  1. Thank you all so much for replying and for the excellent information. The princess representative gave me the wrong information obviously since you guys were actually on the ship. You just saved me from canceling the cruise which I was about to do after the representative told me that masks on this cruise would be mandatory indoors... I always wear a mask at work, to me having to wear it the whole time indoors is not a vacation so I am very happy to hear the great news. Thanks so much again for taking the time to respond!!

  2. Hello! I would greatly appreciate it if someone could please tell me whether or not masks are mandated on the Discovery Princess Seattle to Seattle Alaska cruise this august. Princess representative said it is but their site says only Northbound or Southbound between Vancouver and Whittier must wear masks. I really need to know as I only have 9 days to cancel my cruise and rebook with the cruise with confidence policy as my cruise leaves august 21st. We do not want to have to wear a mask indoors so I would cancel and rebook if this policy is in effect for this cruise but I just can't get a straight answer from Princess. If anyone has been on the discovery princess or another princess Seattle to Seattle Alaska cruise since late June (that is when this went into effect) I would be very grateful if you could shed some light on this issue. Thank you in advance!

---Wow!! Thank you SO  MUCH RSS for taking the time to write and illustrate all of that for me! That was so kind of you! I just checked and those cabins are not available but I will check every day .. hopefully after final payment one opens up. Thanks so much again for going above and beyond to help a fellow cruiser!!!

    @dimiegirl:
Very easy -- the following 16 "BW" balcony cabins (circled in blue) are all the same price as your cabin and are COMPLETELY UNOBSTRUCTED looking straight out.  (You'll see part of the awning from the restaurant below but it is completely below your floor.)

See if any of these cabins are available now; if not I would keep looking every day because cancellations or moves happen more often than not.

    • BONUS if you can score either E424/E425 (2 largest BW balconies in this section), or E428/E429 (2nd largest):

      Unobstructed BW Port:  E414-E416-E420-E424-E428-E432-E436-E438*
      Unobstructed BW Starboard:  E415-E417-E421-E425-E429-E433-E437-E439*

*E438/E439 are completely unobstructed looking straight out but aft view looks towards tenders.

  5. Thanks everyone for your input and pictures. I thought we were ok with the obstruction but after seeing the pics from astroflyer and koreakruiser we are second guessing this...

CU64, why do you recommend the fours? Are the lifeboats not as obstructive? We see that there is a category BF, which is also obstructed but seems to be a step up from what we are in right now, which is BW... any thoughts on the difference between these two obstructed categories? Thanks again everyone for your guidance.

Should be similar to this one from Royal Princess:

    https://cruisedeckplans.com/DP/deckplans/stateroom-details.php?ship=Royal-Princess-III&cabin=E504

For Alaska we like to sail Island or Coral in an ocean view because we spend 90% of our time in the enclosed pool area.

    Hi Lee,

Thanks so much for your quick reply and the picture showing what we should expect our balcony to look like. That was very helpful! We will keep this balcony then.. We can still see standing up and we can use the saved money for an excursion! Thanks again!!!

  7. Hello everyone,

I am currently booked on the discovery princess in cabin E504 which is obstructed ... I chose it because it is in an area where there is not much going on deck 7 the promenade deck (i am on deck 8 ) I was trying to find a cabin in between the lifeboats to hopefully get a less obstructed view but either they aren't available or are available in a location with main venues underneath. My question is how bad is the obstruction? We are going on an alaskan cruise and would like to be able to see the beautiful views  . Could we see if we are standing? The cabins without an obstruction are significantly more expensive. Not sure if it is worth paying hundreds more. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

That’s right….you cannot step out of your room to your balcony.  You are always in your room.  You can walk over to the wall and open the window but you are never outside.

There are some rooms which have true balconies.  Here is one kind.  Others are found far in the aft, overlooking the wake.

Thank you for sending the pics. I dont like this balcony with the porthole look. I think i rather have the one I have booked. Thanks again for clarifying .

  9. Hello again, for those who have traveled recently on Celebrity do you know if they still have the cocktail parties for select and higher tiers? I didn't see anything mentioned at all in my reservation. In the past it was mentioned. They used to host them on the sky deck ... We really enjoyed those get togethers.

We had the bed near the balcony and it kind of cut the room in half. I’d recommend one near the bathroom, then you have a great area all the way to it.

Take a look at the video. We loved the IV. It worked great for us. It is unique, but it more than just a window that opens up half way. Most balconies I’ve had on other ships have big overhangs and the sides come all the way out, obviously to the rail. No you cannot sunbathe on an IV, but I couldn’t on most other balconies.

    But to each their own.

Thank you everyone for your input. After reading all of your responses I am now very glad I got the room with the bed by the bath as I really value a spacious layout. Thanks so much again for taking the time to help me!

