  1. I just wish they would make up their minds and say if they're going to ban the smoking on balconies or not. I don't smoke but DH does. I'm trying to plan next years cruise and if HAL is going to do a ban then that puts all the lines on a equal level and would make it easier for me to pick a cruise. Actually I think it will work out to our advantage cause I'm just going to book a OV room and save some money.

If HAL quit having smoking on balconies I would not go. Cursing is something I don't have to do.

  2. We've been away from HAL and Cruise Critic for a while, but coming back home to both. We'll be on the Koningsdam cruise from Amsterdam to Rome in September, and I'm wondering how men are dressing on gala nights. Are tuxedos still commonly worn, or if I bring my tux will I be overdressed and stick out like a sore thumb?

I still like to have a TUX, I think it makes it a special time. Bill

  3. Don't worry about dressing up. HAL has become very informal. They have been on a cost cutting crusade and there is no longer a true formal night. You can wear almost anything. You can certainly dress up if you like, but for all intents and purposes it is optional.

Many of the people on this chat board are old timers who still cling to the old traditions. An officer on HAL told me that they really don't care what people wear.

Have fun and dress how YOU like.

    I guess I'm an " Old Timer" LOL :D:D:D

  4. Trust me you will be just fine and no one will be turning you away. Those ships that do Alaska with many passengers only doing partial cruise portions know that many of the passengers are there because of the Land Tours. 99% of those that do the Longer Land Tours DO NOT bring any type of Formal wear. This is just one of the many reasons why Alaska cruises are far less formal. Don't let those that still believe that Formal Nights MUST be a Tuxes and gowns. HAL would much rather accommodate those that spent money for their Land Portion than those that got the last minute $599 special for cruise only :)

I guess if you feel comfortable dressing like that ! just do it.! Me and my family like to dress up some time. I do wear a tux and wife and others dress up. By the way ,I did not spend $599 for the cruise, I spent about $25,000 for seven staying in Neptune suites so I think HAL does not mind accommodating us.LOL :):)

  5. We prefer fixed Late Seating for dinner on all of our cruises.

We never seem to have to rush getting ready for dinner meanwhile missing a sail-away. If we get hungry earlier we order room service snacks, drop by the Lido for snacks or maybe even grab some pizza to hold us over until dinner.

Late Dinner is normally over around 9:30 or so and that's time enough for us to do something afterwards like the piano bar, BB King show or just relax in the Ocean Bar. :)

Hi, We do the same as you do. Works real well for us.

  6. As ever one has said about the smooth sailing on the Vancouver which is true. There is something else that is a big thing. I have been on both several tines and had a great time on them. I think the cost is a big difference The air fare and the times of the flights are not good , at least from Texas. Also have to fool with US customs. The nice Hotels in Vancouver are very hi. All this does not keep me from going out of Vancouver, but it is easer going out of Seattle.

  7. I'm glad to read that. My favourite cruise line does not have casual nights; on nights which are not formal they have informal which is defined as "jacket required, tie optional." About a third of gents wear a tie. This is what I am accustomed to on my last eight crossings/cruises. When dining in an elegant restaurant either on land or at sea I feel more comfortable in a jacket and tie. I hope I am not the only traditionalist on my HAL cruise next month.

Hi, I completely agree with you.:):):)
