Well, it's been 27 days since I made my final payment on our BF stateroom. Prices have not shifted a single penny on any room category on the entire ship, which is mystifying. I cannot comprehend why NCL is keeping the prices the same when inventory is moving SOOOOO slowly. Here is the breakdown of inventory changes since I started tracking on November 9th:

    • Interiors: Inventory has decreased by 28 rooms. Currently 70% still available.
    • Oceanviews: Inventory has increased by 18 rooms. Currently 44% still available.
    • Balconies: Inventory has decreased by 21 rooms. Currently 52% still available.
    • Mini-suites: Inventory has decreased by 19 rooms. Currently 71% still available.
    • Havens: Inventory has increased by 1 room. Currently 83% still available.

In all, inventory has decreased by 49 rooms in the 56 days that I have been tracking it. That means they are selling less than 1 room per day. We are 93 days from sailing and there are currently still 1222 rooms available. Do the math! At 1 sale per day, they will still have over 1100 rooms available at sailing! Something has got to give. They absolutely have to lower prices in order to fill the ship!

Does that site you're using tell you the number of Sailaway (I.E. unassigned) cabins sold?  Unless you know that, you don't really have a good idea of how full the ship is.

  2. ...we swore off United. Well, United was our cheapest option, once again... and we thought long and hard before booking it."

This is why corporations don't care about customer satisfaction. They know you'll be back to save some money.

Full disclosure - going to our next cruise will be on United. And like grandmarnnurse, cost was a very strong factor. OTOH, I have such low expectations UA would have a hard time disappointing me. :-)

  3. ....Just how does the OP plan to fly from a closed airport?....
But, but, but, cruise air is supposed to get us to the ship on time. I thought cruise air had control of mother nature? You mean they're not in charge of closing airports either? ;-)

OP: "Does this seem a correct response?"

Yes. They only thing that will be leaving Tampa on Sept 10 is submarines. What exactly do you expect Princess Air to do to solve the situation?

  4. Bonus points if you know if the choice air tickets:

    1. Do not allow seat selection,
    2. Only allow seat selection at checkin, or
    3. Require a fee to select exit row.

Must provide proof via something from choice air, not via anecdote.

"Select seats". With all the airlines, it is a seat request only. You may not end up in those seats even if you 'select' them. Low probability but it can happen. What's your plan "B"?

  5. For Port Everglades, along with MIA and FLL, check PBI (West Palm Beach International).

I'm the nervous type, like lots of slop in the schedule for my own peace of mind. I go the day before. Coming back, I tend to book flights later in the day but the same day. Overnighting would be more than I'd feel is necessary. Going for early disembarkation and rushing to the airport would make me a wreck. Other folks are sanguine.

Different strokes. I do what's best for me. A road warrior type would think I waste a lot of time and thus not "best". (Give me a two hour connection instead of a one hour connection any time.)

  6. Anyone know how reliable I can count on the airline not cancelling the flight this far out(300+ days)?
No. Even someone working for the airline couldn't tell you that.

I know from experience that United doesn't mind changing the schedule up to 60-90 days before the flight. After that, things are fairly stable barring an last minute equipment swap. Living at a UA hub colors my perceptions - an outstation might be more stable.

You pays your money, you takes your chances. Check your flights weekly. Fri evening into Sat is when UA messes with, er, enhances the schedule/equipment. I tend to check weekly after Fri/Sat for changes.

(You didn't mention the airline. It would be a rash assumption that DL/AA/WN/F9/AS/etc are the same as UA. More specifics would help - someone with experience with *your* airline from *your* city pair could chime in. However "the plural of anecdote is not data". Our experience will not mean the airline won't do something. For example, my understanding is the DL and AS are in a bit of a battle over Seattle, so things may be more volatile there.)

  7. Just because someone else could upgrade their Princes Air tickets means nothing as far as if you can upgrade your Princes Air tickets. I believe Princess Air can sell both bulk and non-bulk tickets.

I think you'll need to call Princess to find out about your specific ticket. It may be possible that if Princess hasn't actually issued the ticket that they can change things. Only one way to find out for sure.

