  1. I read in some article about what is and is not included on a Seabourn ship.  The article said  one did not pay  gratuities on spa treatments.

I know I did ask on our Alaskan cruise in September of 2019 and was told the gratuities were not included so I included one every time I had a treatment.  Which is correct?  I am sailing from Lisbon to Barcelona on the Odyssey April, 8. The earlier

years on Seabourn I know they were included but maybe times have changed the policy.

  2. I am uncertain as to what day time clothes to take on the 14 day Alaskan cruise.  We are also doing the pre- cruise in Denali.  I am referring to clothes for excursions, etc. My travel agent did not mention a Seabourn jacket.  Do we need waterproof pants or waterproof hiking boots?  Our trip is for early September.  Also some time ago someone suggested booking your own excursions that those provided by Seabourn were not that good.  Does anyone have a suggestion for private or small group tours?

  3. The cruise goes from Seward to Anchorage—14 days—glaciers and fjords.  The last Seabourn Cruise was a few years back—32 days from Bali ending in New Zealand.  It was over the Christmas holidays and New Years so everything was fairly formal.  We are doing the pre-cruise in Denali National Park so I was wondering if the attire might not be as formal to avoid taking some that would not be necessary.

  4. We are on the Sojourn in August/September.  Is the dress code more relaxed than on the other Seabourn cruises?  I am planning to wear cocktail dresses on the formal nights and my husband a tux.  Would we be over dressed?

  5. We have been on two Seabourn cruises which are the only two cruises we have ever been on; one was only for 7 days and one for 32 days. We had to cancel one for 28 days because 10 days before we were to leave I stepped off a curb and broke my ankle.

The point of this is to say we are not experienced cruisers but have had two excellent stewardesses. Luck, maybe, I think not. The first one was an old hand and she knew we were the "fish out of water" no pun intended. She knew we were afraid of making some shipboard faux pas. We did not know any of the "rules of Seabourn " such as what to ask for such as the little extras all the old Seabourners or even other luxury ship travelers knew. She schooled us in "Seabournese" and a few of the waiters, and bar men probably could see that first day or so we were new and they went out of their way to make sure we felt like long time sailors. She could have taken total advantage of us because we didn't know what to expect but she did her job like the professional she is.

Before the 32 day cruise , I had found this board so from you people I learned at least a high school diploma or maybe a BS degree--probably the later--taken in the least complimentary way of some people.

Our stewardess on this cruise was brand new this was only her second cruise--same as ours. But she was very willing to learn.

She wanted to know everything we needed.

We did have to leave her notes but they were promptly followed. I think part of that might have been language--we have a deep southern accent and she had a very pronounced Slavic accent. She did so many sweet, little extra things and especially since this involved Christmas. I think it was because she knew that we would be patient if she made a slip up, we would remind her with a note, we would not act as if she had deliberately done it to p__s off.

We were not superior acting. After all, this is not Downton Abby! There are no butlers and ladies maids!

I know this has been long and some of you have not made it through but I think many times the relationship you establish with your stewardess on the first day will set the tone for the trip.

And on that first day it has to be utter chaos. All I can relate to is the first day of school--that goodness that is a memory of almost 20 yrs. ago!

These young men and women do this to make the most to help their families back home. I say give them a break whenever you can. Put yourselves in their shoes for a while. I think most of them give their best effort and those that don't won't last long.

  6. I reiterate my message as some of you seem to be able to accept Charleston and possibly South Carolina as not totally bigoted and racist but cannot get past the other "whoopee cushion states".

All of the people in the other states do not represent or support what is sometimes unfortunately used by the media as fodder to make the entire state appear as a bunch of bigoted rednecks.

I agree Roy Moore( Supreme Court of Alabama) does make us look like the most ignorant, right wing, knee jerk , conservative "Christians" if you only "judge" the entire state by what one idiot spouts off! But I assure you he is despised by every person that I know and many I don't "know". But he was re-elected so I guess there are enough people that think his "Christian" views are the correct Biblical views.

