  1. My sister busted her foot in a dozen plus places (12+ bones, 12+ places, 7 screws), before she was addicted to heels (higher the heel closer to God.). Since then we have (as a family) been on the hunt for cute flats. Toms has cute lacy flats (super comfy) or glitter flats. Clarks always has great shoes (I found a great pair of 1 inch all over platforms that ferl like a flat. Wore them all day for my sister's wedding. Literally from 0700 until after midnight ). Birkenstocks have super cute metallic cute out sandals I wear to dressy occasions.

  2. In preparing for a long cruise:

o Post office will usually not hold mail for more than 30 days. Either make special arrangements with the post office or arrange for someone to empty your mailbox for you.

o Arrange for a relative or neighbor to look at your home periodically, preferably daily. You do not want a plumbing leak or other problem to go unnoticed until you return.

o Take with you all the web addresses and banking information you need for paying bills that will arrive while you are away. If you can afford to prepay some utilities, do so before you go.

o Check ahead for special things that have to be taken care of before you return. Examples include expiring driver license, renewal of car registration, car and home insurance, etc. Also any credit cards that are set to expire during your voyage.

o If cruising over April 15 (and a USA resident), be sure your income tax return is taken care of before the cruise.

o If cruising in winter, arrange for someone to take any precautions for you to protect water pipes if the temperature will dip below freezing.

o The same as for short cruises, make sure the credit card companies will be notified of your travel plans.

This is all so smart. When I did the Disney Panama Canal cruise, I told my neighbors I'd be gone (with my mom and dad watching my critters at their house; and my sis coming over to check on my house daily) and gave them the numbers to my parents and sister. I said they could use my trash can on trash day (which made it look like I was there.). What was nice was I had a sign on my front door that said "nurse sleeping" and my neighbors had put that up at various times. They really helped me.

  3. I sailed solo on the Disney Wonder 14 night Panama Canal cruise last September. I had a wonderful time. Being a longer cruise that takes place during school term, there were fewer children on board than the norm. But Disney ships in general have plenty of adult areas and entertainment. And adult only means based on age not that it is inappropriate. Plus, Disney has so many structured activities for children, they are less likely to be roaming the ship looking for something to do.

I have enjoyed the people that have been assigned to my dining table on the two Disney cruises I have had, but you do have another option if you want to eat alone. At least on the Wonder, probably on the other ships, the buffet venue converts in the evening to a restaurant. You order off a menu and the wait staff are in training. I did not eat there, but was aware of it.

My most recent cruise was last month on the Norwegian Jewel. It was also solo and I chose to eat alone and read during all my meals. So I do understand and appreciate your preference.

    Lesa

That was the best cruise ever.... hee hee heee

  4. Just picked up something at target that is going in my cruise stash for short or long cruises. My dad is very low vision and he has a hard time finding his stateroom. I found sheets of magnet "wallpaper" for lockers in the back to school section. I will stick a couple of sheets on his door and hopefully he will be able to find it without too much problem.

I do this on all my cruises (I'm going on my first Princess cruise, this was on Disney cruises) with pictures of my dogs. I went to Shutterfly and had the best pictures of my dog made into magnets. People loved it and I was able to find my room.

  5. I was wondering about this policy. I wanted to bring a couple cans of Flip Flop wine for my 3 night cruise. I just thought it would be fun.... but I was curious about the cans....

  6. Sounds like a cool grandad.;)

If you want your kid to be compassionate, heroic, and incredibly nerdy get them into comics. My grandpa got my dad into reading comics (because he read Captain America WW2); my dad tried to get my brother into reading them- brother wasn't into it, but I realized if I got into them I got grandpa and dad time.... I was 6 when I realized this. So yep, cool grandpa! Have to spoil him now.

  7. Speaking of untrue - there is no way that apples, sliced or not will be permitted into BC. No tree fruits other than citrus are permitted. As to the homemade shortbread, that may or may not be permitted. Would depend upon how the OP is planning on travelling from WA to BC.

I am taking the Amtrak train in. I am just going to mail it. My folks can give it to my grandpa early. I'm not mailing the Captain America comics with the shortbread though. I was going to bring Grandpa comic books too... we're dorks.

  8. Direct from the CBSA website:

    Baked goods, candies, etc.

    •no goods containing meat

•up to 20 kilograms per person

Are you bringing in 50 pounds of shortbread?

