Hi all.  First attempt at a live report; noticed that someone else is doing a report on the same cruise, which will likely be much more exciting than this, but wanted to share my first solo experience.  Have read a lot about cruising solo on these boards, and also have had many questions answered, so want to give back a little!

Following, I'm a week behind you cruising Oasis with a group I don't know but was invited to join, and first time in a solo cabin for the same reason (DH passed suddenly two years ago). Royal was great about letting me stack the credits I had, so it made this trip worthwhile. It'll be my second time on Oasis so I'm excited to see how she has fared in the last several years. Enjoy the trip!

  2. I emailed the resort this week and they told me to book through Resort for a Day. I think that is what I will do.

I called them and they said we had to book through resortforaday.com. The balance of $94 is paid at the resort upon arrival, but the full charge is $114. Interesting, I think that the deposit goes to resortforaday.com ($20) and then the resort is only paid the balance. That's why it seems a little pricey, but you cannot buy them direct at the desk according to the front desk person I spoke with.

  3. I am usually all-in on booking everything on my own but for cruises I won't do it without Air to Sea. We booked A2S day before a cruise out of San Juan, storm hit NJ and we called as soon as the storm was upgraded. They were able to get us on another flight on another airline, no problem. That storm was so bad they had people getting on the ship on Tuesday and Wednesday with flights from NY to the Caribbean -- A2S covered everyone without paying extra fees. If you are flying far or in iffy weather seasons, it's definitely worth it.

Another example: Flying Newark to Fort Lauderdale, airline lost everyone's baggage. They held the ship so that they could get the bags rerouted to us. Air2Sea was great to deal with as everyone was flipping out, and they had offered a credit option if we couldn't get our bags.

For people who don't see the flights from other airlines or think that A2S just books preferred airlines, you can call the desk and give them the flight numbers and they can book it, no problem. We wanted to take a 2am flight back from San Juan but it wasn't appearing on the site at all. They were able to find it and book it and their price matched our best price on JetBlue. Just go armed with exactly what flights you want and you're set.

  4. Having done every class other than Vision and Quantum I have to say that the Radiance class is my hands-down favorite for all of the reasons stated above:

    - Elegance in decor and layout

    - Open, airy Centrum with fabulous sky and sea views

    - Smaller ship and more intimate socializing with other passengers, less "cattle call" feel when embarking/disembarking and on port days

    - Personally love the adults-only Solarium, it's warm but given that I usually come down from dry and cold regions I can't get enough of it

    - Lovely staff (they're great on all ships but my experience on Jewel and Brilliance has always been a notch above).

    - Interesting itineraries, being a somewhat smaller ship that can visit smaller islands without overwhelming it

Looking forward to Jewel next month and next year for all of these reasons.

  5. Big Black Dick rum. Only available in the Caymans. I keep a bottle around just to see the looks on people's faces.

They changed the name to "Blackbeard" a couple of years ago, though some smaller vendors still have it. The BBD has a special role in my "girls weekends" and had been brought on several trips. We even had "BBD Girls" shirts made up. Certainly is a conversation starter. Who says middle aged gals don't have a sense of humor? :-)

  6. My sincerest condolences on your loss. I've done several cruises over Thanksgiving (this year is our fifth). Our parents are gone and our sibilings have their own families so we just skip town. We've been fortunate enough to travel some years with family, some with friends and sometimes on our own. Regardless, love love LOVE cruising this week. Though it's a holiday it has never felt "overrun" with unruly kids. Thanksgiving day they serve a turkey dinner which isn't spectacular but does feel festive, and the next morning we wake to the ship being decorated for Christmas! They even have their own "Black Friday" sales on the ship. So we love it and try to do it every year. You will love it.

  7. Once I get all of the costs, I'll go ahead and post. It good to know what to expect AFTER the fact. I'm really concerned about the phone costs, but I mostly used my friends and his daughters.

Again, thanks all. As I tell my boys, 'Learn from MY mistakes! You don't have to make the same mistakes that I made'! Or, 'Learn from the mistake of others'.. in this case, Klfhngr's!

Sincere thanks for a really thorough and open recap of your journey. I happened to really enjoy the serial nature of your posts because sometimes, you just don't want to read a novel online. DH and I had a lot of discussions in between your postings about what happened and what would happen next. Thank you for not only relating important messages to us cruisers but giving a really enjoyable reading experience. Safe and on-time journeys ahead to you, sir!

  8. I did AOS SJ in 2003 and would probably never sail it again...we felt the airport and transportation logistics were terrible and it took forever to get in and out. It was the equivalent of an entire day. Plus it's not a short flight, and we can cruise to those places from US ports.

Also, was not appreciative of the hotel shuffling that went on by RCCL. We booked a lovely boutique hotel the night before and were bumped three times to cheaper and cheaper places the two weeks before the cruise. My TA intervened and got us moved to somewhere decent three days before we sailed. Strangely enough, we had weather problems and missed our overnight stay, but we heard some awful stories about the hotel situation and our TA said that the "bait and switch" was common for the hotel packages in SJ (can't say for other places).

So for the logistics problems we encountered, confirmed by other people sailing from SJ, we're cruising from other ports from now on.

BTW, I also thought certain behaviors by passengers were annoying on AOS, but to be honest, annoying people are encountered everywhere. The scooter crowd and the tweens pull regularly stunts on cruises (and other vacation spots...to be fair) that spike my blood pressure. But I keep reminding myself that I can't change them and that the only person hurt by my irritation is me (and my DH!).

    Cheers,

    Esther
