  1. Just because i have to vent.  My Jewel 8/8/21 was cancelled and was trying to move it to 8/5/21.  Basically the same route, but Costco was told the funds are locked up and it was a NextCruise, so he can't get any resolution from RC.  Then I asked about the FCC from this summer, and was told that it takes RC 45-60 days to regenerate the FCC so i can use it again.  So i can book it as standalone, but between the deposit and FCC, I'll have a lot of unused money just sitting there.  Ughhhhh.  I asked RC why they are making it difficult to take my money.  1st world problems, i know. 😬

  2. i actually booked through Raccoon Tours via paypal, but when i was looking this summer at the end of June. I noticed the deposit page xmiting your info was not a secure site.  I felt very uneasy about that and booked via 3rd party as i did a few years ago.  So while it might not have been them directly, the people on the eCommerce side didn't get things secured properly.

  3. Sometimes it's not the port being blocked that causes a problem, but the high latency of the satellite connection.

If you do get a chance to test OpenVPN on VOOM, please report back.

Will do, we only have 1 sea day, so hopefully any issues that arise I can take care of either local internet or via ATT or Verizon access. I might also see if I can tweak any firewall settings to allow for a slightly better connection.

  4. That might be stretching to do all of it in one day if you're driving and don't have good routes planned. By my 6th day on the island, I was a champ. Days 1-3 I was very nervous with the lack of signage and trying to drive on the other side.

  5. We spent a week in Barbados a few years back and did a snorkeling trip on Sail Calabaza one day. We are doing the 11/27 cruise and I signed up with them again. They limit to 12 people so you never feel crowded as I saw on many other boats.

For other trips that might be available, we did animal flower cave on the north shore as well as the Wildlife Preserve where I got in a fight with a monkey who stole part of our lunch. In my defense, I told my daughter not so set all the food out. Everyone got a good laugh as I was trying to get it back from him.

  6. I had an agreement with all my kids and it worked well until yesterday morning when I opened the adjoining room door to discover my DD and her friend were not in the cabin and beds haven't been slept in. A cold sweat, panic and terror ran though my mind as well as every possible worst-case scenario. A quick search of all the topside spaces and restaurants turned up nothing. Customer service was helpful and security was on top of the issue. I was frantically dialing both of their cell numbers and just as they were about to stop the ship and make an announcement as we were pulling into port, they finally answered and casually said they were headed to breakfast with friends. So while rules work, sometimes the mind of a 16yo just doesn't register all the facts. I was so mad I didn't even talk to her the entire 5 hour drive home. As her reward, I cancelled her appointment to take her driver's test on Friday. She can continue to walk for the rest of the summer.

  7. We had Crystal Geyser and just got off Navigator yesterday and I had 10 bottles leftover in my mini-fridge that I took home with me. I think I averaged 9-10 bottles a day (even got the nickname "Waterman" in a few bars). I drank plenty of shipboard water too, but it's harder to put an open cup in your pocket and walk around. I saw people with cases and luggage tags so either way it should work to what you are working on.

  8. The Navy used a lot of GE LM2500's for main propulsion systems and Allison 501K-17 & 34's turbines for electrical generation. The main turbines were all enclosed and if a new one was needed, they pulled it out of the air intake. Takes about 10 hours and can be done pier side.

I liked the pods as I see the ease as to move a ship that size. The Navy actually uses a reversible pitch implementation on the screws to adjust the thrust so that the shaft continues the same direction and allows the ship to move forward, reverse or neutral, but don't have the ability to have any side thrust. Of course, the ships have their own purpose in life.
