  1. I need an opinion?

Deck 5 midship or is aft ok?

I'm often concerned about vibrations ..

This is for a transatlantic crossing

    Thanks!

We did cabin 5021 on the SKY for 2 weeks without any vibration or other problems. That is a bit forward. Entertainment is forward and food is aft. Good luck!

  2. When we want a photo and see another couple with a camera on an excursion I ask if the would mind taking one and say I would be happy to take their photo too. Nobody has ever declined. We have had great photos taken on deck by crew members

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Thanks Stretch and Bride for your suggestions. We will look for fellow passenger photographers' date=' or at the least have a crew member take a couple of pictures. We do have dinner reservations at Manfredi's for the celebration[/b'].

  3. There are no professional photographers on board the ship taking pictures of the passengers and there are no facilities on board for processing the photos and making them available to guests. As CyberKat has said, you can ask always a crew member to shoot a picture for you using your camera but they are not professional photographers and you get what you get.

Manfredi's is a good place to celebrate a birthday or anniversary. The dining room staff has a cute routine that they do that includes using your own camera to take pictures of you--and they bring you a cake as well.

Thanks to you and CharTrav for your comments and suggestions.

  4. I realize photographers don't roam the ship like many mass cruise lines do (so glad they don't). But is there maybe one night where a "special" picture is offered. I ask because we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary on a day while onboard.

  5. Just to clarify, deviation is changing the arrival and/or departure date and, as amused said, you will lose your Viking transfer when you travel other than embarkation or debarkation day.

Custom air, when available, allows you to choose your own flights.

Just as a side note, custom air was not available for San Juan. We did request, through our travel agent, that our flights depart really early in the day so that we could arrive in San Juan by mid-afternoon. I don't know whether it was coincidental, but our flights were what we asked for.

As the OP, the issue dealt with purchasing a pre-cruise package offered by Viking. With that all 3 transfers are included. My hope was to select the flights with such a package even it meant a reasonable charge by Viking. AA offers 1 non-stop each day from New Orleans to Miami (and on the return) at an ideal time. Thanks for everyone's input.

  6. What is your port for the begining of your cruise? If it is San Juan, Viking does not offer custom air. But if you are going to book Viking pre-cruise extension then you will fly in two night early, get hotel, breakfast, transfers and not pay the additional $100 pp for deviation separately.

We are doing a post cruise extension for that very reason from BCN to MSP in April 2018. But the extension has not opened up yet for my sailing. It will in a couple of weeks. Custom air fee of $50.pp would be addtional if I want to pick my flight times from Barcelona, a custom air city for Viking.

I would not want to fly anywhere in the US on the Sunday after Thanksgiving!

Thanks for the info Azulann - We fly from New Orleans to Miami for the cruise. Hopefully Viking will offer custom air from here as it's one of their gateway cities. We too hate to fly on that Sunday. When I look at airfares on that Sunday to Miami, they are incredibly expensive. Sounds like y'all are doing a transatlantic. Wishing everyone a safe, relaxing, enjoyable trip. We did a 15 day transatlantic from Rome to Rio on Oceania a few years ago. Our concern was 4 consecutive days at sea might drive us "stir crazy", but it really didn't.

  7. Has anyone had the experience of purchasing the pre-cruise package offered by Viking when it comes to air arrangements? Since our desired package would mean flying in 2 days early, does Viking allow you to choose the flights? Or does Viking also charge for that option as well? Without a pre-cruise package, our Viking air would have us flying on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. This being one of the busiest travel days in the year, we'd sure like to avoid travel that day. Of course I can put this question to Viking, but just thought maybe someone had a similar experience.

  8. The last time we cruised on Carnival the some species we had assigned seating with where three couples where the men were all stationed at Fort Hood and just returned from Kandahar. One of the wives had been in the building when the Fort Hood mass shooting happened. I was proud to meet them. Beware of generalizations. It takes all of us to make the world go round.

