If you are stopping in Skagway, I would recommend renting a car and driving to the Yukon Territory and back.  Good road and beautiful scenery.  We rented from Avis in advance.

Ditto this... we reserved a car and drove as far as Carcross.  Probably could have made it to Whitehorse no problem, but I chickened out because I wanted to make sure we made it back to the ship in plenty of time.  Fantastic scenery and some wildlife along the way.

  2. Hello all;

I'm wondering if there is a thread or area in the forum that compares Cruise lines.  DW and I are thinking of joining several families from our community on an Alaska cruise this fall, and it will be on Celebrity Line.  Is there really a lot of difference between different lines and ships?   We have only sailed on HAL so far.

  3.

Tripod? On a cruise? For your selfie shots or for something else? I'd leave it home personally. Consider instead an Ultrapod or similar and a monopod if you really need an external support. Maybe better at this point to focus on proper shooting stances and how to use stuff around you to brace your camera and lenses.

Depending upon what kind of photography you want to do, a tripod is not totally out of the question. Sometimes that's the only way to get a shot with long exposures. But I do agree, don't take it if you don't think you'll use it.

I'm going to try a monopod for the first time, on our next cruise. The super long telephoto lens I just bought needs a bit of support, and with technology today (in camera and in lens image stabilization), I should be able to keep my images nice and sharp.

  4. Has anyone tried this on a cruise ship?

That would be tough, given that the ship, (you'd have to be tied up at dock), might have movement or vibration which may show up in a 20 second exposure.... But on calm waters in port, on tripod of course, it might work! Maybe I'll give it a try next trip!

  5. A lot of very good advice here!

I have one other suggestion that I don't think I saw yet:

If you want to save on size and weight, a great travel system is a camera that uses the Micro Four/Thirds sensor.

These are not DSLR's. They don"t utilize a mirror, therefore it can be smaller. It uses an electronic viewfinder instead, and they are very good.

The image quality from these is quite amazing too! (See my website for examples).

My recommendations are for Panasonic Lumix, or for Olympus.

Both of these cameras share the same lens mount, and have some excellent lenses available for birding, when you can get the budget sorted out for one.

And it's true: whatever camera body you buy, it can/will be upgraded from time to time. But your lenses...it's all about the lenses!

These you will have for a very long time. Don't cheap out there.:)

  6. And be sure to see Cartagena if that is one of your stops!

We did a group walking tour through the Old City, and it was great - but we could have done it on our own just as easily, and had more time to explore and photograph this historic place!

Many people were afraid to get off the ship because of some bad reviews on the interweb, but contrary to popular belief, there are NOT cartel gang members waiting behind every corner to kidnap you. :D

We really want to go back there again. It's a beautiful old city!

  7. Hello CC friends,

We are about to book the 14 day segment "South America Passage" from BA to Valparaiso in March 2017.

We are not new cruisers, getting close to 4 stars with HAL, however we normally book verandahs or neptune cabins. This will be the first time we will book an outside ocean view cabin. Do you have any recommendation on which one will be a good bet in terms of noise, convenience, view to outside, or any other considerations?

Would you prefer deck 2, or choose deck 3 for quick access to the promenade?

    Your ideas and input welcome!

    Thanks!

  8. You should have claimed it was a religious hat.

Do they ask Jews to remove their yarmulke?

Key thing to remember is its for religious reasons. Seems to be the way to get around any "law" folks don't like these days so just say that in the future ;-)

    .

Why ever would anyone claim that if it is not true? That would be lying, plain and simple, in order to gimmick the outcome using the honest basis of others.

It's disturbing that someone might think that's ok.

    Just my opinion.

  9. Absolutely, positively, and in all other ways, yes!

You will always have the option to walk around the ship, and you'll want to get out for the pea soup.... but if you want some private viewing time with a glass of wine in the evening, or like to order room service breakfast with a view, or don't want to rub elbows at the railings in Glacier Bay, or it's pouring rain, you will have a covered ring side seat.

And it doesn't matter if you go port or starboard side.