You know, i hope, that there is no balcony, just a window.  The window opens but the effect is nothing like a balcony

Hello, are you saying that you cannot step out of the room onto the balcony? Are there other categories that do have a real balcony?

  12. HELLO. We decided to take the plunge back into cruising. We just booked 7223 infinite veranda on the celebrity edge. I wanted to know if this cabin has the bed by the balcony or the bathroom. We enjoy having the bed close to the balcony. If this is not the case we would call to ask for another cabin. I can't tell from the information about the location of the bed with respect to the balcony.  I appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you!

That would be my recommendation as well.  I've stayed in Bayeux on a couple of occasions, and it is very convenient to the D-Day beaches.    We stayed at le Castel http://www.hotel-chambres-hotes-bayeux-lecastel.fr/ and at Hotel Bayeux.  Of the two, both DW and I would choose le Castel a second time.  Cute little guesthouse.

Or, you might consider staying in Arromanche.  We've stayed at the Logis Hôtel de Normandie.  Clean, comfortable, not too expensive, and literally across the parking lot from the beach.

Bayeux is home to the Notre Dame de Bayeux cathedral, which is nearly as large as, and older than Notre Dame de Paris.  Not to mention almost devoid of tourists.   It makes for a nice, peaceful evening stroll on your arrival day.   There is also the Bayeux Tapestry which depicts the 1066 Norman Invasion of England.  I would suggest that for another trip, honestly.

Do you know what you would like to see?  Anything on your tourist checklist for the area?   I would assume that the American Cemetery is on the list, and very worthwhile, if not almost mandatory.

I was actually just going through my map of points of interest from previous trips, thinking about how they could be tackled for someone on a cruise.   I put together this map with POIs: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1WDXYCwzdCmuYkGrpTzY6tSczcM8&usp=sharing

Note that I've not been to any of the sites to the East of Arromanches, nor have I driven to the port.    Hopefully this helps to give you the lay of the land.  If you have any questions, let me know.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. It was very generous of you! We have decided that it would be easier to go in and out of London so we rebooked for the previous week it seems less expensive as well as easier especially after getting off a transatlantic flight. Again, I really appreciate your help.

  15. I can’t thank you all enough for this very valuable information and all of your suggestions and possible options . I am looking at the train schedules to see what will work best as the car option is seeming quite expensive as is the private tour option . I was thinking of seeing if there are others in a similar situation that may want to share a private tour from Paris to Normandy and end at the cruise port. I could post it in the roll call to see if there is interest to help with the cost and ease of going from Paris where we are arriving to see Normandy beaches. Thanks so much again for your help and sharing your knowledge and experience!

  16. Thank you both so very much for this very valuable and detailed  information . I am going to look into renting a car in CDG and staying in Bayeux doing a day tour of Normandy de beaches  then return the car to LeHavre and take a taxi to the cruise ship. Thanks again for your input and direction. I really appreciate the excellent advice!

  17. Thanks so much for taking the time to give such detailed information. I really appreciate it. We are from the United states. the cruise leaves august 16th at 8PM. We were planning on arriving on the 15th and doing a tour of normandy the morning of the 16th before the cruise leaves. We are willing to stay wherever is best for this situation. We have seen paris already so that is not an issue we just want to see the normandy d day beaches and cemetery before we leave on our cruise the 16th (departs 8PM) on the princess crown. Thanks again for your help!!!!

  18. Hi Everyone,

We are starting and ending our cruise from the LeHavre port. We were planning on flying in the day prior so that we can visit Normandy the day of departure since the cruise doesn't leave until 8pm. I thought Bayeax was the closest place to stay but now I am finding out it is farther away then staying in Paris. Can anyone recommend the best way to handle this? Should we stay in Paris and then take the trip from Paris to Normandy or Stay closer? Not sure about the best way to travel to LeHavre if we are going to stay there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated . Thank you!

  19. Thank you everyone for your responses. Actually the items i am looking for I have bought in cancun and cozumel before and they are authentic from Mexico. I will check out the mazatlan and puerta vallarta spots that Mike and Jenn recommended. Thanks again for your input. I really appreciate it.

  20. Hello, I am going to be on a mexican riviera cruise that stops at puerta vallarta. I am looking to buy a lot of mexican toy flutes, bobble heads, maracas, etc... for a cinco de mayo party. Could anyone recommend a shop that would sell these type of inexpensive mexican souvenirs.  We are also stopping at Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas if those locations are better for these types of souvenirs. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Remember this is Holland trying it. Not Princess. You still can get extra in the MDR.

Princess only charges extra if you want the Crown dinner in the MDR. To me if

I wanted the Crown dinner I would go to the Crown.

I was just on the regal princess last month and ate in the crown grill one night. They have a policy at that specialty restaurant that you can order 1 main entree but as many apps/sides and desserts as you want. If you want an additional main entree there is a 10 dollar fee (in addition to the 29pp fee to eat there(
