  1. Settling this will cost rccl much less than a verdict especially if proven that cameras weren't manned

However rccl didn't enforce their curfew either. So strike 2

A 13yo was the victim no matter which way anyone tries to change it. You absolutely cannot blame the victim of an assault.

Also...since I'm a logical thinker...until it's proven the parents allowed him out and about at 2am...he could have well left the cabin with them thinking he was asleep.

McDonald's probably wishes they had settled too The woman only wanted her medical bills paid...I can't stress that enough because I know so many people still believe she was trying to get a big payout.

Corporations with resources often settle cases when they know they are at fault, but vigorously defend cases when they feel they are not to reduce the number of lawsuits brought against them, given that plaintiff's attorneys often don't get paid until they win or settle. Going to trial is often a relatively greater risk for the plaintiff's legal team than for the defendant with deep pockets. Unless it is clear RCCI did something egregious--watched the assault happen and didn't intervene, for ex--they will probably look at this and decide that if they settle, they'll see many more lawsuits from people who are injured on camera.

  2. Whether RCCl is legally obligated to monitor all of their many cameras in real time 24/7 or stop serving intoxicated passengers (.08?) or aggressively enforce underage curfews are the points on which this case will swing. Aside from that, it strikes me that in this thread there has been a fairly consistent rush to judgment condemning the parents for not properly supervising their child. As has been mentioned before, it's possible that the parents responsibly enforced the curfew and the victim slipped out. While we all hope as parents our radar would kick in and prevent this, stranger things have happened. Even sober parents aren't always light sleepers at 2AM. This has no bearing on the case, because the child was out after curfew, with parental approval or not. Yes, in either case parents are still responsible for what their minor children are up to, and sure, many parents are irresponsible, but the tone in many posts assume recklessness on the part of the parents. We simply don't have the details necessary to condemn their behavior.

  3. I was on the 7/20 Enchantment sailing on which there were several large groups of teens. We noticed similar groups at Universal prior to our cruise. At both venues my opinion is that their behavior was about average compared to any large groups of teens of any nationality: some were rude, some were polite; adult supervision was variable. They certainly didn't spoil my family's cruise, and if I didn't expect some raucous behavior I wouldn't have booked a 4 day Bahamas cruise during school holidays. To be fair, teens don't have to be in large groups or from South America (or the US) to behave badly or take advantage of minimal supervision.

  4. We've sailed on RCI seven times, and other lines a handful more, running the gamut from inside to owners suite. Lately we've been booking suites because we can afford it (for now) and we like the extra space. I've been interested in this thread because of the value and importance some posters have put on the perceived exclusivity which goes along with the suite perks.

I believe that you should expect to get what you pay for. That said, I don't consider myself a fancy person, and if my cruising focus were exclusivity I suppose I would save up and sail on a luxury line. Don't get me wrong: I enjoy the CL and other amenities, but for me, it does not make or break the experience. When I am on vacation I try my hardest to have fun. I like RCL because of all that the line offers; part of that is the opportunity to socialize with a wide variety of people. In my limited experience sailing with other companies, I've found nice people and jerks on all of them, and income/perceived social status has very little to do with it.

So, yes, I'm interested to see what the new suite perks have to offer; but if the cost exceeds the value, I'm happy to travel in a smaller cabin.

  5. We have sailed on Enchantment 2x and Dream 1x, also with a child, though slightly older than yours. We loved both, and are looking forward to sailing on Enchantment again in July. My-admittedly unsolicited-advice would be to consider how important the larger room/balcony and double points are to you, balanced against the hassle of moving to another ship. While our daughter loves Adventure Ocean, it's tough to beat DCL in the kids program department, and it might be challenging to go from Disney to RCL if the kid's programs are a major factor in your vacation.

Sounds like a great trip, either way. Enjoy!
