  1. Are the floors in the buffet area still real slippery? When we cruised on her a few years ago you had to walk very carefully. Supposedly the type of tile they used became slippery in the tropical climate. Just curious if they were able to fix it?

We were on the Jan. 14th sailing as well and the floors are still very slick. We had to really watch our step and even then we both slipped several times...

  2. We plan on getting an Uber XL from our hotel in Texas City to the cruise port. I’ve been trying to schedule a pickup ahead of time but when I go to finalize the booking it keeps saying unable to process at this time.

    Any ideas there?

Uber does for sure go to the cruise port right?

Yes, Uber (and Lyft) both go to the cruise port. If you’ve never used Lyft before, they give you $5 off your first ride when sign up.

Not sure about why it won’t let you schedule in advance. We waited to schedule our ride until right before we were ready to be picked up at our pre-cruise hotel close to Houston Hobby airport and we waited 7 minutes for our car to arrive. After the cruise we waited until we had made it through customs and were outside the terminal. We waited 5-10 minutes. Hope this helped!

  3. It is 10:30 now and we are sitting at the hotel, port still closed, and web cam does not show the ship berthed, so it is going to be later than they thought even.....about later flight reservations, VERY WISE this time of the year....as the cold fronts push down from the north, we get so much warm, humid air pushed back towards the coast this is a problem during the spring months for sure......(but for those of us living in Texas, we LOVE the mild winters that create this fog when the fronts do push thru!)

The Breeze and LOS are both sitting in the Houston anchorage; my in-laws are enjoying an extended vacay.. :)

  4. Has anybody ever used Uber from Houston to the Port of Galveston. I was wondering what the price difference was compared to Galveston limo and Galveston Express. I have never used uber before so any information on this would be good.

I’m not sure how much Galveston Express charges. I can tell you we paid $103 + $10 tip in January for Lyft Plus (equivalent to UberXL) to get 4 of us and our luggage to the port from the Houston Hobby SpringHill Suites. After the cruise we paid approximately $10-$15 more to go from the port to Houston Hobby. Hope this helps!

  5. We will be in Montego Bay in 2 weeks! We booked this cruise because this is one place we haven't been on any of our other cruises. Now, with the state of emergency and the violence, I'm a little worried to do an excursion.

Has anyone been to Montego Bay in the last few weeks? What was the situation like? Did you feel safe getting off the ship? And, are there things to do near the port, like a beach or shopping that would be considered safer than an excursion?

Looks like the Dream will be the only ship in port that day. Any info is appreciated! Thanks

We were there on the Breeze on January 17th which was a few days before reports of violence started hitting mainstream media. We traveled 18km south from the cruise port for a river rafting excursion and afterward we went to the beach at Hard Rock resort near the cruise port for a couple hours. We saw nothing that hinted of any violence which doesn’t mean it isn’t occurring. I would go back with no reservation.

  6. Port Authority of the Cayman Islands,

Is a site someone posted about the ships who will dock in Feb. at Grand Cayman. On my docs it says the Paradise is to dock at 8am on 2-14. But this site shows us docking at 7am. Not a big deal as I have a tour booked for 9:30. Which one should I go by?

Is there a time zone difference between your docs and the website?

  7. What I don't understand....why can't you go to the DMV and get a replacement. I realize each state is different in their rules...but my children misplaced/lost their licenses in Illinois and PA and just went down to local DMV office and got a replacement....Only difference they added a number to the License number showing the number of duplicates. I think my son had 3 duplicates before turning 25!! LOL

Because Kansas is slower than molasses in January. They no longer print them up in the DMV office, it comes from a company in Georgia. DW’s recently took 6 weeks to get hers in the mail (it came while we were cruising.)

  8. Not in this case. OP said that her granddaughter lost her license. She doesn't have the old one.

Actually my wife used her temp paper Kansas DL to board the ship since it is an official KS DL but they just told her she could have used her expired DL if she had wanted to, TSA told her the same applies for flying as well which I included as a point of information.

  9. So going on a cruise with family members. It will be my 21 year old granddaughter's first cruise in 2 weeks. Last night she lost her drivers license claims she thought some one took it. The state of Kansas will issue her a temporary one on paper and mail her new one in 3 to 4 weeks. Called Carnival for my daughter who is so worried about the granddaughter (her daughter) not being allowed to board. The Carnival rep said she could board with the paper one provided it has her picture on it, which Kansas temporary does. Has anyone had to deal with this and did you find that to be the case? Just don't want to drive all the way and find they won't let her on.

