Update: Still no charge on my folio. But, you can see past orders on the app. For a short time tonight that order showed a charge of 89 cents, .75 + .14, as you expected. Now it’s gone, app is wonky on land and sea!

What's interesting is the cocktail menu that PescadoAmarillo posted (#436) shows the Bushmills Irish Buck costing $7.50 ? Not sure how that adds up to $12.75

  2. We were also on this cruise. On Friday evening, we were enjoying a fine dinner at the Pinnacle Grill when a large party of diners came in and were seated at a large table in the back corner of the restaurant. It seemed to us there was a lot of over the top fussing and fawning by the wait staff. We had no idea the Royals were on board until reading about it here. That must of been who we were dining with (well, in the same restaurant).

  3. We also enjoyed the Salty Dog on the Crown back in February. We were able to share just one meal-no problem. Our waiter brought extra plates to split our choices. We had the grilled cheese and white tomato soup, the beets, and the burger. All very good and just the right amount of food for us. We'll be going again next month on the Emerald.

  4. I estimate that 'dealing with the MDR' can mean a few different things.

Dining in the MDR can be a longer affair -- a minimum of at least 1 hour, often well into 1 1/2-2 hours. It also requires dressing up a little(beyond casual wear).

When sailing a tropical itinerary, sometimes the DW doesn't feel like dealing with her hair - which can get a little frazzled after a day under the sun, on the beach and in the water. Sometimes, I simply don't feel like throwing on some pants, socks and shoes on a warm tropical evening. It's these evenings that we often find ourselves in the HC for a casual meal.

When attending the MDR(anytime), we choose to dine alone -- if immediately available. However, arriving at peak dining times, often being able to be seated with very little(or no) waiting times, we usually opt to dine at shared tables(as opposed to tables for two - which are about the same as shared table dining anyhow-- As the banks of (couples)tables are placed so close to eachother:rolleyes:, and they're usually served on similar timelines).

We also usually enjoy sharing tables with fellow passengers, as most often the table conversations may be pleasant and engaging. Being port-active cruisers, sometimes we are wiped out after intensive port days. On those days, we may not be in the mood for table-conversations with strangers, and may not want to appear rude as the silent/tired-looking ones at a talkative table.

Even on days when we aren't wiped out, after a long day in port, it's nice to be able to relax a little bit before heading off to dinner, but this can often lead to conflicts w/ scheduling to attend certain entertainment venues. Many times we've found ourselves skipping dessert, so that we could make a show/lounge act in time to grab a decent seat. Feeling rushed puts a damper on what ought to otherwise be a somewhat relaxing dining experience.

Wow, my exact thoughts on MDR dining. Skai put forth very good reasons for skipping ("not dealing with") the MDR. I think that night it was reason number four - too tired and not in the mood for a lengthy dinner and conversation. We usually eat at Anytime Dining 4-5 nights on a 7 day cruise with 1-2 nights at Crown Grill, Sabatini's, and now the Salty Dog.

  5. Getting a paper receipt is a very good idea to keep track of your own purchases and point out any mysterious charges that appear in your portfolio. The problem is that your receipts won't help show that you didn't order that mystery drink (unless it was at the same time of day). It seems from previous posters and was my experience that Princess has been removing these charges without question though. It's just an extra hassle to deal with.

  6. We just walked up to the Salty Dog at the Wheelhouse (no reservations) on our cruise on the Crown a couple of weeks ago. Neither of us were too hungry and just didn't want to deal with the MDR that evening so decided to check out the Salty Dog menu. It looked good so we asked the waiter if we could order just one dinner and share it - no problem.

We were seated in the alcove to the right of the door into the Wheelhouse from the main passageway. There are about a dozen tables in this area and that evening only two other couples. This was about 7 pm. A soft rock duet was playing and the music level was just right - easy conversation and good music.

We started out with the included "dipping sticks" which were thin tasty breadsticks with a beer/cheddar dipping sauce - very good. They threw in a salad (not on the menu) followed by some excellent truffle/garlic fries with a choice of (more) dipping sauces. For our three plate selections we went with the "Ernesto" burger - a very tall and very good burger - lots of flavor and filling. Also got the grilled cheese sandwich and white tomato soup. There were only a couple of 1" strips of grilled cheese sandwich but it was also very good. The soup tasted like a good tomato soup but was white. Very different. Our third plate was the salt roasted heirloom beets with a goat cheese fondue (yet another dipping sauce?). We decided on our shared dessert but can't remember what it was called but bourban was in the name. Excellent!

All in all, we really enjoyed the fare. That evening, it was just the right amount of food for us even with splitting of only one dinner. We had dinner at the Crown Grill earlier in the cruise and really enjoyed that as well. Is the Salty Dog worth the $19 cover charge? It's only $6 less than the CG. I think it was for us that night but if we were either very hungry or celebrating a special occasion, I would go with the CG or Sabatinni's. We will also go back to the SD on future cruises if its offered and try some of the other choices but will definitely get the "Ernesto" burger again.

