant waiters, bar waiters/waitresses, bartenders, cocktail waitresses, etc. Tipping personnel have a small base salary. Most of their earnings are tips. Approximate sample earnings in this group are (in U.S. Dollars per month):

    Waiter - $2500 to $4000

    Busboy / Assistant Waiter - $1500 to $3000

    Bar Waiter / Waitress - $1000 to $2500

    Bartender - $1500 to $3000

Not bad when you come from a 2nd or 3rd world country, free room and board plus medical while on board and play no tax!

  20. Done more then a few cruises, prefer the Europe to America TA'S easier to deal with the time change.

They have stripped the Trans Atlantic these day so few if any ports on them we have had as long as 8 sea days in a row recently.

TA's are best as a mode of travel from or to a destination, we are retired and don't need to detox from work so they can get monotonous.

Trans Pacific's are much nicer especially heading heading West, spend time in Hawaii and hop on there instead of wasting time and travel dollars sailing from the west coast to Hawaii.

A deck 11 A1 on the very aft on M class is one of the best locations you can have for a Trans Pacific on an M class the best of all worlds. We did a Honolulu to Sydney to Singapore 28 days and it was by far our best cruise.

Don't fret about the weather we have only been on one rough cruise and it was a lower inside and it made no difference. Just fond memories to talk of at the table.

  21. Don't bother. Trust me. You're wasting your time. Discussions about sharing drinks turn into Petty University around here and the only class offered is Morality 101.

Some people just like to waste energy allowing things like this to bother them cause they don't have any real problems to worry about. There's no other logical explanation for the outrage this topic causes.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app

I would think Royal would prefer for a cruiser to buy a package and share a few drinks then have a pax bootleg aboard alcohol and they make nothing?

  22. Everyone that earned their status should keep it, however since cruising became more popular over the years throughout all generations they should consider to increase the points needed to gain the status levels to keep the upper tier status in he future to a very small crowd of lets say on a Oasis Class ship max 100 D, D+,P in total per cruise:

I love this solution of limiting the number of each status level on each cruise but Royal could make it very simple by having a lottery to be recognized for your cruising loyalty.

Royal could have a draw on the 1st evening in the theater and the Captain could pull names to see who gets to be D, D+,P on that cruise.

Of course you would have to be present and all who are sailing with you in your cabin or you forfeit. I guess they would only award your Balcony discount once you are drawn and they could award it as OBC?

Imagine the excitement that would generate!

It would be like winning the Power Ball and I really like the idea of only 100 D, D+,P in total per cruise on a 6000+ passenger ship like Anthem.

On a ship like Majesty of the Sea with a passenger capacity of 2,700 you would only have 40 D, D+,P in total per cruise you would feel very special in a Diamond lounge with just 24 people in it more so in the D+ lounge with say 12 cruisers and a max of 4 P on the ship.

    Pop corn is waiting.