My grandpa wouldn't complain if I did. At our last family reunion I brought coffee/date/nut bread and this shortbread (and a tin of whipped shortbread, and cookie bars.... seriously I have skillz). My grandpa was so impressed with those cookies he ate them for breakfast. I told my family "I'm not good at a lot of things, not super smart, or adorable. I'm just a geeky nerdy girl with no sense of smell that can (bad word) cook." Grandpa keeps calling asking if I will bring those cookies.

  9. So basically I should just ship a decent sized box down to California? I was going to ship some baby blankies down there too (they would take up too much space in my luggage ), so I will add my pepper spray, jabber thing, and shortbread.

Thank y'all for the hell. I just have a list a mile long of what I want to pack and not and this is a very confusing trip.

  10. Hey there!

This is probably really silly, but I am taking the Sept. 14th Ruby Princess cruise from Vancouver to Los Angeles. It is part of a bigger trip where I'm going to California to see my family then road trip up I5 to bring my mom's car back to Washington. I'm traveling alone and I have a couple questions on what I can/can't bring aboard, because I'd like these items for the road trip aspect.

1.) I carry Damsel in Defense peppy spray on my key chain. It makes me feel safe. It's kinda a weapon, kinda not....?

2.) Roadside assistance kit? Or should I order it on Amazon and have it shipped to my parent's house, so they load it up?

3.) Homemade Scottish shortbread? My grandpa LOVES (!!!!!!! Underline the word 40 times) my shortbread. It is the one thing he cheats on his diet with, and I use butter from a super local creamery. When I make it for him when I am in California it doesn't taste as good. Can I pack it in my suitcase?

I feel lile this trip is three different trips: fancy cruise where I'm an elegant single lady (so cute sundresses, bathing suits, and fancy shoes), family reunion with a Disneyland trip in there (and I kinda want to Disney Bound), and road trip (1400 miles. To do it in three days I have to travel 433+ miles a day. So yoga pants, tank tops, trucker/baseball cap, with books on CD). Having a hard time figuring out what to pack considering when I get back to Washington it will be fall versus summer like CA desert weather.

Thanks in advance for answering! I have only really cruised on Disney and then it was Caribbean or Panama.

  11. Seattle to Vancouver then Vancouver to Los Angeles on the same ship is a passenger services act violation. Do you maybe have a Third cruise either at the beginning or end that might change this?

Just curious what does this mean?

  12. We loved Gladys' Cafe in Charlotte Amalie on St Thomas. Great fresh fish and plantain---

I was just going to say this! Amazing! I try to find food that I wouldn't eat at home and OMGOSH I still talk about their oxtail stew with "rations." It has been 2 years. I keep their hot sauce in my fridge, a little bit is just enough.

  13. The pirate night menu on DCL although perfectly edible, was probably the "worst" meal I have had at sea. Should have gone to Palo/Remy that night instead.

I want to love the Pirate night on Disney cruises. It looks in theory soooooo amazing and I want to like it, but it isn't awesome. I food journal heavily on cruises (I journal heavily period ) and on that meal I wrote "meh."

I don't ever want to be on your bad side.... ;)

I was sooooo pissed. I was livid. Like I don't enjoy making a scene. My ankle was bright purple, giant swollen goose egg (frankly I should've gone into the medical bay and had them take a look at it. But the way the nurse reacted to me, as a nurse irked me. I went to on my ER as soon as I got home. Everyone in the ER, who I'm friends with, were shocked I traveled from Port Canaveral to super islandy Washington with a busted ankle. I got a new reputation at work)- and this twit starts rubbing his foot on the goose egg. Worst pain. I'm typically pretty polite, but even now-years later- my uncle talks about it.

  15. I have had great table mates, except for my second Disney cruise. On paper it looked fabulous. My group was me (early 30 something gal), my mom (50s plus lady), her brother/my uncle (60+ widower) paired with a mom/dad/late 20s son family. One big thing I should note my family is fairly liberal from the states of Washington and California. The other family? Super conservative super Christian Texans! That was fine until the second night the weird son (who lived with his parents, didn't have a job, and there was something just off about him) kept playing footsies and wouldn't stop (at one point his foot was in my crotch and I had my feet so far under my chair). I didn't want to make a scene so I just kept quiet. The rest of the cruise when going to the table, I intentionally sat on the opposite side of the table from the guy. The father complained about everything, constantly making the waiter run. I don't eat a lot of meat, the father would see what I ordered (one night in particular I had a gorgeous couscous cake with the prettiest red pepper sauce ever. It was so pretty I took a picture of it!) and asked the waiter to get me "some real food, you need meat" and ordered me a rare steak almost every night. .. Political, medical (I'm a nurse), and religious conversations weren't off the table- awkward. And the kicker? Last night of the cruise I fell, super ouchie ankle (giant goose egg, went to first aide, didn't want to pay, so I walked into dinner late with ice packs and a limp). I sat down (didn't get to pick my seat), and the son started to play footsies with my owie ankle. I had the steak knife because the father had already ordered me a steak. I don't remember it, but apparently I growled "you touch my (bad word) ankle one more (bad word) time I will (bad word) castrate you." He turned all kinds of pale, I then had to explain in front of his parents (and my family) that his foot had bedn in my crotch despite me saying "knock it off" and my body language clearly saying no. That was epic.

