  1. crazyboutcruzin, I realize my response is likely too late and you have probably figured out your situation by now. However, just in case it might help someone else I wanted to mention an article I ran across several days ago. The article is titled "A Guide to Accessible River Cruising" by By Jeannine Williamson, Cruise Critic contributor (www.cruisecritic.com/articles.cfm?=1959). It mentions (well into the article) that AMA Waterways allows collapsible scooters on their ships and has handicapped accessible cabins. There is info. on other lines and their facilities and accommodations for those with mobility issues, as well as things to think about with regard to shore excursions and so on.

Hope this helps you or someone else and good luck with your plans!

That page no longer exists!!!

  2. I know many Cruisers are interested in the history of Prague.

Today, I met the most nice and interesting gentleman and his six-year-old son at a luncheon at the Great Greek Restaurant on Ventura Boulevard in Studio City. Look at his website and see what you think of his Escape from Communism by using electrical high wires to zip line in the snow and rain for 5 hours to escape to freedom in Austria. He now lives in Las Vegas and drives a cab. I pray that George Noory can help him make his book into a movie.

  3. I have successfully used AirBnB 9 times and always pay <$100 a night. I have stayed twice in Barcelona at two different places. I had a private bath and balcony and use of the full kitchen. Quiet and lots of privacy. I'll never use a hotel again.

    ;):D

  4. Oh, dear, Mermaid,

I am so sorry you have lost your confuser. I am lost without mine. You are always such a big help to everybody here. I recommend an Apple. :D

Mine is 5 years and (like me) slowing down a lot. I need to take it into a Genius so they can clean it up.

Interesting that a 13-inch laptop is $1300, a 15-inch is $1500, and the 17-inch is $1700. This month (every year in October) Apple comes out with new phones and laptops.

Although expensive, the customer service and repair is top-of-the-line. Thanks again for all your help! ;)

  5. I am trying to figure out why he keeps trying to divert my business to avalon/uniworld? Am I missing something? Will the t/a make a bigger commission from them or is Viking difficult to work with?

Actually, Viking pays commission on air, transfers, pre- and post-cruise hotels, as well as the cruise (as many other lines do not). I find Viking agents very knowledgeable and helpful and their Air department agents are brilliant as well.

Perhaps shopping for a new T.A. is in order. ;)

  6. The driver has to clean that bathroom, and requests that it be reserved for emergencies only.

These Bus Drivers are highly paid to drive, be courteous & safe, AND Clean the Restroom. It's part of the job. The coaches in South America are very different, stunning, clean, and comfortable. ;)

  7. It's about 4 hours with a half hour stop mid way. Very comfortable bus with restroom on board and bottled water provided. Bring small Euro coins (.50) for the pay toilets at the rest stop!

Thanks, Snocat! I do have my Euros (that I will break down in our Prague hotel) as well as Czech Crowns. ;)

If there is a restroom on the coach, why do I need the rest stop toilet ???

  8. Your Nuremburg to Prague ride will likely be boring highway driving. Our bus (Uniworld), had an assigned tour guide and he answered questions and told us about the history of Germany and the Czech republic for most of the ride, and it was quite interesting. After two hours we stopped at a gas station, as this was the most convenient place for the driver to take his required stop. We were told that German drivers are required to stop for a specific period of time, during which the bus cannot be on (I can't remember if it was 20 or 30 minutes), every few hours.

We have a 3-day pre-cruise in Prague and join the Viking Var in Nuremberg later this month. How long do you think this trip will take with rest stops? Thanks for your help. I really enjoy your Blog. ;)

  9. Notamermaid,

When I lived in Pirmasens from 1954 to 1957, my daughter had a small doll toy and I am looking for one. It is known to be the Mickey Mouse for Germany and it is called either an Eigel or Igel.

Do they still have these dolls? Thanks for your help! ;)

  10. Hi Di, since we have the same sport seat, did anyone tell you about replacing the tips? The gentlemen who convinced me to buy one told me when I got it the first thing I should do is replace the tips with cane tips because they last longer. Apparently the ones it comes with have a very short life when used the way we use them, and the regular cane tips last much longer. I got them in the supermarket, only problem I had was buying the right size.

Yes, Kitty. My middle original wore out so I took it to my local, small hardware store to get the correct size because I know they come in several different sizes. The ones on my kitchen chairs were too small. ;)

  11. My biggest problem is standing still for long periods of time, so I bought a cane with a seat attachment that has been a Godsend! It's a cane when I'm moving and when we stop for background talk I can pop up the seat and sit, costs around $35 from http://www.magellans.com, but they have them other places too, sometimes called a sports seat.

    Hi, Kitty,

Yes, my Magellan's Sport Seat is a life saver. Since it is considered a "health necessity," the airlines do not count it in your carry-on luggage (like my CPAP). I can walk fairly fast but cannot stand for long periods. This is great for when the Tour Guide stops for a while! ;)

  12. At least VIKING almost always monitors cruise critic and comes on and answers the complaining posters. ;)

So where is Emerald? Have they never heard of CC?

I am always receiving their beautiful brochures and was considering using them; however, I am reading some negative things about this new company.

  13. Four weeks from today I will be in Berlin, sightseeing and enjoying the Christmas markets there before moving on to Nuremberg to board the Viking Var for a Heart of Germany cruise.

We are doing Viking's 3-day pre-cruise at the Sheraton Charles Bridge hotel in Prague before taking their transfer to Nuremberg. ;)

I understand it is a 7-hour trip from Prague to Nuremberg because we stop in some towns for lunch, sightseeing, and bathrooms.

How long is your trip from Berlin? Is it a Viking transfer? See you on board. :D
