I can't say for certain where Viking will dock in Warnemünde - it depends on the sailing - but if you follow this link it will tell you which berth the ship is due to tie up at, eg P1, P2 etc. This next link will bring up a map which, if you expand it, will show the berth numbers and the station which is marked with a little train symbol. As you can see, the station is very close, but the walk takes about 10 minutes by the time you have exited the secure area. Once at Rostock Hauptbahnhof (main station), you can either catch tram 5 or 6 (they stop a floor or two underneath the train station) or get a taxi to the town centre. The latter will drop you in the heart of the old town whereas the tram will necessitate a walk along level ground (Kröpeliner Strasse) from Neuer Markt to the Tourist Information Centre. And yes, you purchase train tickets at the station (unless the ship is also selling train tickets). I hope this helps.

    Jimgri,

Thank you so much. This is a great help.

  2. For those of you who decide not to make the arduous trip to Berlin, Warnemünde is a pretty seaside resort, but for the cost a €6 train ticket, Rostock is just 20 minutes away and awash with history. Trains run every 15 minutes or so and it's more than possible to combine Rostock with Warnemünde and still be back on the ship in time for dinner. My wife and I did a Baltic cruise with HAL last year and took quite a few photos of both Rostock and Warnemünde (they appear just after Copenhagen in the album) if you're interested.

    Jimgri,

I am traveling with my elderly parents and have a concern about going into Berlin with the LONG train ride and the tour being pretty demanding. Where does the ship dock on this day? We are definitely interested in doing the Rostock and Warnemünde trip. Do you purchase the train ticket at the station? These questions may seem a bit silly, but I am not a real seasoned traveler without planned tours and excursions.

  3. Wendy,

DH and I did this cruise last year. If you let me know your email address, I'd be happy to send my detailed itinerary.

Pam, I am looking at doing this cruise with my parents in June. Last minute, but would love to take a look at your itinerary. I prefer to do most of our booking on our own. I know it is late, and we may not get to do all we would like to, but going to give it a go!!!

  4. Thanks for the great review! We are taking this cruise 11/30/14 and can't wait. We did a Christmas Markets on the Danube, Nuremberg to Vienna with GCT in '07 and thoroughly enjoyed it. We can't wait to see what AMA has to offer! Sounds like is going to fantastic. We are from South Texas and are cattle producers and I know my DH will be thrilled to know the beef is good. He as issues eating chicken and fish to often….lol

  5. I have to say that we used GCT and they made our reservations for our first trip. From what I have been told, they have a contract with different airlines depending on pricing and the seats are usually in a lower class of economy, which is not a problem, but our problem was they had us booked to fly from Houston to Amsterdam on to Nuremburg. We had 1 hour to meet our connecting flight to Nuremburg! There was no way you could disembark, go through security and get to our next flight. Needless to say, we didn't make it. There were 4 of us traveling together, one with MS. They couldn't get us another flight for 13 hours!!!!!! Then the bad weather set in and it was another 3 hours before we left Amsterdam for Nuremburg. We got on our River Boat at 2:30 am! Not a good thing. I have since made all my own travel arrangements to accommodate us. I have paid the $100.00 transfer fee for convenience, is a bit costly, but now will just arrange my own transportation now that I am more comfortable. The GCT river cruises I have been on have been great. The cabins are a bit small, have a couch that converts into a bed at night time, you can call the room steward to come set it up if you want to nap in the daytime and they will happily come do this. It isn't a comfortable couch to sit and relax on, but we seldom sat in our room, we were in the lounge of the most part. My mom and I went on one and we met so many people that were wonderful and you just find yourselves sitting and visiting or playing games or just sharing a drink, be it coffee or wine. I hope you and your mom have as great a time as my mom and I did. Just as an added bonus, I never felt uncomfortable being there without my husband or dad. You are surrounded by fantastic people. As I am sure that on all river cruise lines you are. ENJOY

    !

  6. Anyone going on the Jewels of Europe-Budapest to Amsterdam in May? I am really keeping a positive outlook on this trip. I have read so many conflicting reviews. The more recent ones are looking better. When does Scenic let you know what ship you will be sailing???:)