  16. Your coworkers either mean Skytrain, have extraordinarily long legs, or are just plain wrong.

The Amtrak station (Pacific Central) isn't very far, ~1.5 miles, but unless you're traveling very light you will need a cab. If you only have a carryon/backpack, Skytrain is an option, but there is nowhere to put large suitcases on the older lines which run from beside Pacific Central to Waterfront, which is basically just beside Canada Place.

I'd always take a cab with typical cruise luggage - expect to pay $10 to get near CP, then an extra few bucks while the meter ticks up as you wait in the long line of cabs to enter the pier. Or just get out nearby and walk in - same entrance as the Pan Pacific hotel leads you right up the main internal corridor toward the luggage drop & cruise check in at the far end.

Hm.... I am going on the repositioning cruise from Vancouver to California, so I was going to pack my rolling carryon and a messenger bag (maybe a sleeping bag for the last part of my trip). Hmmmmmm.... thinking thinking.

  17. Ron Glass from the old Barney Miller TV show was on the Elation a few years ago. Really nice guy. Had lunch with him.

    I would've freaked. Shepard Book.

Okay so this is one of those crazy stories that I can't believe wasnt a bigger deal than it was, and whenever I tell it- part of me doesn't believe it.

In July of 1991 I went on a cruise through the Hawaiian islands, this cruise was based around seeing the last full eclipse of the 20th century. It was crazy with a lot of lectures. I was 10 years old. Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon, was on the boat and friends with my grandpa. So I have a ton of pictures in a box with 10 year old gold lamè dress, my 10 year old cousin with a clip on tie, and the first man on the moon... That's normal right?

  18. Hey y'all!

My friends and I are looking at booking the April 4th 2016 Star Princess out of Vancouver, BC to Hawaii cruise. I just have a couple questions and I thought I'd ask you:

1.) I've done 3 Disney cruises (no kids, just a big Disney dork). How does Princess compare? Will I be disappointed? Or will I be wowed?

2.)Age wise of the people? We're in our 20s (Em is going to be 28 on this cruise), 30s (my 35th birthday is the day before), and 40s (Jess will be 43). But we work in a hospital in a town where 90% of the population is over.... 76? So we are used to old people, we like old people. We like young people too. I just don't want a thousand kids at my ankles.

3.) Prices of alcohol and alcohol policies in general? I know on Disney you can bring as much as you can carry. Princess the same? Not huge drinkers, but want to know.

4.) Differences? Awesomeness of Princess that I don't know about? Anything to help us before we book.

The reason why we want to do this cruise compared to anything Disney has to offer is it leaves the day after my birthday (midlife crisis birthday!) out of Vancouver which is a 90 minute drive northeast of us (I know that sounds strange. I live on a tiny island in the middle of the San Juans. That is how it is east.). So we thought no flights/no fights/Kim (me) gets to have her freak out in the middle of the Pacific ocean/we're going to Hawaii! As a "Star Wars" nerd the idea of hanging out at Skywalker's sounds fun! I just want help with logistics. Thanks!

  19. OMG. If we go on a Princess cruise (researching it now) this will be my groups' favorite place. We are all night shifters. Last cruise (Disney cruise last September) my group of friends ordered- I kid you not- at 0100 via room service: 2 pizzas, chicken wings, cereal, 2 pieces of the cake of the day, milk, and "to be healthy" a salad. At 0100, after we got out of dinner at 9:30pm. We are awake at 0200 hungry.

  20. Hey!

So my group is taking the Disney Wonder out of San Diego Sept. 12th. My question is kinda' complicated. We are flying into Long Beach, renting a car, spending a couple days in CA (my family is there), then we're supposed to drop our car off at the San Diego airport/Budget rental car agency. Is there a shuttle at Budget that will drop us off at the Broadway Pier in San Diego or do I get a taxi or....? It looks like it is only 2.56 miles. So if I drop the girls off with my luggage at the pier, then return the rental car, and walk over that would take like 30 minutes right? Just trying to figure this all out.
