  1. We are taking a cruise to Hawaii in Nov. on Star Princess. We were on her a year ago and the mattress was terrible, hard as a rock. The Star is not scheduled to get new mattresses until AFTER our cruise. My question is, would we be allowed to bring our own mattress topper? We aren't flying so there is no issue there. Anyone have any clue if Princess would allow that?

    Thank you.

  2. We were just on the Star for a 15 day cruise to Hawaii. Returned on Dec 20. I thought the ship was in fine condition. My only complaint was the mattress. We were in C 703. The mattress was horrid. I had a hard time sleeping. Other than that, the cruise was great.

  3. We just returned from the Star Princess Pacific Coastal and stayed in the Grand Suite. The mattress was the worse we have ever had on Princess cruise ( 14 and counting...). It was like sleeping in a tea cup. It should have been flipped.....over the railing a long time ago.

Well that doesn't give me much hope. The only Princess ship we have been on was Ruby, and the bed was wonderful. We will be on Star in early December of this year. Way before the scheduled mattress change. I sure hope we get lucky. If not, I hope they have a bunch of mattress crates (is that what the things are called that go on top of the mattress?) for us to use.

  4. Consider a drive "upcountry" to Paia and then onward to Makawao. Both are small walkable villages with some unique shops, eateries, and Aloha Spirit. From there you could continue the drive to Kula, and simply enjoy the beauty of mother nature. Or you could take a different drive down south by the ocean through Kehei and Makena and again enjoy mother nature. Nothing (except Hana) is "far" from anything else.

Just give yourself time to get to the luau (I assume it's in Lahaina) because there's literally only one road in to Lahaina and around Maalaea it gets to be pretty traffic jammed until around Olowalu (it adds about 25 minutes to the drive - that's about a 9 mile stretch), but then mellows out again.

Thank you for the suggestions. I'll check into these places.

  5. Just a note for those contemplating a visit - The Maui News reported this morning that the Iao Valley State Park will remain closed for four to six months due to flood damage.

Well that is disappointing news. We will be there in December. We planned to rent a car and visit Iao Valley State Park. Thanks for the heads up. We have time to come up with another plan.

  6. Don't forget to decorate your cabin door! We were on the Emerald for Christmas in 2015 and decorated ours. We saw numerous doors decorated. I'll try to post the pic.

Your door is so cute! What did you use to make it stick to the door. I read somewhere that they don't like you to use tape. Am I misinformed?

  7. Thank you for the link. I just ordered one.

There are two 120V U.S. outlets at the desk and they are several feet apart. There is also one 240V European outlet. Only one item can be plugged into each outlet. We bring one of these to charge all of our electronics that use USB chargers. They also have cheaper models that have fewer ports. We need this model because we bring two iPhones, two iPads, two Apple watches, two Bose noise cancelling headphones and a Kindle and we can charge all at once if we wish.

  8. My husband and I would like to book a cruise to the Panama Canal for next Spring. Would you advise to book directly through HAL via Personal Cruice Consultant ( or am I confused about PCC?) or should we use a site like Cruise Direct, or should we wait until September and book while on board a Alaska cruise? In the past we have just called HAL and booked with whomever answered the call.

Thank you in advance for your advice.
