  1. If shopping in Cartagena watch out for bogus "deals" on emeralds. Mr. Emerald is a reputable dealer but some of the others sell poop emeralds for inflated prices. Of course no place will be cheap. I love the "the tag says $900 but for you I will mark it down to only $600 this one time" people. Yeah, right. Lots of that sort of "deal" available. I was also amazed by the number of highly aggressive street vendors. Sheesh... I thought Mexico had a lot but, compared to Cartagena there were almost none in Mexico. We were glad we were with Dora's tours as they recognized her and "mostly" left us alone although we did have one guy actually try to climb into the van at one spot to try to sell tee shirts. Don't get me wrong though. We thoroughly enjoyed our stop in Cartagena. :D

    Thrak,

I have to second your thoughts here. Years ago (2013) my Mother and I had a tour with Dora and were really glad that we chose her for the tour.

Did she take you by one of her former students, or something like that, who does street art where he does a painting on a mirror square while you watch??? It takes him about 10-15 minutes or so and it was amazing to watch. I videoed the piece that he did and bought it as well as a couple of others for a reasonable price. I thought that it was unique and wanted to reward his talent. She took me to Mr Emerald's store and I purchased some emeralds for my Mother without her knowing. She was a bit tired and sore and stayed on the minibus when we stopped at this shopping spot. Dora stayed with me and helped so that I could choose some surprise emeralds for my Mom. It was a great surprise for her, and she was totally caught off guard.

So, your advise here is spot on! We really liked Cartagena too!

    Happy Cruising!

  2. A camera question if I may please. How do you keep your lens from fogging up when you take your sunrise early morning shots. I know I don't get my lens acclimated from my cool cabin to the warm Caribbean air is my first dilemma. So I gather I must get up earlier to do so or do you have another trick?

Beside sacrificing a lamb in the cabin and praying to the gods?

I do nothing except start my day with a cigarette and cup of coffee or two-the camera is with me but isn't used for 30 minutes or more so fogging is never an issue. The camera is ready to go when I am.

    Norris,

Still following the excellent review. I figured that I could pass on a camera fog trick that was shared with me some time ago... hopefully it will help you, hockeyguru32, or others in the future. I have had good luck with it. The night before, or even just a little while before going out, I put the cameras on or right next to the exhaust vent for the mini-fridge in the room and add a hand towel like a blankey for the cameras/lens. I have had good luck with this, especially when I do not have the time to let my cameras acclimate to the outside air conditions. I hope that this helps someone, as it sure helped me when I was advised of this little trick.

  3. Here's a photo I took of that elevator of the Ruby Princess:26523398486_c7a46c239f_c.jpg

    Bimmer09, (Norris)

Thanks for another one of your great Cruise Reports with wonderful pictures, and thanks to Jasperdo for sharing his picture from his vast collection here. I have been following along quietly. This reply does not really pertain to the ship that Norris is on, but I thought I would share the following about the Handicapped Accessibility of Stargazing on Royal Class ships for people's information.

I wish that the Royal Princess had a similar Lift setup for the highest deck given that it is one of Princess's newer ships, but we were disappointed (Bummed is a less harsh word I guess!) to discover that this was not the case. On our recent cruise on the Royal Princess my Mom was really very interested in going to the Stargazing and several other events events that were held on the 19th Deck - Sky. We did try to make our way there for an event, and we did manage to find a Tiny (2 Person, that said holds 4 LOL!) Aft Handicap Lift (which most of the staff that we asked said did not exist!!!) from the 17th Deck - Sun to the the 18th Deck - Sports, but it did not continue up to the Lawn Court and Sun Deck up on 19. I am guessing that they did not do it because of financial reasons, but it was a bummer that disabled individuals who just can't do stairs are unable to attend some great events and programs up there on the 19th Deck.

Sorry to jump in on the thread, but I thought that it would be good for people to know this fact if they are considering Stargazing or other activities on the Royal Princess that are up on the top deck. I am not sure if this follows on the following Royal class ships or not.

  4. The towels on Princess aren't great but they work and that's really all I require. At home I use "bath sheets" for my shower towel. I love the big size. Fortunately I don't cruise for the towels. We have never had any towel animals so don't miss them.

