    Newbie for Norwegian Fjords- 2 wk Cruise on HAL

    Thank you all for your responses.

    We did book the Flam Train on our own with a later time than the ship excursion has for a couple of reasons. The itinerary for Flam for HAL states that this will require a tender, however on Cruise Mapper I see no other ships in port other than HAL, so I am puzzled as to why the itinerary lists a tender.

    I am planning on booking the Rodne cruise when in Stavanger.

     

    I do have one other question: I have always researched how many ships are in port using Cruise Mapper but is there a way to tell exactly where a ship will be berthed or what area it is berthed when in port (in advance)?

    Good morning,

    Huge bucket list booked for this year in August of these Fjords: 

    Trying to book excursions and day trips for this exciting trip: I have such a silly question that I am sure that experiences Norway visitors might be able to guide and direct me.

    I have a silly question of sort regarding the Norway Fjord cruise we have scheduled in August on HAL.
     
    I am in process of selecting shore excursions when we are in ports.  Looking at both cruise line and excursions and other independent ones.
    Example of first few days of itinerary;
     
    Aug 19th: Eidford, Norway. In port from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
    Aug 19th: "Scenic cruising of the Hardangerfjord"
     
    Aug 20th: Bergen, Norway
     
    Aug 21st: Flam Norway
    Aug 21st: "Scenic cruising Sognefjord"
     
     There is one more listing for Olso later on and then the same day "Scenic cruising Oslofjord"
     
    Here is the question related to the description of these days:
     
    Will we be sailing in/out of these ports on these Fjords to get to these port stops? I would not want to schedule an independent excursion doing the same thing if we sail in and out of these Fjords whilst getting to the port stop.
     
    When we are in Stavanger, I have found a small excursion boat that goes down the Lysefjord to see Pulpit Rock, but do we sail on this Fjord to get to Stavanger? If I did this would it be a duplication of scenery we have already viewed?
     
    While doing the "scenic cruising" this clearly might be before daylight or after dark? So do you miss the scenery?
     
    Any advice appreciated and thank you in advance for your time taken if you are able to share your knowledge.

    Viking Newbies Question Regarding Evening Attire-Ladies

    Good morning! I would like to first thank all of the cruisers that take the time to post and help other people on the Cruise Critic Board. I have been a member for many years and do not post frequently, but read frequently.

    I have one simple question regarding the ladies attire for the evening. We are veteran cruisers on many lines, not loyal to any one line, we shop by itinerary.

     

    Today is prep day (laying out all the clothes) prior to packing for the West Indies Transatlantic.

    Simple question for ladies dress, I will wear capri slacks on some evenings on other cruise lines. Will this be an appropriate attire for Viking evenings. 

    Quick and simple and thank you in advance.

    We are departing from Barcelona and have the extension booked prior so maybe Paella should be enjoyed in Barcelona rather than Valencia. ( or both!) I have been looking on Trip Advisor for ideas.

    In Valencia we took the shuttle bus provided free by Viking from the ship to Pont dels Serrans (a bridge leading into one of the gateways into the old town) and did our own exploration of the city starting there.

    That sounds like a great idea. I did not realize that Viking would run a shuttle in addition to the tour bus. This will be a fun learning experience for us. Thank you for your suggestion.

    Regarding Viking's included tours-question

    We are veteran cruisers with 20+ cruises behind us and not loyal to any one brand. This is our first time on 

    Viking. My question is :  For included tours that are tours of the city, particularly Valencia. Is it possible to offload from the tour and stay in town, then find our own transportation back to the ship. I really want to experience the Paella in Valencia and I could not find any other type of food tour to experience in the afternoon. So my next thought, since we are taking the included tour from 9-12 is to just find a great restaurant  to eat and then head back to the ship.  Recommendations regarding restaurants are also appreciated.

    Shore Excursions

    I have been reading all of your tips regarding booking shore excursions. We have been on many cruises but this is our first Viking Ocean Cruise. ( First Viking one period). I am gearing up for the opening of the booking excursions today.  I read about the ACH being the best option if you enter the information previously on MVJ. I have entered Credit Card information already into My Viking Journal, will this not auto populate to my credit card for a shore excursion? Thank you everyone for all of your time and effort in sharing experiences to help others.

    Kim,

     

    I believe if you book your own air, you are supposed to disembark by 10:00 AM. If you book your air through PG, then you can disembark later and have lunch on board.

     

    BTW, I graduated from McKinney High School. :)

     

    Thanks for the info.. wow McKinney High, are you still in the area? When did you graduate. We have a couple of friends who are lifelong McKinney people (they used to own a nursery/greenhouse ) here in McKinney. Small world as always. ;)

    I have read several different threads regarding disembarking.

     

    Is there a set time, I have read some had lunch prior to leaving. I am trying to arrange for our transportation to our hotel (we have booked on our own).
