I was on the Summit last week. The spa there had a promotion offering 80-minute massages for the price of 50 minutes for treatments booked and received on embarkation day. My friend and I asked if that promotion or any other discounts would be offered on a particular port day because we had decided to stay on the ship that day. At first, the staff said we would have to look in the daily for any specials on the day we were interested in, but then a manager said she would give us the 80-for-50 special for that day. My friend said that when she finished her massage, she was told we could have the same deal if we wanted to come back the next day (also a port day).

This was my first time getting a spa treatment on a cruise, and based on that experience, I would suggest asking for what you want and negotiating from there rather than simply waiting to see what is offered in the daily.

I enjoyed my long massage and was happy with the deal we got.

Thank you, this is very helpful. Appreciate it!

  2. Just curious, why do you believe it would be problematic? I've biked on streets in major cities across the world as well as islands in the Caribbean. My plan is to primarily ride the rail trail and then branch off on local roads for a short distance to get to the beach. I understand roads are narrow. If I am comfortable biking in the streets of San Francisco, New York City, or Washington DC would Bermuda be more challenging than that?

  3. I was lucky?!?! They ignored the problem for several days and the fix came on the last night of the cruise! So several nights of poor sleep, countless calls and waisted time waiting around for people to show up.

    Yep that's lucky.

Interesting thing is that as I did some digging. The old six degrees of separation applies. I will wait to see what their reply is and if not satisfied I will escalate this appropriately.

    No I don't let up.

I had a similar experience on NCL this summer. Customer service has gone way down the tubes on this cruise line. Management honestly doesn't care about their customers once they get your money, and good luck hearing anything back from their corporate office on this...it took 3 follow up emails and probably 6 weeks just to get an apology.

  4. I was just on Epic last month. Prior to that, I've sailed on NCL 4 times. I've sailed on Celebrity 5 times as well, most recently in 2012. Both will be very different. To be honest, we found Epic to be overwhelming in terms of number of passengers, and we've sailed on the Freedom-class RCI ships twice so we're used to that size. During sea days and at night, the ship was extremely crowded. We hated that you needed to make reservations for most entertainment and most dining options were sub-par compared to Celebrity. The service was very poor on our Epic cruise, and I imagine over Christmas (which is a time when no one is happy to work) the service would be even worse.

We found the staterooms, service, and food to be much better on Celebrity than NCL Epic. Entertainment was about even. The Epic was more lively and had a more fun atmosphere, but with that comes crowds and noise and LOTS of children. Also, expect NCL to make much more of an obvious effort to sell you things on-board. I'm not saying Celebrity won't try to upsell you, but they are much more discreet about it and not as "in-your-face" as NCL is. The Celebrity experience is much classier and more luxurious, but with that is usually a higher cost.

I would sail on Celebrity sooner than Epic, although I am still a big fan of the Jewel-class ships.

  5. I can only speak to my experience sailing on this ship in August. The ship is in great shape, the food is good (not great), there is an abundance of activities and the ports were great. The service was lackluster, in fact overall some of the worst service we've had at sea. And this was across the board - in restaurants, bars, with shore excursions and guest services. Staff did not seem engaged at all and were for the most part very grumpy. We did receive outstanding service from our room steward though. The entertainment was okay - it was odd because you have to made reservations for most shows. I don't think I would sail on Epic again, but still had a nice time. Any cruise is a good cruise!

  6. In May we were out of our cabin at 8:00 and were in our transfer to our hotel by 8:30

The majority of people embarked in Barcelona so you don't have the craziness at trying to find your luggage and if you carry it off yourself it will be an even faster process. The same with embarkation, we had absolutely no wait and the ship was nearly empty when we got on because most of the passengers were in port.

Thank you! I appreciate your help in answering this question.

  7. If anyone has recently sailed on the Epic and disembarked at Civitavecchia, do you know what the earliest we would be able to self-disembark would be? The ship is scheduled to dock at 7:00am, and we booked a train from Civitavecchia that departs at 9:18am. I realize this is probably cutting it close but stupidly booked a train without looking at what time we docked.

Also, does anyone know approximately what percent of the passengers start and end their cruise in Civitavecchia vs. Barcelona? I'm hoping with the two different embarkation ports, it won't be a mad rush to disembark like it is in Miami or Vancouver on previous cruises.

    Thank you!