    Thrak,

Like you I am a big Bath Sheet guy, and I hate the small bath towels that most hotels and Princess uses. I will share my secret with you... I get a supply of the beach towels and use those as my shower towels! Almost as big as a Bath Sheet and they do the job much better. Good stewards that I have had in the past replace them for us as I mention that we use those instead of regular bath towels. If they don't replace them for me I just get a resupply from the pool the next time I am up there. Up to now, we only cruise on Princess and never have had a towel animal either... We like to go ashore and find real animals! LOL

    Happy Cruising!!!

  5. does anyone know what the standard balcony cabin door is on the royal?

We will be renting a scooter for mom and we want to confirm it will fit into the cabin. Rental company said their scooters are 21"

    Thanks

We were just on the Royal a few weeks ago and I did feel that the doors are narrower than other Princess ships that we have been on. (I did not measure the opening as I had nothing to measure it with and we just made things work.) My mother travels with a Walker/Rollator (with a seat) that is 23.75 inches wide, and it was no where near able to be rolled into the room. She is getting older and much more mobility challenged, so the walker has been a great aid for her especially during tours and in the buffet, etc.. It allows us to still cruise with a little modification of what we do. I would have to partially collapse it and manhandle it sideways in the door opening as it was a little awkward given the narrow space of the doorway and little hall area. (One of the reasons I chose a collapsible model for her!) We have only gone on a couple cruises with her walker as she used to be fine with only her cane. Our first cruise with her walker we were put into a handicapped accessible cabin by Princess so we had no problems with the wider door. The cruise on the Royal was our first time in a regular Balcony Cabin with the walker and it was a bit of a pain, but I got used to manhandling it. I then parked the walker right in the closet unfolded. If we were going to be going right back out shortly I just backed the walker up flush to the door and left it out there. (I made sure that it was not in the way of people walking in the hallway, and only left it out for short periods.) I do feel that the hallways by the rooms are a bit narrower on the Royal class as well, but that is just an observation and supposition on my part. There was no way that my mom could get passed the Steward's Carts with the walker, so I usually got clever and moved there carts for Mom to pass, and then moved them back. If the stewards were at the cart they were great about moving them for my Mom to pass. I did notice that there were scooters parked and charging in the elevator lobbies, especially by the staff elevators. Hopefully someone was able to answer your question directly, I just wanted to share our recent experience.

    Happy Cruising!!! :D

  6. We shall be on the Caribbean Princess next month, although it will be a different itinerary, a fourteen day Southern Caribbean cruise. I do have a couple of questions...

    1) It is hard to judge the portion size at Planks by your photos. If the containers of sauce are small, it looks as though the portions are small as well. Your take on this?

    2) From your postings, I know that you are up late, thus you may not be able to answer this one. What time are the pools open in the morning? I like to take an early swim while me darling wife sleeps late. Also, is there one pool that is somewhat covered in case of inclement weather?

You definitely won’t go hungry at Planks. Each portion of the 4 meats is not huge, but 4 together makes for a lot of food. Most people I heard can’t finish it all.

There is no covered pool on the CB, so if it’s raining, you’re out of luck. The adults-only pool off the spa is the most sheltered, but also has the smallest deck space. I’ll get a pic for you later. The aft pool does have the Skywalkers structure above, so there’s lots of shade, but any wind would drive any rain everywhere. I’ll see if I can find what time the pools open, which is undoubtedly way to early for me...

I have attached a photo that I finally found that relates to my earlier post on Planks a few back. It does seem to me that they have reduced the portion sizes from our visit in Late September, probably as they were seeing a good deal of waste. (We may have already eaten some of the food when the picture was taken if I remember correctly. Also, we did not finish everything as we got full.) The portion cups for the sauces are small, you could probably estimate the size by looking at the pickle slices as they are standard size. In my picture it was one single "plank" with both mine and my Mom's meal mixed together. As I stated we would have preferred our own individual planks, especially if we were dining with others. Especially the beans and coleslaw for example. If it was meant to be family style serving it could have been done better in our opinion, and it should be clearly stated that way. On the menu it even states that you create YOUR OWN PLANK with the choices listed. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining as it was an OK meal, and the price seemed fair. Just wanted to share our experience as well.