  8. Economy on UA has window assigned to group 3, middle to group 4, and aisle is group 5. BE is supposed to get put in group 5, at least until UA re-jiggers the boarding order.

Groups 1 and 2 are frequent flyers with various status, first/business, certain credit card holders, or folks that have purchased "premier access". It can happen that half the plane has priority boarding.

I do wonder how UA will handle pre-boarders on BE fares. Perhaps they'll program the BP scanner to give a raspberry when it sees a BE ticket, and the gate agent will make them stand to the side. Should be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

  9. ... US carriers are not anything like foreign carriers. Even on BA ffrom LHR- -AMS you get a full breakfast with champagne on a 45 minute flight and treated well.

US carriers are nothing but flying busses in all classes of service and our airports pale in comparison to Asia and Europe...

Apparently this is a surprise to you. If so, there are probably other folks out there that think they'll get a Ethiad/Cathy/etc premium experience on one of the 3 legacy USA airlines. They won't. So this thread is doing a service from the standpoint of correctly setting folks expectations.

To be fair, the US3 seem to be trying to improve their respective front-cabin experience somewhat. But I don't think they're going to try to compete with the Middle East/Asia Pacific airlines. Heck, UA is getting rid of their international first class cabins - no need to worry about ugly comparisons between UA first class and Etihads' Residence. Instead, they came up with "Basic economy"

  10. ...Air Canada claims that Rouge is a low cost airline but when comparing flight costs between them and other carriers, you'll generally not see much (if any saving)...
Gotta love the airlines. When they say "low cost" they mean lower cost for them to operate compared to traditional (non-Rouge). They are not talking about the cost to you - but they're happy to let you think that 'low cost' and 'low fare' are the same thing.
  11. I want a Residence experience on a Saga budget. What's wrong with these airlines not giving me what I want? ;) But Saga is still much better than the 3-4-3 economy on a UA 777, plus or no plus.

Re Choice Air: "I called American Airlines - she said she can't upgrade us because our tickets are bulk priced."

An example where Choice Air is not selling you the same ticket you can get from the airline website. How do you know which kind you're getting? Caveat Emptor.

  12. ...I think the industry overlooks the millions of people who hate flying, but do have money, do have time and would like to see their grandchildren...
If I remember my history, they used to have ocean liners before airplanes. The jet made ships-as-transport economically non-viable. I suspect the cruise lines remember similarly and are not inclined to repeat history.
  13. I believe the speculation is they will only be offered on routes matching Allegiant, Spirit and Frontier and will match their fare on said route.
I've read speculation that these will appear on all routes. If the current low fare in December is, say, $129, come January, that low fare will still be $129, it's just now it will have the E- restrictions. For $10-$20 more, you'll be able to get a ticket with the same fare rules (e.g. allows seat selection) as was available in December. A nice stealth price increase - pay more to get the same thing. The folks United cares about (high value flyers) will avoid E- like the plague, so no harm there. The folks that shop for the cheapest fare well, why would United care if they screwed themselves buying these?

My $0.02 - United will start offering these on routes it competes with the low-cost carriers. Then United will notice that it actually increases profits on these routes, and E- will spread to all routes.

OTOH, my dog ate my crystal ball, so I could be wrong. We'll have to wait for January.

It'll be fun if any of the cruise air departments starts handing these turkeys out (I've no idea if United will allow or forbid it). Given the opacity of cruise air, folks won't know until they get to the airport. I see future thread material: "United wouldn't let me take my carryon - they made me check it and pay for the privilege. Everyone else got on the plane before me. I couldn't sit next to my wife. I had to sit in a middle back by the toilet. I'll never fly United again. But I saved a bunch with cruise air."

  14. ...This type of info should be made known to cruise folks so that they don't go into this blind sided...
I believe Medicare documents what they cover. My health insurance documents what it covers, the British health care documents what it covers, etc, etc.

I would argue that it *is* made known to cruise folks. And to anyone else that cares. Just not in a pre-digested form easy for consumption by our Tweet-additcted society. The world would be so much nicer without the fine print.
