Want to share some pictures for those who wants to know what to expect in Toarmina.
Be aware of the taxi drivers in front of the docks they have only one game : cheating tourists. Walk some distance round the corner and take a taxi for half day, expect to pay about 80-100 Euro incl. tip.

Thanks so much for the great pictures. Looking forward to exploring Taormina and will heed your advice about taxis!

Think I got the name wrong, but you all know. I never do more than a carryon and tote or "backpack." Not a "real" one, but a soft pouchy thing that goes on the back that I got years ago and is invaluable. I often take worn underwear and then throw it away. Panties are small and don't take much room, but I do plan to wash some of them. I take about half the number of days. Follow the rule: it goes with two things or doesn't go in the bag. One or two colors that go together. Black and khaki, white and anything. My BEST TIP: short packable skirts from Columbia or other "outdoor" brands. I have three or four and they are cooler than shorts and easier in the bathrooms. Also have pockets with zips. Water bottle is essential; aluminium best. Kindle essential for me plus charger. Phone plus charger. Maybe iPad. wear your heaviest, bulkiest shoes.
love more tips from anyone.

Great info for the Croatian ports. Anything more you can share? Going in July 2014

many thanks to "real property" for the detailed narrative about the trip down the Croatian coast. Hoping more people post about their experiences. What were your impressions of the Star Pride?? Some have expressed disappointment in the lack of outdoor experience on this ship and a crowded breakfast. Anyone???

Really appreciate your take on the Star Pride experience. That was a bit disappointing to hear but good to be prepared. Star Clippers is an experience I loved, but wanted a tad more comfort. I fear this may have sacrificed too much of the "good stuff."

Would love to share in the replys you receive. We don't go until July. Be sure to post about your trip when you return!!!! Have a great time!:)

We will be on Windstar ships for the second time in July. This time on the "new" Star Pride. Would love to hear from anyone who has been on this ship or has done the Venice to Rome itinerary!! What are the best excursions? what to avoid? Which Croatian stops are the most interesting? Would love any and all input!!!!

If you like a small ship with a mix of ages, I would say Starclippers. I'm in the older range and recently took my 3rd cruise with my son, his wife and their 21 year old daughter. We all had a good time and all fit in just fine. I saw no age discrimination or favoritism anywhere.

Thanks so much for the details on your experience! Very helpful! You are clearly stronger walkers than I am because of my back problems, so I will not be taking walking tours, but it was great to know what options there are!:)