We all cruise for different reasons at different times in our lives. Love the people we have meet on O and other lines as well.

Well put and needed to be said.

  9. Well - you got a great deal. I guess it depends on the itinerary as my cruise is still significantly more than $300/pp/day and not likely to change as it is almost completely sold out (for 5/19!!!). :(. They must be doing something right to be almost sold out for May 2019.

I looked at your cruise. Your cost may be more per day, but I'm envious of your itinerary....looks fantastic. Have always wanted to visit that area of the world, but wife's situation now makes it difficult. My only visit was to Singapore on business many years ago. Am sure both of us will enjoy our cruises.:)

  10. That's interesting. What is your itinerary and when?

We are also signed up to try a Viking Ocean. It's a 22 day cruise from Tokyo to Vancouver in PV2 (PH) but are paying much more than $300/day/person.

I too would love to cruise at that price in a PH :D

Our Itinerary is Panama / Central America in November this year (it's listed as 15 days, but 14 nights). In March of this year, Viking offered a 3 category upgrade for booking early. Our cabin is also a PV2. All penthouse cabins are now sold out. Having done a Rhine/Danube river cruise with them many years ago provided us with a $100/person credit.

  11. I was aware that OP was speaking ab out Viking Oceans. That was quite clear. But I didn't understand why the policy would be different between the ocean ships sand the river boats -- although there's no reason why they would HAVE to be the same, I agree. Which is why I didn't post earlier.

But I know that Lou has been on the ocean ships and so it would appear from his post that the policies are indeed the same.

    Mura

Yes Mura, was speaking about Viking Oceans. Original post mentioned nothing about "free" wine, as so many have decided to comment on. Just thought it was a nicety offered for those that wished to take advantage of it. Obviously every perk is not for everyone. Below is response from Viking Oceans. Viking Rivers has a different policy.

Thank you for yourrecent online inquiry. Onboard there is no corkage fee, so youmay bring local wine or sodas aboard and enjoy it with your meals or withinyour stateroom and or any other beverage which is your preference.

    Regards – Viking OceansCruises

Oceania is our favorite cruise line and have enjoyed 6 cruises with them. But after noticing Oceans receiving many awards and some good reviews, we decided to try them. A 14 night cruise was booked in a penthouse, including air fare, transfers, 9 excursions, and 4 specialty restaurant reservations (our TA was kind enough to add gratuities) for a cost of $300/per person/per day. Am not expecting food to be as good as Oceania, but anxious to experience another product. Many complimentary features in the sauna and will be nice to be on our first cruise ship without a casino.

  12. Just off the Riviera today, our 5th O cruise. Our big disappointment was the lack of serving staff in MDR, Waves, and Terrace. Serving staff in the specialty restaurants seemed to be okay. Possibly this was due to the ongoing "noro" situation, though it was never explained as such. One night in MDR 2 hours had gone by since we first sat down and the desert menus had not yet been given out. We left without same, as we wanted to make the 9:00PM show. Tables in Waves and Terrace stood unbussed for periods of time we had never experienced during our 4 previous O cruises.

  13. Their cruise was Dec 2nd FP would be about Sep 2nd the admin fee would kick in about Aug 2nd For cruises 14 days & under it kicks in at 120 days

Since the admin fee was withheld I am guessing they were on the 10 day cruise

Yes, it was the 10 day cruise leaving December 2. Thanks for taking the time to help me. God willing, we may yet be on that cruise.

    Mike

  14. We just cancelled a reservation made in May 2014 for a cruise leaving in December 2015 (this year). Oceania is refunding $250 of the $750 deposit, but is retaining the other $500 to go towards any future cruise we book within 24 months. I'm told if we do not book a future cruise, the $500 is lost. Was this policy in effect at my time of booking (May 2014)?

    Thanks

  15. A cruise is cancelled at the last minute due to "insured" reasons, but that insurance was not sold by Oceania, therefore O retains entire cruise cost. Does the person still receive a cruise "credit" from O when it comes to future perks?
