  1. How difficult is the metro from the airport to Kong-Nytorv station? We are staying by Nyhaven just a short walk..I hope. (Hotel Bethel S.) After the long flight, I know we don't want a tough transfer. But have done trains and buses to our hotels in the past.

Where did you buy a ticket?

With large suitcases, are there steps anywhere?

Where do you put your bags?

    How long a trip?

    Thanks for the help.

Do you remember the cab cost to the port? Thinking we'll do that on embarkation day.

Our experience was similar to CruiserTarheel's. You'll see the TI at the airport- we bought a Copenhagen card there. It was no problem avoiding steps- there were escalators and elevators at the airport and at the metro station. Everyone on the metro has luggage and they just kind of hold on to it. The metro from the airport to Kongens Nytorv was a breeze and it was an easy walk to Hotel Bethel, which you will love, by the way! I asked at the front desk how much a taxi to Oceankaj would be and was told 205 kroner- about $30. The hotel has an agreement with a taxi company so it's a set fee, which made me more comfortable. We (family of 4)were looking at about $20 anyway to take the metro and then the bus, so it was a no brainer! We did do the bus, then metro bit to get to the airport after the cruise. As other people have mentioned, Bus 25 from the port to Norreport to catch the metro runs a bit infrequently. We waited for the bus about 30 minutes, but after that it was a very smoothe transfer to the metro at Norreport. The driver was incredibly patient and when we didn't have the right amount of cash with us, he just waved us on and we bought our tickets at the metro station instead. Enjoy your cruise!

  2. Hi DV,

I have to add my huge Thanks for all of your help!

We were in Copenhagen 6/13. It was a beautiful Saturday in Copenhagen & we absolutely loved it!

We were able to do exactly what we wanted. The Copenhagen Card was absolutely worth it! We used it for Canal Tours Copenhagen, Rosenborg, Christianborg, & transportation.

We used Bus 26 from Indiakaj to City Hall Square, made our way back to do the canal tour, and ended up at Rosenborg.

We were able to go out the back of Rosenborg and caught Bus 26 back to Indiakaj from Georg Brandes Plads very easily.

We didn't want to leave...caught the 3:15 bus for an all aboard at 3:30!

Now that we've done it we know how easy it is!!

Denmark was very good to us in Skagen as well. We had a beautiful & fun day in Skagen. Put our feet in both oceans, saw the buried church, the Ancher home, and loved the art by the Skagen painters in the museum. The museum is being renovated so we didn't get to see the entire collection, unfortunately!

We met some wonderful Danish people...especially at the pastry shops. I'll never forget the young, pretty Danish girl who told me just what kind of traditional pastry I should get! It was a twist with poppy seeds, was just a little sweet!

Thanks again for making me feel confident to do Copenhagen on my own and answering all of my questions!!

    Chris Stone

So bus 26 is running on weekends?

  3. Sippican or anyone else who has been in the Copenhagen airport:

We are also taking the 12:15 Air Canada flight directly to Toronto. Our daughter will be flying on Lufthsansa to JFK. Did you happen to notice if Lufthsansa is in the same area as Air Canada so that we can wait together after we go through the passport and security lines?

    Thanks so much.

  4. I 'd love to swim in the Baltic just once and Tallinn seems like the most likely spot to get this in. Has anyone been to the beach in Pirita? Do you have recommendations on the best way to get there and back? I'm actually more concerned about the getting back part- it seems like taxis might not be readily available out there. We of course want to do the old town as well. Is this too ambitious?

  5. If you confirm that your mother can't go, I would suggest switching passenger positions before you take your mother off the reservation. Our reservation showed me as the first passenger, perhaps because I had used my credit card for the deposit, even though I had specifically requested that I be listed third. I don't drink. I called my TA and asked that I be listed as the third passenger because of the beverage package and they had no problem switching it. I suspect they have to deal with this often. It would seem like by removing your mom from the reservation, your brother would automatically move up in line, but just in case they have some weird rules about that, I would have the positions changed first and maybe take your mom off the reservation the next day.

