If I had to choose just one port for whales, it would be Icy Strait.  We’ve done many in Juneau as well but ISP is special when it comes to whales.  We used independent operators the three times we’ve been to ISP.
 

As already mentioned, the Kenai Fjord cruises are fabulous when in Seward.  There are two tour operators, Major Marine and the other previously mentioned.  

We just got off on 12/23.  I didn’t notice any by the poker machines.  

To the OP, thank you for sharing your experience.  We’ve been to Renaissance Island many times and hope to do it again. 

the ship excursion to the mountain is scenic and easy for most levels of mobility.  
 

In 2015, we took a non-ship bus excursion up the mountain that mirrored the ship excursion.  There were more than a dozen of us from our meet and mingle thread who went on this excursion.  Our bus wouldn’t start once we were ready to leave the top of the mountain.  😡. They had to drive another bus up the mountain to return us to port.  We had 15 minutes to spare before “all aboard” time.  Never again.  The Norwegian’s are a lovely people but our bus driver was way too laid back.  We were all freaking out on top of the mountain especially when the clouds rolled in way below us.

I had no issues with the helicopter landing on a glacier.  Quite smooth. 

I had to cancel a tour from Venice with City Wonders.  They were great to work with.  They’re getting my business for a Rome tour.  

I’m frankly surprised this didn’t happen sooner.  If they were smart they would have incorporated this change with the five drinks per day.

Honestly less worried about the ship than I am the ports, sights and organization of it all. 

RCL doesn’t have access to Glacier Bay.  Other theme type things Princess does that Royal doesn’t:

- Cruise Director staff dress as lumberjacks

- Puppies in the Piazza one day

- Iditarod champ onboard one day

- park rangers onboard on Glacier Bay day

- Alaska naturalist onboard throughout the cruise

Only you can decide the best fit for you and your family.  Radiance is a great ship for Alaska.  I’ve been on six RCL Alaska cruises and one on Princess.  I was very impressed with the Princess theming and GB.  

We used Rome in Limo when Carmine was driving for them.  He now has his own company viaseeamalficoast.com

I highly recommend Carmine.  He will get you the best service at Fattoria La Tagliata for a wonderful lunch.  They have gorgeous scenery atop a hill.

Sorry to hijack this thread folks!

I’ll just add that our preferred stateroom on RCL is a Jr. Suite and that we are more than pleased with the mini suites on Princess.  The layout is entirely different but still functional.  

Thanks for posting.  The article had a link to her YouTube channel, which I was unaware of so that was helpful too.  She’s such a treasure.  

I feel so bad for the folks who flew into FLL early for this cruise.  Bummer. 
 

My daughter and I were supposed to be on this cruise.  Then she finds out that she must cancel since she works in a hospital and can’t risk quarantine.   Now I’m glad we canceled last week or we would have flown to FLL today and then found out, like a lot of the other folks.  

Equinox is a wonderful ship.  Her staff seems generally happy and that reflects upon their service.  

Another vote for Oceano.  It’s lovely there at night.

Marmalade is still our first choice for OSJ, but no view. 

For sunset views, we go to Oceano.  If we remain in OSJ, then we choose Marmalade. 

We've been to both restaurants multiple times.

I second this.  Definitely upgrade to the Tundra Wilderness Tour.

As to beginning in Anchorage vs. Fairbanks, I've been to Alaska six times and haven't been tempted to see Fairbanks yet. JMO.

How far is it from port to the Renaissance? Is it an easy walk or do we need to take a cab or bus?

It's an easy walk. Once you pass the fenced area of the cruise terminal, turn right and its down the street. If it's 10 minutes, it really doesn't feel like that long.

IMO, their adult beach is MUCH nicer than Eagle Beach.
