I live in Dublin, and if it was me I would pick the Mont. It has just been refurbished. It's less than 10 mins walk to Grafton street, and 15 to the Temple bar area. I think the HoHo busses stop on Merrion square.
Thank You for the recommendations. What is your recommendation of the Marriott Moxy 1-5 Sackville Place Dublin vs the Aloft 1 Mill Street, The Liberties Dublin, please? We're staying in Dublin for a week between our two cruises Oct 2020. We enjoy reading your posts. Thank you for sharing.

I am only curious but have to ask0
why would you go on a cruise to an island to visit some place that we have at home?
I was amazed at the number of cruisers waiting in line at a KFC in Grand Cayman-- so I was just wondering why that is
We don't have a HR in our area so we collect HR memorabilia from every city that has one.

Thank You so much everyone for the awesome itineraries and suggestions. I forgot my geography and included Blarney in the Scotland list. That's now on the Ireland must sees. Thanks for helping me figure that out!
It looks like we will be staying in Edinburgh and using points at the Marriott. What would we all do without Tripadvisor and our friends on CruiseCritic! I've already looked at several day trips and multi day trips.Scotland is beautiful and unique. Other great perk of Marriott is they will store your luggage for a day while you are away and check you back in upon returning.
This year's trip will be easier to plan as we can just add more days before the cruise to fit in all of our must sees and just relax days. So nice to not have a time constraint.
Cheers Everyone and Happy Planning

We are a family of 4 adults traveling to Scotland prior to the cruise. Trying to figure if Edinburgh or Glasgow is a better "central home location" for doing day trips to Highlands, Isle of Skye, Loch Ness, Loch Lomand, Blarney Castle, Stirling Castle, Jacobite Train (Harry Potter train ride) Trossachs, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. We would prefer to not have to change hotels and stay in a central location. Other options?
Thank You!

Thank You! I was looking for a car hire from the airport.

We've stayed at the Marriott in the Red Light District and Museum District. Both were located near trams to get us everywhere we wanted to go. Red Light District is "not scary". Mom and I walked the streets at night and never felt unsafe!
Side Note: Book a tour with DamTours Free Walking Tours. Local guides, visit areas off the beaten tourists path, tip at the end of your tour.

We have used SuperShuttle worldwide! When you book your reservation, you will receive an email with detailed instructions on where to meet your vehicle. We claimed our baggage, when through the customs check point, and followed the instructions to our van. If you have any concerns, you can email them or call them. Meeting up with the driver was easy and no stress!

As Shmoo said, the place to look is your roll call.
With that said, DCL roll calls are not really that popular. There are other sites (that we can't mention) that have more traffic.
Agree. Just google your ship and sailing date. You'll find other sites! Highly recommend

If you have time on your way to or from Southampton, visit Salisbury: Laid back quintessential English town; magnificent cathedral and The Magna Carta. What more could you want...:)
Thank You! On our list to do while in Salisbury.

To original poster: If you're not already planning on visiting England outside of London, you could do a day trip to Bath, e.g. We did this when we spent a week in London some years ago.
I would love to go back and visit Bath again. Beautiful little town.

It depends a good deal on what interests you. All I will say is that you should add as much time in London before or after the cruise as you can.
Agree! London is one of our most favorite places to visit! We plan on staying a week prior to our WBTA cruise back to the states.

I can’t thank both MAVIP and Ine enough for your responses. We are on a land tour and added extra days in Amsterdam on our own. I did not research the location of the hotel prior to booking and now realize we are a distance from the central of the city. I did email our hotel regarding transportation with no response. Cruise critic has always been invaluable in planning for a cruise, but really did not expect to receive such detailed information for an area so far from the airport and cruise port. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Cruise Critic is the first place I always start looking when planning a trip. We stayed at the Marriott in the Museum District and found the trams to be very easy. There is an attendant onbaord who helped us get where we needed to go. We found Amsterdam to be one of the easiest cities to get around. I hope you do too!

The nicest way to see Amsterdam is from the canals.
Agree! To max your time, try to start early in the day. Verify last boat time and where the drop of point will be.
Enjoy!

If you could design your own cruise to the British Isles, which ports would be on the must see list, port adventure recommendations, and why? We are a family of 4 adults, previously cruised with Disney, but looking for a new adventure.
Thank You!

Looks great. Thanks for the heads up. We love staying in Dover with our friends who own a charming B&B right on the coast.
Have you sailed on this Princess ship before?
This will be our first cruise on Princess. 8 other cruises with Disney.

We were in Amsterdam last summer and booked a tour through Viator that included Delft and the windmills. Superb!

Definitely not an Uber nor a taxi from the airport rank, not for that sort of distance.
Train is normally the best bet, but altho there's a direct train from Gatwick airport to Southampton central station every hour monday thro saturday, there's no direct service on sundays.
Best is an hourly service with one change of train. Because it involves two train operators it's not cheap. About £36 pp.
Add to that, line maintenance happens on sundays so there's a chance that your train trip will involve a shuttle-bus around any affected part of the line.
https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
So for sundays, the bus might be the better bet.
About £15 pp, but only a few direct buses per day so whether it's the better bet will depend on your flight arrival time.

For a private transfer you should pre-book a fixed-rate service.
Try www.smithsforairports.com or www.westquaycars.com or www.aquacars.co.uk or www.blackberrycars.com
Expect to pay around £100 to £125

Blackberrycars are our favorite service as it is a fixed rate, excellent drivers, and very prompt. Used them on 7 different trips. You will not be disappointed.

Princess has a 12 day 8 port cruise leaving Southampton on September 1, disembarking in Southampton on September 13. You would just have to find a way to Dover.
Looks great. Thanks for the heads up. We love staying in Dover with our friends who own a charming B&B right on the coast.
Have you sailed on this Princess ship before?

I looked on cruisetimetables.com, to see which ships were in Dublin, as a start, and see that Arcadia sails from Southampton on Aug 9th-21st round the islands; Island Princess does something similar on the 24th Aug to Sept 7th.
Arcadia is an adult only ship.
You might find others on that site which suit you- C&M have a ship in Liverpool for the season, which may do trips to Ireland.
Thank You! I'll check them all out.

When you said "This will be our first cruise with Princess", I assumed you had booked with Princess. Is that not correct?
This will be our first cruise with Princess if we decide to book with them. Sorry for the confusion. We're still exploring cruise lines to see which one is the most enticing. Appreciate everyone's comments and recommendations. Please keep sharing.

Thank You for all the great responses!
This is a new experience bringing your own soda on board.
We haven't booked ship/itinerary for British Isles as of yet because I'm waiting for Disney to announce their WBTA back to the States. Would love a BI cruise that takes in Ireland, Scotland, and England. Then 10-12 days on Disney for the WBTA. We've already been to Norway and Denmark so would prefer not to do those this time. More time in London and Isle of Mann.
Any recommendations on cruise lines?

Greetings!
We are a family of 4 adults traveling to the British Isles next August/September. Looking for cruise recommendations to see Ireland, Scotland, and England. Need to be in Dover Sept 13 for our transatlantic cruise back home to the States. We have cruised on Disney many, many times, but they don't offer a British Isles tour Fall 2020.
Love to hear trip reports of past cruises.
Cheers!

We are thinking of doing this same cruise, but have never sailed on Princess. (8 cruises with Disney).

Thanks Irish Comet! Yes, we are reward members. We will be traveling through Ireland, Scotland, Whales, and London for 2 1/2 weeks prior to our transatlantic cruise so I'm hoping to use as many Marriott points to cover our stay as possible I'll look into the other hotels to compare amenities and location. Thanks again!
