I'll say without hesitation that what you were told is absolute bull puckey.  What power consumption would they turn down?  Lights?  Ever walked around the ship late at night?  All lights on.  Galley and laundry?  Well, I suppose that is correct, but you are talking about 1%, at most of the power needed to propel the ship is being used by the galley and laundry.  Total hotel load is in the range of 8-10Mw, while propulsion can gulp up to 60Mw, and most of that hotel load is AC (which contrary to common belief on CC, they do not turn the AC down at night).

While I can't comment on Harmony, I remember a post on Captain Albert of Holland America Line, stating that on sea days they would drop speed just before 5am as hotel operations picked up, otherwise they'd have to bring an extra engine online, so it made more sense to sail faster overnight. We're not talking as significant changes of speed as 18 to 24 kts like this instance of Harmony, but certainly is a thing...

  2. The Marine Traffic route forecast is just that, a forecast...Marine Traffic's algorithm generates a route based on other traffic making similar journeys in the past. I.e. the forecast has zero relation to the route Oasis has planned and has no knowledge of planned routes. It *may* take that route, but there's every chance it'll take the more direct approach.

  3. Somewhere in my head I thought a team of professionals would be boarding Oasis in FLL today with some good cameras and sound equipment and vision mixers. And they'd use the VOOM on board to live stream a proper production. You know, given the magnitute of the event.

Maybe a link to the helicopter? but to be fair that would be pushing it.

Instead we got someone holding a phone the wrong way round in a small boat so far away from the ships that the phone camera could barely make them out. And sound that you couldn't hear from the wind. and a stream that kept cutting out because of there being no signal.

    Poor show Royal.

I'd be embarrassed if this was the live stream of my local churches nativity play, let alone one of the biggest events in the recent history of a multi billion dollar company.

  4. Be very careful with the inbuilt wifi calling app on the iPhone when abroad.

I know in the UK, my provider EE told me that wifi calling still goes through them - it just uses wifi rather than 2G/3G/4G to make the connection with the call. So it's still chargeable like a normal call.

When I'm at home, that's not an issue - because my calls are free. But abroad that would soon rack up a huge bill.

You'd be better using something like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or Facetime to make Audio calls - which are nothing to do with your phone provider.

  5. If you take a cab they will take you right to where you need to go.

It's almost underground where you go - not on the hotel on top!

Where are you staying in Vancouver? Maybe you don't even need a cab - although if you know where Canada Place is you'll be able to make that judgement call.

The American clearance is done in Vancouver so check in for us took a while because we were UK citizens entering America again. If you are American you'll probably get through quicker.

  6. We were on her this week last year and when we arrived back in Port Everglades she reversed in for new life rafts to be installed and a coastguard inspection.

I see she is stern in this week which would suggest she is maybe receiving the same a year on. As this is different to normal maybe it has taken longer to get provisions on board, or the coastguard inspection (if there was one) delayed things.

  7. Hello

We are travelling on the Oasis of the Seas in a few weeks, leaving from Terminal 18, Port Everglades.

I naively misjudged the distance between Miami and Fort Lauderdale and booked us into stay on Miami South Beach (the Anglers hotel)

A bit of research has led me to discover this would be around $100 in a taxi. I don't mind paying this if this is the only the preferable option, but I just wondered if anyone else had any tips on doing this journey?

And it is it advisable to book a private pickup or can we rely on the hotel to book us a taxi?

    Many thanks

    David