On our cruise we were somewhat disappointed with the overall quality and selection of the food on the ship in comparison to our other Princess cruises. We were not alone as many fellow passengers felt the same, and we read similar comments made on our roll call even after the cruise. Comments were made about all of the food offerings including the MDR, Buffet and specialty restaurants. It was just not up to par as we usually experience on Princess. I really feel that I may know the reason why, and that is the Executive Chef at the time. I deduced this when I found out who it was, and then recalled that we had a cruise in the past that we felt the same way about the food and it was the same Executive Chef. The Executive chef does, in our opionion, have a great effect on the food. I have heard others make this Executive Chef observation here on CC before, and I really must agree with them now. We are hoping that these are just exceptions and not the rule for the Princess food offerings going forward! We will be taking our first cruise on the Royal soon and are really looking forward to checking out the buffet and other food offerings that we have heard so much about, as well as a new class of ship for us to enjoy! We always go with an open mind and a desire to have a great cruise!

    Happy Cruising!

P.S. judging from the photos and comments in this "Live From" it does seem like the food is much better!!! (Also I did see in the patters that were posted that there is a different Executive Chef now!)

  7. One word: Wow. I’d heard mixed reviews about Planks, but I could find no fault whatsoever. And I’m a man who loves his BBQ. The meat was hot, tender, and flavorful, and the sauces were tasty without being overpowering. A definite positive review!

(BTW, these are the same meatballs as the starter one)

Thanks for your posting your live from. A quick Planks question... Did you go to Planks by yourself or with someone else? It looks like your meal may be on a single serving platter, but I could be wrong. When I went to Planks a few month's ago with my mother, we both ordered individual items of our choosing, but they were served together on a big joint platter. This was not to our liking, and I would imagine if you were dining with new friends it may be a bit awkward eating from one large platter? (For us it was ok as we are related, but it was not as we were expecting. Also there were some things like and odd number of an item, with an even number of guests. Not a really big deal.) We mentioned this to the head waiters and they said they were still working things out and appreciated our feedback. It does look like the portions have been reduced judging from your picture. Just curious if they did change how they do it now?

  8. I’m sorry that I don’t have any tour suggestions. We’re only doing one—and that is a snorkeling one in Bonaire through Princess. There was another company recommended by people on our rollcall, but it was full by the time we booked the cruise. That’s one downside to booking cruises late. There will be folks offering tours at each port. We took a nice island tour last December when we were in Bonaire. It was either $20 or $25 per person and went basically around the island. We’ve also taken a similar tour in Curacao. But mainly the ship is our destination, especially this time around.

We talked with a family at breakfast who were disappointed that their suite did not include access to the Enclave. They had been in suites on other ships and had enjoyed the thermal suite benefit.

After a losing effort in the afternoon trivia (12 out of 20—where the winning team (consisting of people doing back-to-back cruises) scored 20), we had a taste of gelato. There was a little bit of confusion as to whether they honored the coffee card, according to a woman ahead of us in line. She was told it wasn’t initially and paid for some scoops, only to be told later that it could be done for a punch. We got ours for a punch. I also got an herbal tea from the coffee bar.

We’re going to relax this afternoon. The weather has gotten a bit worse and the seas a bit rougher. We’re getting a little bit of spray on our balcony on the Aloha Deck.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer everyone's questions!!! I agree that booking so late makes pre-planned excursion arrangements so hard, but the awesome cruise price sure makes up for it. Since we have never been on a Royal class ship, I think the ship itself will be a great deal of the destination for us as well. I guess that we will see what tours Princess has left when we get on-board, or we may just wing it at the port since you have kindly confirmed that there are usually folks at these ports offering tours. We may just explore on our own too? Thanks again and have a wonderful cruise and great birthday!

    Happy Sailing!

  9. geoherb,

I remember your name from a couple of past cruises, but can't remember which ones?

I am definitely following this thread as we will be doing almost the same voyage on 12-30-17.

You mention that you have been to most of the ports before, so I am curious if you have any quick suggestions (only if you have a free moment of course!) as to what to do, or any good tour companies since we have been to none of these ports before? Can you just get off of the ship and find a tour at the docks on these ports? We will be doing the same ports except for Princess Cays in place of Amber Cove. Wish we could have gone there as I have not been there before.

