I brought a 2" memory foam topper on our Serenade crossing last April. There was no way I was risking 16 nights of poor sleep! Since it was brand new, it came in a plastic bag all shrink wrapped down. We just left it on the bed when we arrived in Barcelona. We have the exact same cabin next January. I wonder if it will still be there? We felt it was $50 well spent.

We did the same but bought a cheaper one. I would never use one that was used😱 I even bring my own pillow protectors and pillow cases.

  3. What am I missing here?

The Summit sails out of Bayonne. Most of NCL`s cruises are out of NY City believe me this is apples and oranges.

There is no comparison between the Summit and the Escape, I don`t care what the refurb is.

That parking promo is not offered by Celebrity it is by some agency.

There is so much misinformation on this topic it boggles the mind.:classic_rolleyes:

  4. Not going to read the entire thread so if this has been said forgive me.

My experience with uncleanliness in a cabin was in a suite on Carnival. When we got in the room I wasnot that pleased it just didn`t seem "right" somehow. The next day as I was pulling the curtain back in the living room behind the couch there was a lot of garbage, dust, hair  I inspected the entire suite I was disgusted even the balcony was a mess, clogged drains full of gunk and there were bugs all over.

I called for the deck supervisor and he came within minutes. He took pictures. I said I wanted all the furniture shampooed pulled away from the wall and all the carpeting shampooed as well as the balcony washed.

Then I asked about the vents he said the filters were changed every 3 months . This was a housekeeping issue.

When we got back from dinner it was a different cabin...shampooed...dusted...furniture repaired. I was a happy cruiser.

Allergies can come from many sources not only the HAVAC system....so inspect, inspect, inspect EVERYTHING.

  5. There was a thread on here yesterday, where a Dad asked on behalf of his vegetarian daughter about guy's burger. I made a suggestion, but got flack from someone who said that my idea did not equal a veggie burger, oh well....here goes again:o

As others have suggested ask first if there is a veggie burger, and if not, you could ask for the bun without the burger, and fries if you wish those too. Then you can take your burger to the guy's toppings bar for many non meat items, and also blue iguana not far away from there has beans and again many non meat items.

yes, I know this is not the same as a veggie burger per se, but it is very delicious, and it is what I did once. I'm not vegetarian, but don't eat much meat, and certainly almost never eat ground beef, though I made an exception for one guy burger, then decided I liked it better without the meat.

So, it is just a suggestion, but do ask first if they have a veggie burger, as some do report that they have gotten them.

Also, the vegetarian options in the dining room at dinner are quite tasty, there is always one, as well as the vegetarian indian meal.

    Have a great cruise:)

    very good helpful suggestion:D

  6. Enjoy life. Eat meat!!! My mother hates vegetables AND fruit. She turns 90 this summer and has never weighed more than 140 pounds. She's 5ft 7inches. Still driving a car and living on her own. Nothing tastes better than a steak off the grill. Or a burger.

She has good genes:) There are other reasons to not eat meat:p

  7. Thanks Jean for posting about lack of warnings on Equinox. Since Celebrity has been reading this- let's ask them for a response.

Insect repellents should be available during disembarking at port stops and ideally, added to the beach tote bag in each stateroom.

According to Consumer Reports org the two top rated sprays for two kinds of mosquitoes- Culex and Aedes are:

Sawyer 20% Picaridin- available in a spray pump and lotion. Sawyer is the highest rated because it also repels deer ticks.

    Equally effective against mosquitoes is:

Off Deep Woods V111- light green can "dry" formula- 25% DEET.

In the recent Consumer Reports study, they used the "fisherman formula" of Sawyer which I couldn't find locally. I called Sawyer and they said the fisherman name was just a marketing thing and all their Picaridin products are the same 20% Picaridin. The box says "will not harm fishing lines and gear"- I wonder if this was why the original was called "fisherman's." In Consumer Reports some people reported difficulty using the Sawyer pump spray. The Picaridin is meant to be applied directly to skin (?) whereas the Deep Woods appears to be an aerosol and can be applied to the outside of clothing or skin. For clothing, the Sawyer rep recommended a permethrin spray which lasts several months.

All other formulations/brands/chemicals or natural products were less effective according to Consumer Reports.

For cruise passengers traveling from abroad, if you arrive early in US the Off Deep Woods brand is readily available in drugstores, grocery stores etc. Sawyer is often found in outdoor stores such as REI.

Or google UK insect repellents- I think someone tested UK common brands a few years ago.

Previously, the dark green "wet" Deep Woods was one of the highest rated- apparently not tested this year- only the dry formula which is new (?)

Deep Woods also makes DEET towelettes- individually wrapped.

Ordered Sawyer on Amazon this morning:)

  8. I hate to drag up an old thread, but I just read about something that applies to this subject.

My husband and I generally avoid hand sanitizers because we believe that to build up immunity, you need to be exposed to germs and bacteria. Obviously we don't mean handling nasty things or deliberately exposing ourselves to sick individuals but we don't try to sterilize our environment. We had a real struggle not interfering with my son-in-law's insistence on washing our granddaughter's hands each time she touched anything out of the ordinary. We have traveled a far amount and the only problem we've had with health was respiratory problems after visiting Shanghai.

Yesterday, the news carried stories about childhood peanut allergies. The stories referenced something called "hygiene hypothesis" that explains our beliefs regarding cleanliness. This article explains the idea:

    http://fooddrugallergy.ucla.edu/body.cfm?id=40

While you may not agree there has been some serious research done by reputable scientist that back up this theory.

Please, don't assume that other people are dirty, thoughtless or ignorant if they don't use sanitizers. They may be right.

This may be in building immunity in a child but if you have immunity problems ie.......auto immune diseases, undergoing cancer treatment etc. please use sanitary precautions in a closed crowded setting. Think of others.
