The fact that people are defending that stuff may be the most Cruise Critic thing ever.

You could also argue the fact that people felt so triggered by a little bit of questionable art that they felt the need to start an entire thread about it may be the “‘most Cruise Critic thing ever.”

  2. Lol. We just got off the Dawn a couple weeks ago. Ate at the MDR once and noticed the art. We discussed it, questioned it, but didn’t think anything else of it. And now there’s an internet thread about it — love it.

Whether you love it, hate it ... I just think all opinions are valid. That’s art. I just love the fact that it was noticed and that it’s being discussed. I think is a nice diversion from the usual banter here. 🙂

Anyone can use the sauna & steam room - you trade your key card for a towel & robe. I was last on the Sun June 2018 (and three times prior to that) - as far as I know, that hasn't changed since.

Thanks, that's what I was hoping!

  4. Just wondering how the spa works on the Sun?  I know it doesn't have the thermal spa area nor do they sell passes like on the other ships, but looks like there are saunas and/or steam rooms in the vicinity.  Are those just for folks who have scheduled treatments or can any passengers use those?

We were on the Sun a few years ago (prior to the most recent upgrades) but didn't use the spa.  Thanks!

I had to do this last fall on the Gem.  YES--it was a long line..that snaked through Le Bistro. We were called by deck #s..it did go fairly fast..but I felt bad for those who had independent excursions booked and who did not know about the possible delay.

I ONLY needed key card and passport...have no idea about the wording re: birth certificate...I assume NCL is having one of their usual communication problems!!!

Good thing I've been following this thread ... I had a 10:00 a.m. excursion booked for 5/22 that I just rescheduled.  Silly me ... I thought an 8:00 a.m. arrival time meant you could, like, actually start heading to shore at 8:00 a.m.

So we need to show both a passport and a Birth Certificate?  That is a bit crazy unless I am reading that incorrectly.

I was wondering the same thing!

Edit:  Looks to me like Passport should suffice.  Per NCL's website:

For Cruises Leaving From a U.S. Port to the Caribbean, Bahamas & Florida, Bermuda, Alaska, Mexican Riviera, Canada & New England, Pacific Coastal

    You’re required to carry:

    A Valid Passport

    OR

Proof of Citizenship (see below) AND Government-issued photo ID

(Baptismal paper, hospital certificates of birth, and Puerto Rico birth certificates issued prior to 7/1/10 are not acceptable.)

    • State certified U.S. birth certificate
    • Original certificate of U.S. naturalization
    • Original certificate of U.S. citizenship
    • U.S. Consular report of your birth abroad
  7. Whether or not it's worth it is going to be totally subjective depending on the person.  We usually try to get an inside cabin near the spa.  Having access to the spa helps make up for some of the lost room/conveniences of having the inside cabin.  We don't have use the pools or baths that much.  But you get use of the showers, a roomy place to groom yourself, a place to sit and look out the window with a cup of tea, etc.  Plus, sometimes we just like a quiet place to get away.  Sometimes on cruises it's hard to find a quiet place during the day.

So, for us, as a supplement to having an inside cabin it's really worth it.

  8. We were on this exact same cruise (5/26 - 6/3 Alaska northbound on the Sun) and did not experience any problems with smelling smoke in any of the public areas except in the casino obviously. Nor can I recall any perfume issues. And we are both highly sensitive to smells.

We had a wonderful time on this cruise. The captain was able to maneuver the ship close to the glaciers. The weather was great considering it was Alaska. And we loved the Sun. Our favorite NCL ship so far.

  9. Is converting the Sun's observation lounge to suites a sure thing? Or is this just being speculated?

We first sailed NCL on the Spirit a few years ago. Our favorite memories of that ship was our time spent in the Galaxy of the Stars lounge which was equivalent to the Observation lounge on the Sun. Then, the next year we sailed the Dawn and learned that its similar lounge had been converted to suites. This really detracted from our experience. We found the Dawn to be crowded and lacking in public areas and quiet spaces to enjoy a book or see the sights.

We are looking forward to our cruise on the Sun next month mainly because of its Observation Lounge. We like quiet places to sit and watch the world go by. We enjoy cruising. But if NCL continues to take these spaces away from its regular guests we will be finding another cruise line.
