  1. I think the Canyon Ranch Spa folks are way more aggressive than the predecessor. I scheduled a facial and an eyebrow wax on my last Celebrity cruise. Going in, I already knew the cost was way more than I would pay at home, but OBC has to be used for something. After my service was complete, the girl came in with several products she recommended I purchase. I said, "no thank you," and she walked out in a huff. I had to chuckle a little.

  2. "The best I can describe it, he is confused and searching right now, and I will support him in whatever decision he makes. I don't know what people said on here the last couple days, but something upset him and eventually blew up into some turbulence in our home. Maybe we have been too agreeable, but we want to be supportive and respect the decision that he made. I'm a parent, that's my job."

At 15, he's also a teenager which is fraught with issues anyway. Seems to me, you're being a great dad and while you will stumble along this journey, your unconditional love for your son will win the day for both of you.

  3. I feel your pain. We were on a transatlantic in 2013 and would miss the Iron Bowl. Knowing the game was on CBS, we asked over and over (in advance) that the ship's satellite pick up the CBS feed. We were finally told that they couldn't. (I know they can, but that's another beef for another day.) That day, the ship did have ESPN. So we only saw the remarkable "Pick Six" when ESPN broke into its game and showed the replay. This was at 11:30 pm local time in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

  4. For those that used a honeymoon fund, what did your relatives think about it? I'm a little bit nervous to do one of these because I'm not sure how people will respond. Where I live it's customary to have a bridal shower where we receive presents that we can open and a wedding where we (mostly) receive cash/checks.

I just had my first experience gifting a bride and groom through Honeyfund. Being "old school" myself, I initially found it odd, but realized this is a different generation. The couple makes a wish list of things they want to do, and there's a cost per unit. For example, if the couple wants to have a spa day and the total cost is $250, that amount will be divided into ten $25.00 units. You can decide to give one unit (or more). It was easy to pay for with a credit card or use PayPal. I do miss the days of brides registering for silver flatware and china, but brides today are just different.

  5. For the main dining room, you have a choice. Either assigned dining times (6:30 or 8:00 I think), or Select Dining. Select is the one where you can either reserve a time or just show up during the dinner hours. You need to decide which you want when booking. If you don't, you'll automatically be given assigned time.

  6. We did a TA from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale in late November/early December a few years ago. Here's my tip for air fare: Check the fares online with the various airlines. Note that there's a tab for multi cities where you enter the cities and dates. When you find flights that work for you (and after you quit reeling from the cost), call Choice Air and tell the representative which flights you want. We saved $2200 by booking with Choice Air and still got the exact flights that we would have gotten by just going through the airline.

As far as the weather goes for that time of year, you will want to layer with a light jacket.

With respect to Rome, on a different cruise, we used Rome in Limo and had excellent service. They even arranged a private guide for the Vatican for the four of us. No waiting in line for anything and our guide was top notch. She was native Italian with a MFA from McGill University. Both our driver and our guide were very personable and quite delightful.

  7. We were on a TA at Thanksgiving a few years ago. We ate our Thanksgiving meal in the MDR. Roasted turkey was on the menu. No one is going to prepare the stuffing ("dressing" for us Southerners) exactly the way you like it. As I recall, the meal was very good and traditional. Bonus that I didn't spend all day in the kitchen, and the next day ("Black Friday"), I was still on a cruise and the elves had decorated the ship for Christmas.

  8. Thanks for that. Is there any late night drinks venue on board? 10pm would be bit early to finish! We're going to be travelling with friends so we will have company for the post dinner drinks.

My husband and I have been on the Equinox three times and on the Solstice once. (As an aside, we're going on our first Royal Caribbean cruise next week.) For later night adult beverages, the Martini Bar on Deck 4 will be the place to go. It's very social and lively.

  9. This truly saddens me. We did a round trip out of Istanbul in October on the Constellation. We went two days early and loved every minute of our stay there. Our itinerary originally included an overnight in Istanbul, but Celebrity changed that and added Mykonos. Our first night in Istanbul coincided with the bombing in Ankara, which we didn't know about because of traveling all day. We only heard about it from the people (locals) eating dinner at the table next to us. I'm always confident that Celebrity will be extremely cautious in not putting its passengers in harm's way. Of course nothing is guaranteed. I see that I'm rambling; it's just that Istanbul was so beautiful and the people we met were so warm and welcoming. Especially in the hookah bars. [emoji3] I just hate all this violence that is happening all over the world.

  10. Thanks for the info! Our DIL's will be cruising with us, both in their 80's. Just a thought...Will the maitre d' seat just us and then they can meet up with us, coming directly to the table? I am not sure how we would communicate this to them, though. Hmmm... something for my techie DH to ponder on.

Your DILs are in their 80s?!? DIL = Daughter-in-law, right? Or have I been mistaken all this time?

  11. The sidecar has long been a favorite in our family but we like them over ice without the sugar rim.

Jose on the Constellation is a master sidecar maker! (sadly one of the other bartenders made them with bourbon one night……not good!)

    Angela Z.

Jose on the Constellation is the most wonderful bartender! On our recent voyage, he made me "something delicious" for 11 consecutive nights.

  12. We were on the first sailing on the Equinox after it crossed the Atlantic in Dec 2013. We boarded later than normal but that was the only noticeable difference.

We were on that Equinox transatlantic back to Fort Lauderdale. One reason for the delay was that the government was shut down, so there was basically a skeleton crew working Customs. It took quite a while. Plus, all the crew has to disembark and go through Customs.
