  1. We are sailing from Mobile in April and opted for a GS. The cabin is 330 sq ft plus a 70 sq ft balcony. Having sailed on this ship before, I know the extra space is worth the money. I would never choose a so-called balcony cabin on Veranda Deck as those cabins are only slightly larger than a standard OV cabin and the balcony is less than 25 sq ft with absolutely no privacy!

  2. thank you for the replies..

the junior suites appear to look like the standard balcony cabins on the other suites. Is this true? I'm just trying to visualize what the juniors look like.

because it is an older ship, are the rooms larger in general, than the newer ships?

is the water spring water or is it purified water (yuck)?

any possible guess as to what the perks could be when announced in September? (free wine, Internet, a free specialty dining option)?

the sofa bed is ok.. my daughter and I can share that one.. mom and aunt will have the beds.

Junior Suites are 220 sq ft with a balcony that is less than 25 sq ft. it is totally non private. I offer this information for comparison purposes only.

  3. The Fantasy is definitely one of Carnival's smaller ships, but at 70,000 gross tons and 800+ feet long, she is still a good sized ship. Besides, she just recently received the 2.0 upgrades that only a very few ships have yet received. I have sailed the Fantasy twice and very much enjoyed the experience.

  4. Not simply because I live 30 minutes away, but it's so easy to get in and out of. I have sailed 8 times from the port and it's always been a breeze. Try New Orleans if you want to see what kind of issues are possible getting into and out of a cruise port.

Mayor Sandy Stimpson hints that he's bringing Carnival back to Mobile

Mayor Sandy Stimpson posted a picture Thursday morning hinting at good news. (Sandy Stimpson)Cassie Fambro | cfambro@al.com

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson knew he would get quite the response when he announced his new tourism initiative, aimed at making Mobile a destination.

Then, he went to Miami, a city that's home to several cruise liner companies, including Carnival.

It didn't take long for people to put the pieces together, and Thursday morning, Stimpson posted an image teasing that he would be bringing a cruise ship back to Mobile.

"Now, how will I fit this in my suitcase?" he teased, standing next to Carnival headquarters in the image.

The city is not giving out more information yet, but a press conference is scheduled Thursday when the mayor gets back into town.

For now, many are hoping that the initiative means finally using the cruise ship terminal which has seen far more proms and charity events than ship traffic, with the exception of a few Carnival mishaps.

In his tourism announcement, he laid out the reasons why bringing the cruise industry back to Mobile would benefit the region.

Our success will create jobs in the hospitality industry, grow visitor numbers & hotel room nights and increase tax revenue for the City

Congressman Bradley Byrne joined in on social media, showing his support before an early rotary club meeting.

What do you think about Carnival possibly coming back to Mobile? Let us know in the comment section.

  6. Hello Ralf, welcome to CruiseCritic!

At the top of the page, there are reviews for the ships. Here is the link for Norwegian Getaway - http://www.cruisecritic.com/reviews/review.cfm?ShipID=651 and here is the one for Carnival Breeze http://www.cruisecritic.com/reviews/review.cfm?ShipID=609

I have not been on either ship. The Getaway gets better reviews than the Breeze. In general, fewer people, at least on CruiseCritic, like Carnival ships than other cruise lines. I have sailed on Carnival Glory, and I agree with this sentiment.

    Happy planning!

And my sentiment is that I have sailed Norwegian once, and never again! As for Carnival, not a fan for them anymore either. I recommend that you take a look at some of the other lines Ralf; say Princess. HAL, or RCI. Just my two cents.

  7. Also Celebrity and Cunard, as far as I know. These other lines also offer "military rates" to both active and retired military folks while HAL only offers it to active military.

HAL's military policy is one of the principal reasons that I have leaned toward Princess in recent years. Princess even includes all veterans with more than 3 years active duty. I really appreciate that!

  8. Read that post in question again. The poster titled that post "Wow, the paranoia reigns", a criticism of people who don't like their names displayed. Then he claims that "Many cruise lines post the names of occupants outside each and every cabin on the ship", a completely inaccurate claim. He continues to lecture those other posters by writing "What is the big deal? Folks already know that someone occupies the cabin; who cares if they know my name?".

Well, according to the math I learned in school, one cruise line is hardly "many". Claiming that "many" do this is indeed incorrect because most do not. Which makes calling such a claim "BS" to be pretty much spot-on accurate.

Would you be more pleased if I changed the word from many to some? I accept your "gotcha". Be proud!

  9. That's total BS. I have never been on a cruise ship that does that, and I have sailed on several cruise lines. And if I did, I would remove the name as soon as I discovered it. It is nobody's business who I am unless I volunteer that information. To me it is an invasion of privacy if the cruise line stoops to that tactic. It is a failure to respect the privacy of their passengers.

You obviously have never sailed on Princess Cruise Lines!

  10. Many cruise lines post the names of occupants outside each and every cabin on the ship. What is the big deal? Folks already know that someone occupies the cabin; who cares if they know my name?

As far as meet & greet organizers who may offer other opportunities such as slot pulls, cabin crawls, sailaway get togethers, etc., I have never felt any pressure to join in at all. On the contrary, I have often simply come along as a spectator and had a great time doing so! Meeting new and different folks is one of the reasons I love to cruise! If I ever encounter a slug, I think I will know how to handle it (hasn't happened yet).

  11. Allure, Oasis? Just experienced being in port with one of those behemoths. Not a pleasant experience! Just think about 6000 plus passengers disembarking from only one ship in a given port. What challenges does that cause for a ship that only has about 2000 passengers in port at the same time? Think about it! I will hopefully not have this experience again.

  12. Have done some 3,4, and 5 night cruises, but never involving an investment in airfare. We simply drove to each port. Don't know how one could invest several hundred in airfare for such a short cruise. May I suggest that you consider combining two (as in back to back) short cruises to make the expenditure more practical.

  13. We are taking a cruise in September out of New York. We are arriving one day early to see New York for the first time! We arrive at JFK, leaving from the NCL port the next morning...Where should I get a hotel at???

Dunno, but bring LOTSA money, 'cuz you will need it!

  14. Read a post once that described a situation in which a CPAP that was in checked luggage, was damaged upon arrival to the cruiser's stateroom. When the individual complained, the cruise line determined that the CPAP machine was essential equipment for the cruiser's health, therefore he was escorted off the ship prior to sailing. Guess the cruise line paid for the repairs to the CPAP, but the guest missed his cruise. I would never put my CPAP in checked luggage!
