  1. When we did the rain forest in Costa Rica I wore really lightweight white loose trousers, and covered my self in anti mozzie spray. I usually get bitten so didn't want to take the risk, I didn't feel out of place or silly, better than spending the rest of the cruise hiding bites under long dresses, or trousers in your case Dave

  2. We've done the imperial China tour with Viking, I wore a dress to dinner every night, the kind that you would wear to a nice restaurant (but I like to dress up on a cruise). I'd say that most people were dressed more casually but quite a few people that we met said they wish they had taken smarter clothes. So I'd make sure you have something smarter with you just in case. We did have a captains cocktail party. You'll love it [emoji2]

  3. Hi, we are also on the 14th May Emerald cruise, have you read through the roll call for our trip? There's lots of good info on there.

The E111 is now called EHIC, it is free and can be applied for online, will take about a week for it to come in the post.

The soft drinks package onboard doesn't include water but I think there may be a water package, but as previously said the tap water is fine to drink, or if you prefer bottled, you can take it on board. We've both got the soft drinks package but I'm taking diet tonic aboard as they don't stock it.

Hope you enjoy your first cruise, I'm sure you'll then be addicted like the rest of us on here,

  4. We're on the same cruise and are staying at The Holiday Inn opposite the docks the night before. We're driving down & have a package that includes 15 days parking. See you aboard [emoji2]

  5. We're on the Emerald in May too. I've kept an eye on the price & have been in to our travel agents 3 times for a price drop, got it every time but lost our onboard credit, but are still up about £1000. The last time was 2 weeks before final payment, and we also had to pay balance there & then, and were told we couldn't have any more reductions.

When we originally book a cruise we make sure that we are happy paying the price at that time, then if we do get a price drop its a bonus. I would hate to miss out on a cruise we really wanted because we left it too late to book.

  6. This forum is so great for advice. I don't know how cruisers that don't read it manage on their cruises lol. I think I'll pack less shorts & sandals & a few more leggings & long sleeved tops, so I have more choice. I always dress smart for dinner so a river cruise will be no different, but no formal wear though. I plan on bringing a few light dresses, some light patterned trousers & some cropped trousers & smart tops for evenings. I'll also be bringing one pair of heels, and a couple of pairs of wedges. I don't do flat shoes on an evening (but that could change if my feet ache too much after all the daytime walking).

  7. We're doing Beijing to Shanghai on 23rd September and I'm just starting to decide what clothes to pack. According to the bbc weather app it's going to be about 25 degrees in Beijing so I wasn't planning on taking any jumpers, coats or boots, mainly summer clothes with maybe one cardigan & a rain Mac just in case
