  1. Please people, spread the word that license plates / placas are not souvenirs, Some islands sell them, In Roatan if you buy one it was likely stolen, then creating huge hardship for the owner as it can take up to 6 months and a months pay to replace

  2. Just wait till you get there, once you see it you can decide, no one knows better than you if its to much of a burden , if you walk it great, if you choose a taxi ride up its only a couple dollars

  3. It makes me sad to se these types of posts, No matter how well cared for the animals "appear" for a short visit, they are captive, held prisoner. They are not domestic animals, they are not even native to the island, often with these types of things their parents are killed in the wild so the babies can be taken, why not visit a place these animals live naturally in the wild and do a jungle tour so see them living in their natural environment rather than captive?

  4. Tis extremely extremely rare for a ship to miss port at Mahogany Bay due to tropical storm, the VAST majority of times the port has been missed has been due to normal wind patterns affecting the southside. Even during times when Hurricanes are near they are usually north and the Southside is generally very calm, This is why during many TS times those with snorkel and dive excursions are often bussed from the popular north side resorts to areas on the south side

  5. Op shows Carnival ships, which means Mahogany Bay. That does increase a likelihood of cancelling if weather is heavy. But currently there are no tropical systems anywhere near or expected to be near Roatan in the next couple of weeks. .

Crewsweeper seems a bit confused on weather and cancellations, Most of the times when Carnival Ships miss port there are no tropical storm issues, as a matter of fact, during most tropical storms, the southside, where Mahogany Bay is located is the leeward side of the Island and very calm, Carnival misses port more often during normal weather patterns when the winds are strong trade winds coming from the south east

  6. OK, I am confused, you say you want authentic local food yet then mention about West Bay and West End, the two most touristy areas of the Island with very few options for authentic and while the places may have good food there is very little authentic with crewsweepers suggestions , Your going to be in Sandy Bay you should try Aminta's, it is next to the car wash in Sandy Bay or you could stop at the corner of the coast road in Flowers Bay and the road to west end for pastellitos, ballaedas, etc.. made fresh and open all day, eldons supermarkets also offer daily lunch specials and are always authentic

  7. Since both of the OP's upcoming cruises are on Carnival, the ship will be docked at Mahogany Bay.

Yes, BUT, where is the OP wanting to go on "The other side of the island" The island is roughly 50 miles long, Do they just want to get to the other side or get to a particular place

  8. Buddy said that's where I need to get to. Thanks, JT

You probably need to be a bit more specific, Both ports are on the South Side so do you just want to go someplace on the north side or a particular place, the island is pretty long, do you want to head away from crowds towards the East end or head to the very popular and very tourist West End or West Bay? Of course there is also Sandy Bay on the North with a few options for cruisers as well

  9. My husband was able to donate yesterday at the local Red Cross blood drive. They told him he had to be in the country for 24 hrs for it to count against him.

According the Red Cross there is nothing about 24 hours, the rules are simple , •Wait 12 months after returning from a trip to an area where malaria is found.... Sounds like the people working the drive did not know the rules and now who knows how many may be at risk or if someone with immune issues may get tainted blood and get sicker or worse.

  10.

Being that we meet up in a public place and go to a private island we will be okay, she assured me they have never had any problems.

You most likely will be fine but the reasoning is flawed. The recent murder of the NCL crewmember was in a very public place a few blocks from the ship dock on the main road of the main town on the island with people around as well as security cameras.

  11. The crime is real, it is scary, Most law abiding Islanders do not venture too much out at night due to the violent crime, Many are assaultd like the tourists and worst is even when caught they are out the next day because their family has friends. What happened here could happen anywhere, cruise sponsored or not, Difference is, most places have law enforcement that would look into it. Not Roatan, Tourist left, could not file report, people will b free soon

  12. If you can donate, be sure to do so before you leave.

Have not been able to Donate on 12 years as my travel takes me to places on the list. Too bad they cannot better test, I sure hope they do not just take peoples word for it that they cannot have Malaria or other disease

  13. if anyone makes a negative post about a place, company or experience and it is their first post, um, are you going to believe it? From the sounds of it, it sounds like you do. If that is the case keep believing everything on the internet.

The facts are I know this happened, I live on Roatan, I have friends that work at Mahogany Bay, I know the resort owner of the place on the Eastern End, I know the car rental people and who ultimately paid for the repairs, it was not the visitors, I know some were apprehended in this situation. Do I believe all that is on the internet? Of course not but I KNOW this terrible incident happened.

  14. I believe they're called sand fleas...not flies. At least I've never heard of anyone calling them flies.

At any rate, I've been on the beach in Roatan more than once and nobody I've been with had any problems.

I'm sure there's a bug repellant that would keep them away.

Actually they are called both BUT Flies is the correct term as they do fly, they have wings and can easily make it two or three stories up. Local Islanders call them flies, Local Honduras use the Spanish "moscas" which is Spanish for fly.

They can be terrible but most important is everyone's chemistry and reaction is different so just because person "A" had no trouble, that means nothing to person "B". Kind of like some people being chilly at night and some being warm. Reast assured however that if they bother you a little spritz of a deet based product will keep them at bay

  15. Funny,

I didn't get that "vibe" from your post following the inuendos aimed at the OP but whatever...

Actually it would seem there were plenty of innuendos, when someone replies to a post with things like

    anything that may have happened
as if it may not have happened?
the number one thing is AVOID the east side, and number 2, do NOT do it on your own.

I have seen this posted numerous times by the same person, Just one perspective

This person(s) has very limited posts here
As if that matters at all?

This person also made the same post on TripAdvisor....... they just created the account and made the long post............ seems like either no research or a completely scammer

Many people are member of both sites and BTW Tripadvisor OWNS Cruise Critic , can we blame someone for wanting to spread the news about problems?

    Again, if this happened

    Once again casting doubt

This just scratches the surface of the innuendos and criticisms in the post, if you do not see it then maybe time to re read

  16. This comes up frequently. There is night and day difference in the mainland as opposed to Roatan. We always feel extremely safe there.

    I live on Roatan,

There is a reason I have a couple dogs, both WILL bite, I have a full time armed watchman, I have security cameras and I have a glock 9mm on me and under my pillow at night.

"Feeling safe" has nothing at all to do with how safe one is or isn't, as a matter of fact it can be detrimental

  17. I guess what bothers me is , don't they test the blood no matter what before giving it away? What if people lie or forget? What if some crazy with aids or hep wants to spread his or her stuff and just lies?

  18. At the time when Coxen Holes dock was used with some regularity Carnivale would take advantage, especially when they had 2 ships in port. Hod the Dream not been able to Dock at Coxen Hole there is a good chnce it would have taken Mahogany Bay and the smaller ship missed the port. It ismore of an issue of Multiple ships rather than size of the ship,

  19. Seems as if the bigger ships have a problem docking at Mahagony Bay if it is windy where the smaller or average size ship dock there with no problem. :)

This is not at all accurate, All Carnival and sisters ships that go to Roatan have missed Mahogany Bay at one time or another, Even small ships get damaged when backing into a small dredge area in strong winds. DO NOT Believe if your on a smaller Carnival ship that you have any type of assurance of docking, it is all upon Mama Nature

  20. Some travelers get vaccinations for things like Hep a and Hep b typhiob and others, Some take anti malarials, This is really not something I would be asking on a public anonymous internet forum if i or my family should or shouldn't do, I would suggest talking things over with a medical professional knowledgable in travel medicine and or at least take some time and read what the CDC and Canada Health or other first world agencies have to say