  6. We are from Buffalo and flew Air Canada to Europe and back last summer, as well as in November of 2012. This summer we're flying on Air Canada from Toronto to Copenhagen with a connection at Frankfurt (Lufthsansa) and then we have a direct flight back from Copenhagen to Toronto. We have had nothing but good experiences, and like someone said earlier Air Canada has a lot of direct flights in and out of Toronto and if not, the connections are much better than we've found out of Buffalo.

Last summer, our son, who was flying in to Toronto to meet us for our flight overseas, was on a flight which was delayed, and it became clear that he would miss our flight. We were very upset (even though he was 22 at the time!) and thought about switching to a later flight, but were told that they didn't have four seats available on another flight until the following day. The Air Canada gate attendants assured us that they would care of him and we left on our flight without him. Several hours into our flight, a flight attendant brought us something that looked a bit like a telegram that gave us the details of the flight that our son had been put on! They took care of rerouting his luggage, gave him a voucher for dinner and put him in first class on a flight that arrived at our destination five hours after we did. You can't beat that for customer service!

  7. I go to my NCL for the 4TH of July Getaway and there is no Cagneys listed to book.

I wish they could get their act together.

Cagney's was not showing up as an online booking option for me for my July 5th cruise so I called NCL yesterday to see if I could book it over the phone. The person I spoke to, who admittedly seemed a bit confused on the matter, told me that Cagney's could be booked for pre-July cruises (I think she said pre July 3rd or 4th) but not for cruises beginning after that date. She suggested that I keep checking as she thought there was a possibility that the date would be changed.

  8. There are several ports in Stockholm where a cruise ship can dock. But only Stadsgården Port has the HOHO boats. There will be only one cruise ship docked there and I think it is your ship, so what concerns the HOHO boats there will be no problem with passengers from other ships. But it may be crowded in the Vasa Museum and Gamla Stan.

Ok-got it! Thank you so much!

  9. It's only the passengers from one of those ships that can use the HoHo boats so in that sense one or 4 ships won't make a difference.

I don't know how crowded it will be and I don't really have any good advice. I also don't know if a shore excursion would make things easier, Old town will still be crowded...

I'm sorry- I don't think I understand what you are saying regarding the number of ships being irrelevant with respect to the HoHO boats. Are you saying that the HOHO boats can accommodate the passengers from one cruise ship? Or that they can't accommodate the passengers from even one ship? Or something else- sorry- I'm just not following.

I was thinking of doing a shore excursion only because of my concern that the usual transportation options would not be available to us because of the masses of people.

  10. We will be one of four ships arriving in Stockholm on Sunday morning, July

12th. Yikes! Our plan was to grab some seats on a HOHO boat to Vasa and then find our way to Gamla Stan. Assuming many of those 8000+ people will be DIYers, my guess is that everything will be jammed up, including the HOHO boats, the buses and the taxis, as well as the major tourist attractions. Do you have any advice on how to best deal with these circumstances or should we just throw our hands up (and our money!) and sign up for a shore excursion?

  11. We did the Grand Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona to Venice last summer. We loved the cruise- the ports, of course, were incredible. I, like you, was concerned about the ship after what I had read online but we loved it! If you're looking for a rock wall or a skating rink, this is not your ship. Otherwise, go for it! The common areas are beautiful. The forward lounge, right over the bridge, has wall to wall windows and is a beautiful spot for relaxing and enjoying the views. On the aft end, right behind the buffet, there are tables under a roof for those who want shade or tables outside at the very end of the ship for sunshine. We always had our breakfast out there and enjoyed having a drink or playing cards or reading in the late afternoon after cruising. Occasionally there was a folksinger or a small band out there and on one occasion they served a buffet dinner out there. There are also tables and lounges in a tiered area down towards the children's pool area. It seems as if most people don't even know about it, because it was always uncrowded and relaxing. The ship is the perfect size. Don't hesitate- it's wonderful!

  12. Hi Danish Viking,

We will be staying at Hotel Bethel and starting our cruise on a Sunday. I noticed that Bus 1A goes to Osterport.

Would you recommend taking that to connect to the cruise ship/26 shuttle to get to Oceankaj or is it better to take the metro to Norreport and then the S train to Osterport? Just wondering which connections would be easier.

I enjoy reading all of your posts!