Congrats on enjoying the Suite! We hope that you have a wonderful time!!! It will be our first time on a Royal class ship, so we are getting excited and will live vicariously through your journey!

    Happy Cruising!

Edit to add question: Is the internet the faster internet yet? On my last cruise I heard from the Internet Manager that most all of the ships were "supposed" to be switched by the end of the year. I was sceptical, but he seemed to be confident. Just curious as I usually have to work some while cruising, and the slow internet kills me!

  10. After reading many posts I feel a need to explain my situation.

    All hugs are welcomed.

    Tom

Thanks for your courage in sharing! I hope to meet you on a cruise some day.:D

EDIT: I just remembered that you have cruised with my Aunt Sharon and Uncle Murray on the SA Cruise at the beginning of the year!

  11. Once created, the animated and responsive Tagalongs will appear online within a guest's profile and in interactive PlayOcean games that can be played online, as well as interacting within Ocean Portals found onboard Medallion Class ships. Tagalongs even evolve throughout the cruise, reflecting the personality and interactions of the guest and collecting "charms" that show off their achievements.Guest Tagalongs also will take center stage in the social gaming experience Tagalong Sprint, which pits guests' digital companions in a fast and fun race across the ocean floor. Guests will tap their personal Compass devices to see who can speed across the finish line first in this rhythm-based group game played on massive digital displays found onboard Medallion Class ships.

"The Ocean Tagalong is a great way for guests to express themselves and gives us the opportunity to engage them in unique experiences that amplify fun and stoke their competitive spirits," said John Padgett, chief experience and innovation officer for Carnival Corporation. "Driven by the Ocean Medallion, guests will be amazed at how their Tagalongs appear in dynamic settings around the ship and delighted by the ways their companions can interact throughout their vacation."

    Quoted from the original link.

So I got to thinking about this, will the tagalongs compete and earn "Virtual Prizes" such as Virtual Crappy Bubbly :bottle-pop::champagne-toast: or Virtual Magnet Clips or Virtual Water Bottles or Virtual Carabiners or... you get the idea! ;):D;p LOL!

  12. I don't know about the rest of the country but California certainly does love to charge taxes. The get us coming, going, and while at rest. :(

They are so bad that I feel that they will come after me after I die hoping to tax me more!!!!!!!! :loudcry:

  13. It looks like they have now enclosed some of the outside seating tables that were under the covered outside area by the Outrigger Bar? Am I correct in this assumption???

I am liking the pictures that I have seen of the retrofit of the Caribbean Princess thus far. It is nice to see Princess doing some varietal changes. It will be nice to try it out when we are on that ship.

  14. Don't expect the La Patisserie on deck 5 to be anything close to the International Cafe on most of the other ships. This is one of the big disappointments when they did the redo of the Island Princess... They DID NOT add a IC!!!:mad: DUMB!

This is more of a bar that also does fancy coffees, and on occasion have one or two small trays of finger sandwiches or pastries.

You are better off up at the end of the Buffet area as they have a very nice dessert bar and beverage area and on the Port (Left looking forward) side they have an area that does the fancy coffees. Between the buffet and this area you have your "part time IC." Bummer is that it does not help if you want something past around 11 or midnight, then you only have room service.

  15. I have had the Smoke house BBQ on other Princess ships so it is not just a Royal or Regal thing. It is not on all of the ships though. I can't remember right now which ships that we have had it on and which we haven't. I just wanted to let people know to have hope that it will be available on their cruise! LOL :D

ADDED....... I actually do remember getting it on the Crown Princess in January of 2015 and even have a picture of the Brisket, Wings, and Ribs that I will attach here. We got a big plate to share. (I may be wrong on this, but the Brisket that they do may be from a Corned Beef Brisket, as I thought that that flavor came out... It was a little odd to me. Maybe someone else thought the same thing?) The next night we "taught" them how to make Chili Cheese Fries with their Chili from the grill area.

I have to add another comment that has to do with the new CC site as well as the old one, but it is even worse now: I tried at first to upload pictures that I have uploaded in the past to Cruise Critic and it would not allow me and said: The Dimension limits for this filetype are 620 x 280. We were unable to resize your file so you will need to do so manually and upload it again. Your file is currently 1440 x 1080.