I threatened to move out of the state when he was re-elected but then if you look hard enough at other places it would be difficult to find the perfect utopia of no prejudices concerning sexual orientation, race, etc. Many of the so called "liberal" states still have deep pockets of bias or at least some of their politicians represent that view. No place is devoid of personal prejudices, meanness, or unjust acts toward their fellow man. We might as well try to start where we are with our own hearts and consciences and work toward looking for more tolerance, understanding, and acceptance of diversity. And that could start by not labeling any state( which would represent all of its people) as a "whoopee cushion state". BTW our governor was one of the first to order the Confederate Battle flag removed from the Capitol. But then I didn't vote for him--he was too conservative but he isn't the worst!

Enuff ! I just don't like total condemnation of a group by anyone who feels morally superior when they "ain't been there or done that". And they certainly don't know everyone who lives in the area they are judging!

  7. That is a little unfair to judge entire states because of dumb legislation and legislators.

Many, many in my state definitely do not agree with the policy against gay marriage or want to fly the Confederate Battle flag. In my church and community, there are lots of happily married gays and unmarried partners who seem to love and are loved by their neighbors.

I feel certain that regardless of sexual orientation, race, ethic or religious beliefs anyone would be welcomed by the vast majority of my acquaintances .

I think the media, in a large number of instances, portrays us in a much more bigoted and hateful light than is often times deserved.

    Just sayin'

  8. The Odyssey is not scheduled to leave Bali until 11:00pm on Dec.5th.

I have a tour scheduled that does not end until around 5:30 or 6:00 pm. I had just assumed that would be sufficient time to check in before we sailed.

But now I am concerned about missing the Safety Drill. Does anyone know what time these are usually conducted? What is the absolute latest we can board the ship? I don't want to run afoul of regulations and not be able to board and miss our cruise!

It never crossed my mind with the sailing time so late that we should be already on board any earlier. What is your advice? Do I need to cut my tour time short?

    Thanks!

  9. I am seeking advice from anyone who has ever arranged their own off ship tour during the time that the ship is cruising around the Fiordland National Park until it reaches Halfmoon Bay. Is this possible or do you have to do one of the ship's excursions? Is it so difficult that it would not even be worth trying to make my own arrangements? I don't have a clue yet what the cost would be from Seabourn but I was hoping I could possibly arrange it more reasonably on my own. If someone could give me some idea as to whether I should attempt this or if it would be more trouble than it would cost just to go ahead with Seabourn. Thanks for your much needed input!

  10. We had to cancel our cruise after the final payments and after the documents had been sent. We will re-coup our losses because we always get travel insurance but what about the OBC? We were to get $ 400 for referring a first time cruiser. We have booked another cruise but not until Dec. 2014. Will be we still be entitled to carry this OBC forward to this cruise? Our TA doesn't seem to know which I guess is understandable since it is a Seabourn thing.

Who should I email at Seabourn to ask?

    Thanks!

  11. We had to book an A1 guarantee last January. Our travel agent has not gotten any info. on a room assignment. The first part(Venice to Athens) of the cruise still says call about availability but I have tried to do a dummy booking on the last 12 days and it shows one A1 suite left.

I have no idea what this means. We sail from Venice on the Spirit Oct. 15th. What happens if there is still no room for us on that leg of the cruise? When do they let us know that we can't be on that part of the trip? Or does guarantee mean that they have to find us a place?

We have never had to book without a specific room before so I don't exactly understand how an oversold cruise works. I'm OK with whatever room but if there is not one for the first 14 days then I am not interested in only doing the part from Athens to Barcelona. We will arrive in Venice on Oct. 11th. Surely, they would not let us get to the ship and then tell us "there's no room in the inn"!

Anyone had an experience like this before? Am I worrying needlessly?

Some of you more experienced sailors give me reassurances and calm my frazzled nerves.
