  1. I did this in 2014 and it was great. I stayed at the Sheraton and found the hotel to be worth it in terms of being able to walk right out your door and be on the trails. The trails are very easy to navigate with the maps that the hotel provides. The rooms at the hotel are just good, not great. I found the food at the restaurants to be quite good, especially if you like black pudding. But the convenience is amazing. I found myself wanting to do more than 1 outing to the falls per day - to shower, eat, change camera lenses, etc. I don't think it would have been really possible if I wasn't staying at the Sheraton.

I didn't bother with the Brazil side, the visa seemed like a bit of a hassle, and after lots of online research the consensus seemed to be that the Brazilian side was a nice addition, but far from a necessity.

I would add that it doesn't take very long to see the falls and walk all of the trails. You could be very happy with just 2 full days there. More is always nice, but if cost is the issue and it was me, I'd stay one less day at the Sheraton rather than one more day at a hotel in time. Of course, that's just my two cents.

eta: I did this in late December and had no issues with the weather. It was hot and humid, but c'est la vie. It may have more bothersome if I didn't have the ability to go in and out of the hotel at my leisure.

I also enjoyed the spa at the hotel.

  2. I really enjoyed the cemetery, it's pretty cool.

The Park Hyatt is in Recoleta has an awesome courtyard garden with some bars and restaurants around it - a really great place to relax, have a drink, and read a book. They also have a nice spa. I'm not sure what the schedule is, but I did have Christmas dinner there one year. It was great. There's also a cigar bar there if that's your thing.

There's also a great gelato place in Recoleta called Arkakao - worth a stop.

The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes is great and the area immediately around it is very cool - it's also free if I remember correctly.

I would definitely check and see if there any walking tours available - the city has a ton of history and it makes for a pretty fun day.

If you're up for going to Palermo, The Miravida Soho Hotel and Wine Bar is a great place - I don't know if they're doing any wine tastings on that day, but if they are, I recommend it.

If you can get a reservation at Las Pizzaraz in Palermo it's a pretty amazing farm to table type restaurant.

Of course, catching a tango show is always a good idea.

  3. Just curious to see if any other solo cruisers were married.

    ...

I'm headed out in my first solo cruise this week and have received a lot of negative feedback about how it's not appropriate/it's weird to cruise alone.

I'm single and am doing a cruise solo for NYE. I did one a few years back and it was great. I always do a lot of other traveling solo - a few people have thought it was odd, but I can't imagine why I would care.

I love meeting other people who travel solo, whether they're single, married, gay, straight, same age, or whatever, because 90% of time you'll have an instant rapport based on some shared experiences and interests.

They're usually fun, outgoing, self reliant, and positive. My kind of peeps :)

  4. Going on this cruise again, a great set of Islands and just 1-sea day.

    Anyone else going?

I do have a question for solo's. When on a excursion what do you do with your wallet and other personal stuff? Especially at a beach / snorkeling?

    Thanks!

    Dave

    I wear these sometimes: http://www.amazon.com/Columbia-Silver-Ridge-Cargo-Fossil/dp/B0058YR2KY/ref=sr_1_1?&s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1439232956&sr=1-1&keywords=Columbia+Men's+Silver+Ridge+Cargo+Short

They have an inner lining like swim trunks, dry out super fast, and have one pocket that zippers, plus some others that are velcro. Not exactly traditional, but on the plus side you can also just use them whenever you'd wear shorts.

  5. I did the NCL Epic for NYE 3 years ago and had a great time (in a studio, same as this time). I've heard a lot of good things about the Getaway and think this will be another winner! I've posted on the roll call - last time I was able to find a couple of people on the board on the same cruise and we hung out the whole time, it was great.