My wife had a similar experience with a temp drivers license from Kansas (although she is way past 21 and she still had her temp paper license.) To make a long story short, she renewed her drivers license on Dec. 4th but by Jan. 13th when we were flying out for the cruise, her new license had not yet arrived. What we discovered is an expired drivers license is still valid for one year after it expires for the purpose of establishing proof of identity and age although you can’t drive using it. I would contact Carnival again to see what they say. Hope this helps

  10. Flying into Houston Hobby the day before, 4 adults, one toddler. Not crazy about the area around the airport hotels.

Could stay near the airport, uber somewhere for diapers and baby supplies (instead of shlepping them on the plane), find dinner somewhere and then get a service to take us to the port. This seems to run about $265 plus any uberring we use. Or we could rent a car, drive down the highway to stay outside of Houston in a better area with shopping and food nearby and park at the port. This alternative would be about $225 for a car (plus gas) and $65 to park. Having a car would give us some flexibility but time spent renting and returning the car, handling our own luggage, etc.

    Any opinions?

We recently stayed at SpringHill Suites adjacent to HOU last month arriving the day prior to sailing. Their shuttle driver drove us to Walmart, to a restaurant for dinner, etc. for no charge other than tipping him. We then took an UberXL to he Port the next day for right around $100 split 4 ways and then $115 coming back to HOU post cruise.

  11. We are sailing on the 4/22 Liberty OTS, arriving back in Galveston on 4/29. I'm looking at flights home and have 3 options:

    11:10 - HOU

    12:00 - IAH

    2:40 - IAH

While I'd like to take the 11:10, I'm concerned it may be too close, but is a 12:00 flight safe?

Would it be safer if I have transportation arranged versus calling an Uber?

    Thanks!

We were on the Breeze two weeks ago and did self-disembarkation and we were off the ship and standing outside the terminal by 8:45 AM. We waited until we were outside before we ordered our UberXL and we waited 5-10 minutes and were at HOU by 9:30. Personally I would book the 12:00 PM flight. I think what you’ll find is there will be a ton of drivers in the area waiting to pickup cruisers coming off LOS & the Breeze and they all do Uber & Lyft so it doesn’t matter which you use.

  12. We just did it on Jan. 19th when we were there on the Carnival Breeze. You get on 4 seat Can-AM UTVs in the parking lot outside the Carnival port (Puerto Maya) and drive them ~12 Km north in a procession along the main road parallel to the west coast to Aviomar Adventors on the north side of the island which is about 30 minute drive each way. If you booked it through the cruise line they will wait for you even if you are late coming back (unless you get lost in Three Amigos drinking margaritas.) Couple other things; you will get dirty driving the ATVs so pack accordingly and the ride in the little speedboats is very rough so if you have a bad back you may want to reconsider this excursion...

  13. How is the availability of Uber between Hobby-Galveston? I just worry About getting to the ship/airport

There will be literally dozens and dozens of Uber/Lyft drivers around. We stayed at Houston Hobby SpringHill Suites and after we booked our car via the Lyft app, the car was in the hotel parking lot to pick us up in under 10 minutes; post cruise it took less than 5 minutes.

  14. Hello all, looks like a lot of the hotels in Galveston has raised their prices for the weekend after Valentine's day. We are flying into IAH and taking a Uber to a hotel. Looking for recommendations and or cities I should look for hotels that are close to Galveston. Thank you for any advice or guidance you can provide.

There are quite a few hotels around Houston Hobby Airport. You might consider staying there and then catch an Uber to the port when you are ready to go which is about a 45-minute drive.

  15. It's going to be about 90 miles from The Woodlands to the port in Galveston. Check with Uber and see what they charge.

In addition to Uber check out Lyft. We checked both services when we were ready to go and found Lyft to be a little bit less expensive plus if you are new they give you $5 off the first ride. Interestingly enough what you will find is that most of the drivers are working for Lyft and Uber at the same time...

  16. We stayed at the Houston Hobby SpringHill Suites near the Houston Hobby airport arriving the afternoon before we sailed. Their shuttle picked us up at the airport and later gave us a ride to and from a close restaurant for dinner. The next day we used Lyft to get to the port and we were there in right under an hour. If SpringHill is not your thing then there is a Marriott close by and a handful of other hotels. Easy smeasy!