To an earlier poster who was concerned about the lack of vegetarian options. There were at least 5 or 6 vegetarian choices on the menu.

  7. Hi.......new to princess. So, are they taking down folio numbers by hand or do they swipe your cabin key (like Carnival, Disney, etc)? Do you get paper receipts to keep track?

They don't swipe your card. My experience is that they either write down your folio # or remember it (when not too busy). When they bring your drink you sign a slip. Sometimes I got a copy but usually had to ask for one. In the MDR they would bring a different type of charge slip to sign with the wine or beer ordered but no price on it (I really check on this one later). The problem with this system is a charge mistakenly added to your folio by misentering numbers.

  8. Military Benefit for Veterans and Active/Retired Personnel

To thank the brave men and women of the American and Canadian militaries for their service, Princess Cruises® offers up to $250 free onboard spending money* for veterans as well as active, retired or disabled military personnel.

The Military Benefit is one of the reasons I choose to sail with Princess. I don't know if other cruise lines offer this benefit.

  9. I recently finished a cruise on the Crown. On disembarkation day I checked the final charges in my portfolio and just happened to notice a bar charge that I knew I did not have (it was from a bar that I never went to). Went down to passenger services hoping to prove a negative. The charge was for a scotch drink in Gatsby's at midnight. I assured the service rep that I don't drink scotch, have never been to Gatsby's, and was snoring away at midnight. No problem, charge removed.

I think what probably happened is the waiter/bartender took a glance at the cruise card, noted the portfolio number, then either misread the number or misentered it into the computer. If that was the case, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

I was told that there can be a charge from Gatsby's(or other bar) if you order a drink in the Princess Theater as that's the closest bar. This wasn't the case in my situation.

Anyway, check your portfolio charges for accuracy. I may not have noticed this charge if it had come from a bar I frequented and I've also noticed the waiters don't seem to hand out receipts unless you ask for one. It wasn't a big dollar amount but it could have been.

  10. A couple of weeks ago on the Star Princess, we looked into using the Sanctuary on Glacier Bay day. We were told it would cost $60 pp and that it included drinks (limited menu of mimosas, bloody Mary's, some coffee drinks, etc.) and special snacks and foods. We decided it wasn't worth it and just stayed out on top of the bridge. Looking up at the Sanctuary it didn't look like many others took up the offer either.

  11. A couple of weeks ago we rented a car from Juneau Car Rentals. We were at the next closest dock (not the A-J dock) so about 1/2 mile walk. The mini van we got ran a little rough but it was cheap enough at $70 incl. taxes. It was a quick and easy process and since no one would be there when we returned to just leave the keys in the car and leave it unlocked.

We went to the Alaskan Brewing Co., the Costco nearby where we got our picnic lunch for later. Visited the Shrine of St. Teresa, Eagle Beach where we had our lunch (several picnic tables) and saw a lot of eagles and salmon. Continued on to the end of the road, headed back and stopped at Mendenhall Glacier where we could spend more time exploring and hiking than the typical tour bus would allow. There was a Safeway near where the road to Mendenhall Glacier met up with the main road so we filled up there. Finished off with a stop in downtown for shopping before returning the van.

  12. We just got off a B2B on the Star. We thought she was in great shape and would definitely sail on her again. We went to Skywalkers several times during the cruises for the elite/platinum lounge and never noticed any odors or leaking windows. Not saying it wasn't an issue, just that we never noticed it.

  13. Sometimes, and I say sometimes, on the last night of a segment the duty free shop will sell duty free bottles of alcohol for carry out. It is supposed to be only for those passengers who are disembarking, but they don't always check. Just sayin ...

Hmmm, that's good to know. We're on a b2b to Alaska, booked as two separate cruises. How does bringing wine on board work? Can we bring two bottles each at the start of 1st leg or have to go with two at first leg and two on second leg (would have to try and find wine in Whittier)?

  14. Thanks to all for the replies. I'm sure we won't be the only ones doing a b2b on this cruise but I wasn't sure if the cruise staff was aware of the b2b'ers but it sounds like they are.

Another question my wife and I are having a mild disagreement about. Are we required to disembark in Whittier and then wait to re-embark when the ship starts boarding?

  15. We've booked a b2b to Alaska beginning and ending in Vancouver. We'll be changing cabins at the turnaround. How is the luggage handled (no pun intended)? Is it put it out the night before and it's moved to the new cabin the next day?

  16. I can't say for sure of course but I would guess that most people follow the rules. We take our one bottle of wine each and make no effort to hide it. On one of our last cruises I purchased a couple of (overpriced) 375ml bottles from Princess.

On our last cruise I bought a 375ml bottle of Absolut for $20 or so but that was still cheaper than bringing on 7 50ml bottles (at least from WA state).

  17. Thanks so much for confirming what others have reported, and explaining this in some detail. Can you tell me which window suite you were in? I am trying to figure out if it is more noticeable the further aft one is in the row of window suites.

We were in F311, second from the aft end of the WS's. I don't know how much of a difference it would make as far as the noise goes.