    Thanks so much.

  13. We were lucky enough to do the Mediterranean last summer on the Spirit. Our very favorite spot was the Raffles Terrace Bar behind the Raffles buffet. We picked up our breakfast at the buffet and left the noise and chaos behind to eat there almost every morning. They have tables in the shade or tables in the sun if you prefer. It's just beautiful back there and it seems that most people don't know about it. It's also a relaxing spot to have a drink, or read or play cards in the afternoon after touring. Sometimes in the afternoon there is a live band or soloist playing (but nothing loud like the main pool) and they had a barbeque out there once. There are steps down to terraced seating and the kiddie pool area. Our cruise had very few children so that area was an excellent spot for sunbathing away from the crowds.

The Observation lounge was terrific also. It has very comfortable seating and a wonderful forward view. People just relax and can order drinks if they like. It's nice and bright in there and if Bingo's your thing, you can play in daylight instead of in one of those interior lounges where you feel like you're in a tunnel!

    Enjoy the Spirit! I'm jealous!

  14. The Star bar didn't have a forward view except overlooking the pool area. They have some outside lounges forward on deck 13 that have forward views, but nothing inside that I am aware of.

OK good. Thanks. I was kind of picturing that area to be like an unimproved space on the top of the Spirit that had 2 or 3 chairs that nobody ever used, so this is good to hear.

  15. ncl website has updated deck plans for star to reflect o'sheehan's on deck 8,

where moderno and blue lagoon were. also, moderno and mojito bar on

deck 13 where star bar and cagney's overflow were.

    tom

We sailed on the Spirit last summer and very much enjoyed the open-air area aft behind the buffet. It was fun to take our breakfast or lunch outside or have a drink or just relax/read/play cards and enjoy the aft view. We also liked the lounge with its beautiful forward view. The Star doesn't seem to have anything comparable so we were pretty much planning to spend time in the Star Bar and hoping that it had a forward view. The new deck plans look like the Mojito Bar will be surrounded by Moderno and Cagneys and therefore not have much of a view. Can someone who's been on the Star before comment on this? Other than the promenade or the pool which can get pretty hectic, is there anywhere to sit and enjoy the view?

  16. While trying to book a tour in St. Petersburg I'm getting more and more confused: what company to choose? I was suggested 4 companies: SPb, Alla Tours, Best Guides and TJ and I've already e-mailed them all. I liked all the answers, the prices are more or less the same, the suggested itinerary too, there are just a few differences. Please, help! Does anyone have suggestions, advices?

P.S. we are traveling with two children - 9 and 11 years old

    Thanks in advance!

    Jo

If you do not find a Best Guides child friendly tour that appeals to you, you might want to narrow down the itinerary choices from each of the four companies you are considering by looking at what is essential to you and what isn't. Take a look at the description of various sites on the Best Guides website or in Rick Steve's guidebook, etc. and decide if you need to see every possible palace and church or if you could skip some. Would the boat ride and hydrofoil trips break up the van time and the heavy palace/cathedral itineraries for the kids (and for you?!) If so, you can eliminate the tours that don't include those. Is a subway ride important? Do you want a sit down lunch with a little time to relax both days or is a packed lunch on the go ok for one day? Would you prefer to have lunch included so you don't have to worry about whether you will have enough or too many rubles or would you prefer to try to keep it a little cheaper on your own? You might have to compromise on some of what you want and don't want, but at least that should narrow your choices considerably. Good luck!

  17. I have a few questions that I haven't been able to find the answers to online. I read that the aft mini suites on the Star and Dawn have a sloped balcony partition that leaves a space between where the partition ends and the railing and allows people to see into nearby balconies. The space is apparently just large enough to permit access from adjacent cabins. I'm wondering if this is also the case for the forward MB mini suite cabins. Has anyone stayed in any of these mini suites? Also, do you know whether the treadmills, ellipticals, etc are located on the 11th or 12th deck and port or starboard? We're looking at a starboard MB mini suite cabin next to the spa on deck 11 and also one of the most forward cabins on the port side for a Baltic cruise. There's a significant difference in price between the MB and the midship MA mini suites or we'd just upgrade. Thoughts? Thanks so much.
