  1. A friend of mine was on Eclipse a few weeks ago. He tells me the first thing he did was go and the gratuities removed. He then said he missed his room steward on the last day, so tipped no one.

There are times when I want to remove my home country from my profile. So often these tipping threads leave me shaking my head and ashamed to admit I'm British. Please don't tar us all with the same brush. I would like to think most of us tip the required amount (as a minimum), with a little extra when deserved.

We are first time cruisers heading to Iceland on Celebrity Eclipse at the end of June.

If you want to 'meet' some of your fellow cruisers there's a very active roll-call for your sailing. See http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2012065&page=25 That said there's a lot to read. We're nearing 1000 posts.

  2. I'm highly allergic to peanuts and tree nuts so I'm guessing there will be some days when the flavor options for me are few. OK - I can accept that. I'll make up for that on the other days, I'm sure.:D

I noticed your comment about your nut allergy. My daughter carries an epi-pen for the same reason. The following information may well be inaccurate now (present day) but in 2012 the cookies served in the ocean view cafe were cooked using peanut oil. Even regular plain ones. This policy could have changed in the intervening years, but if you are tempted to indulge I suggest you check first. In my daughter's case they made her up her own batch of cookies, free of peanut oil or risk of cross contamination from other nut products. It was a lovely gesture.

  3. Thanks. I tried that and finally it took me to the excursions page. So far so good then I wanted to buy some on board credit so got as far as inputting how much I wanted then got a page to complete my reservation number, sail date etc. I did that then got the message that it did not recognise my reservation number !!!. Rechecked and yes it was the correct number so tried again and got the wait for 20 minutes message ! Come on Celebrity this is ridiculous.

I'm having the exact same problem. Trying to buy some OBC and the system doesn't recognise our reservation. it's beyond frustrating.

  4. I just booked Cabin 7184, Sunrise Deck, on the Solstice.

Are you sure that's the correct stateroom number. According to the deck plans for Sunrise 7184 is an inside!

The X to which folk are referring is, I believe, a type of film which has been applied to the balcony glass of the cabins which make up the hump on the side of the ship. From a distance anyone looking back at the ship will see the letter X reflected back at them.

Here are photos (taken by Aquahound) which have been posted on other threads discussing the X obstruction.

Here is the photo showing the glass with part of the "X" from the inside.

I'm not sure, but if your stateroom is 7284 (and not 7184) as stated then I don't "think" you will be affected at all.

  5. Hi,

We have staterooms 7231+7235 for the sailing which leaves on the 7th August. Both will be partially affected by the X on the balcony glass.

I'll let you know what we thought once we get back. For all that I think the fact that our view will not be obstructed by the lifeboats below will more than compensate for the fact that the X is there. Most of the time when I look out at the horizon I am stood up against the railing of the balcony... of which the X will play no part.

  6. My mother who was travelling with us was taking an inordinately long time to get dressed for dinner. We knocked on her cabin door at intervals to be told she would be ready soon. Eventually she appeared but looked very hunched up, stooped... bent over!! It was if she had suddenly lost a couple of inches in height. Now struggling to walk down the corridor, I asked was everything all right. When she told me, I giggled for hours (indeed I still smile to this day).

The dress she was wearing was styled so it had a dropped waist i.e. the waist sat level with her hips. To facilitate hanging, it had two thin ribbon cords attached to the inside waist of the dress which you then hooked over the arms of a coat hanger. My mother for some reason thought these ribbons were straps of some sort which needed to be worn and had put her arms through them. Given that they weren't very long they were pulling her shoulders down. I honestly don't know how she had managed it in the first place. In the end we had to cut her out of the dress.