I find this even more frustrating than before as it seems that the size that they allow now is just too minuscule!!(n)Don't get me wrong, I love CC, but some things are just sad compared to other forums out there... I personally think that a KB size limit would be more reasonable as opposed to a tiny pixel/resolution limitation. You can resize some photos into decent sized photos with relatively small KB size. I don't do enough with photos to go to the trouble of getting a hosting site and putting them all up there! I just want to share a little bit every so often! OK, off my Soap Box!!!

Am I the only one who feels this way?

The size of the graphics you attempted to upload and attach were too large and were automatically resized. After modification, the graphics appear to be a good size for viewing. See below.

Perhaps you should head over to the Test Forum where you can experiment with graphics...

    Lew,

Thanks for responding!:) Thanks for also taking the time to post them for viewing too.

I think that I was more frustrated with the fact that the pictures that I tried to upload were ones that I actually had previously uploaded to "the old" Cruise Critic at the originally resized (by me) resolution. With the new site they would not upload and I had to again resize them even smaller myself, they did not automatically resize them. I would like it if CC AUTOMATICALLY resized pictures, it would be more friendly that way. Their new site is more friendly in that they do give you the max picture resolution that can be uploaded... the old site would just sit there and choke IIRC. I would have to keep resizing down until it would take. The main thing that I really wanted to share originally is that the post of the Smokehouse BBQ only being available on the Royal and Regal was mistaken and that it was available on other ships as well, just not all of them.

  17. Just an FYI the smokehouse style BBQ at night is only on Regal and Royal Princess.

If you research the dining options on Princess website it appears that it's only Regal and Royal that offer additional items (ribs, pulled pork, wings Route 66 chili) at dinner at the Trident Grill. I do not believe the Grand class ships and lower offer these items at night - the evening/dinner BBQ at Trident Grill is a Royal class exclusive offering.

I stayed on the boat and took pics of some folks with their camera while they posed in the swell. Then I dove in without the cameras for a quick swim. The water wasn't as warm as I had hoped and as I was afraid of standing up lest I stand on a stingray (not good) I swam back to the boat and up the ladder to dry off. I've petted stingrays in an aquarium but kissing them is out of the question.

    Norris,

After reading this post I realized that Carole and I have a VERY VERY CLOSE friend in common..... I call him RAY!!!:D See attached. LOL!

I got some good underwater videos from when I went on this excursion with "Captain Marvin's" (I HIGHLY Recommend them!) in Grand Cayman and I would offer to put some up on YouTube, but it would probably be drastically quicker to send you a DVD via snail mail after hearing of your issues with trying to upload on YouTube!

This was from 09-22-14, and I want to go back again and take my Mom with me so that she can experience this. This was one of my SOLO cruises.

Only having cruised Princess I am not aware of the costs on Celebrity for the Specialty Restaurants. When you get a second, would you mind sharing the costs? The Lawn Grille looked like I would really enjoy that!

Still enjoying procrastinating by reading your review! Thanks!

    Regards,

P.S. I had to edit the post pictures in your quoted message down a bit as I just discovered that CC only lets you have 6 images including smileys in one post apparently. Also sorry for the small sized attached photos... another restriction that I am not too fond of on CC. I wish that they could be physically larger, but still low in kb size.

  19. Dave,

I always vote for more days if possible, especially if the price is very similar. Also the extra OBC and internet minutes add value as well. More ports to me is more entertaining also. I am getting to the point that even 7 days seems too short. On our last cruise both my Mother and I felt that the 19 days was not enough! LOL :D If we only had infinite amounts of time and money! :)

I am assuming that you are going SOLO on both cruises, so one more thing to consider is that you will get 2 cruises credits on Princess for sailing SOLO which will get you closer to elite status!

If I was going on one of those big new ships like the Anthem I would need more days to explore and enjoy it.

    Whatever your choice, Happy Cruising!!!

P.S. Pretty Cat! Looks like my friends cat.

Yes, at the bar at La Patisserie on deck 5.

Additionally there is a "coffee bar" right at the Port side of the dessert station of the Horizon Court Buffet at the front of the ship.

I think they might also be available at the casino bar as well, but I do not remember about specialty coffees for sure... (I am sure someone who knows for sure will chime in to confirm or not?)

I know that they have regular brewed coffee as I get it there.

    Happy Cruising!!!
