  1. I'm retired Army, and had four years in the Marine Corp and also of Scots descent so I wear my Combat Infantry Badge, Jump Wings and USMC Jump wings (all minature) on my Prince Charles Jacket with my kilt. No min medals or full size, as they would look strange with a kilt, but I served 2 tours in Vietnam and I'm proud of my service and wish I could wear my dress blues and jump boots, but I'm old and fat so I would not do justice to the uniform.

    Semper Fi and Airborne!

Thank you for your service to our country and WELCOME HOME!!

  2. So, I'm completely new to cruising, currently working on booking our first cruise for my R&R in Sept, (In AFG at the moment) and would love to find a good TA or PVP like you guys are mentioning. If anyone wants to send me a good site or a name to ask for at Carnival, my email is th0r0ngil @ hotmail . com

Thank you for your service to our country!

  3. Thanks for your reply! I had the same thought about the safety of parking on base rather than at the port. I will definitely check out the Ederle Inn.

Please post again to let me know how you make out. If you want to email directly, it's: mountainlakesdrive@gmail.com I have info here for U.S. military lodging around the world, and I also have information about lodging facilities that are operated for military members in countries other than the US, but where US military and their families are allowed to stay even if our military member is not on duty when he or she checks in.

  4. Hi All--

We're currently stationed in Belgium (husband is US military) and will be sailing out of Venice at the end of October. Looking at airfare for our family of 5 is making me consider driving instead. I'm thinking about driving to Vicenza or Aviano the day before departure (we have visited Venice before, so don't plan to tour there on this trip). If anyone is currently stationed there, or has been stationed there recently, or has done what I'm considering, I'd appreciate your insight into several questions...

Might there be lodging available at a reasonable cost?

Is there long-term (9 days) parking availble?

What about transportation options into Venice?

Of course it would probably just be simpler to drive right to Venice and park at the port, but I want to consider all our options, and of course try to save some euros! Thanks for any input you might be able to provide!

The U.S. military lodging facility at Vicenza is called The Ederle Inn. The email address there is: ederleinn@setaf.mil

If you'd like the telephone and/or fax numbers, just post again, and I'll get them.

It's been years since I've been there, but I remember the lodging facility there as wonderful. I'm sure they would allow you to park your car for nine days at the inn, and if they're pressed for parking spaces, ask for either the Rec Center or MWR; one or the other will come up with a suggestion for you to park your car free of charge. I'm sorry, but I don't know about the transportation options into Venice, but again, the reservations manager or the front desk manager would most probably be able to answer your questions, and if not, try MWR. Your car would be safer on the base than if you parked at the port, and it's entirely possible the cost of your transportation into Venice would make leaving your car on the base the wisest choice (you don't want to return to a car that has been vandalized).

Hope this info helps, post again if it doesn't, and please thank your husband for his service to our country!!!

  5. Very interesting article here...

Struggling to fill ships, cruise lines offer deals in Europe

    http://travel.usatoday.com/cruises/post/2011/04/europe-cruise-bookings-sales-weak-deal-promotion-royal-caribbean/167430/1

"The cruise lines are going into panic mode," says industry watcher Mike Driscoll, editor of Cruise Week. "They have moved all this hardware over there, and they need to fill the beds."

Seems like the North Americans are saying the same as us.

Yes great deals, but look at the air fares.

According to the article the cruise lines have dropped the fares as much as they can, and now to fill the ships, they are offering discounted air fares to get folk over there.

Wish they could offer cheap fares from downunder.

    Interesting, very interesting.....Thanks for sharing!

  6. I just found this board. I have been on two cruises in the past that were a salute to Veterans. Both were a great hit and had a great turnout. There is another one scheduled for May 2012 going to Alaska.:D

You can contact me for more info at the email below if you are interested

The Ivy Leaves patch I see: Would that be the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division? If so, thank you for your service! Will check out the cruise you mentioned, but I'm on CC primarily looking for information on the Carnival Spirit's repositioning cruises from Vancouver to Sydney in September 2012.

  7. I have all of my clothes in my spare bedroom sorted by outfit. I also love shoes, so it is very hard for me to downsize that portion of my wardrobe. I usually end up bringing 2 flip flops (bronze and black), 3 sandals (brown, black, white), and 2 wedges (black and white).

These are just the outfits I've put together so far (no pics, sorry). We are going to be traveling for 10 days total including our 7-day cruise, so I have a few more outfits to pick out.

Black sateen cuffed shorts + silk sleeveless multi-color U-neck top + black wedges (or purple/black sequin sleeveless top)

White sateen cuffed shorts + red one-shoulder top + white wedges (or yellow lace tank)

Dark rinse denim shorts (dressier) + fuschia sleeveless top + black wedges (or draped teal sleeveless top)

Fuschia ruffle tiered skirt + strapless black top + black wedges or sandals

Purple twirly-style skirt + lilac tank + black or silver sandals

Blue twirly-style skirt + white lace tank + white sandals

Sounds like a great cruise vacation wardrobe! And do I gather you live in "Greenbrier Land" where you can shop the discount shoe racks at Yarid's and the "closeout store from the Greenbrier" in White Sulphur Springs?!

Once I scored bargains at Yarid's, it became more of a challenge to shop for shoes on ebay!!!
