Kinda wish the US would just stop the PVSA nonsense; we really have no use for Canada on the Alaska side of cruising; it's mostly just a waste of a day that could be better used elsewhere. The east coast is the only side with ports in Canada people actually choose a cruise in order to visit (OK, that may be stretching it just a little; not sure that many people care about those ports vs just the cruise).

Not true, we went to the west coast, Vancouver, twice and we enjoyed it.   Yes I do enjoy the East Coast too.    Loved Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.   I would go back to both the West and east Coast.

Sunday morning outing to the Western Treatment Plant outside Melbourne. All sorts of birds, and some other things. Most with the lens at 600mm

    That's it. This isn't a contest.

All photos taken this week are welcome (not just cruising).

Prizes will not be awarded. Discovering the joy of photography is the prize.

The idea is to get folks out using their cameras for more than vacations and toddler birthdays.

Post one. Post many. Up to you.

Have fun with your camera and share your fun with others!

As always your photos are fantastic   😍

  4. You always take awesome photos. Amazing.

  5. I'm a daily shooter. I never leave home without a camera. But I haven't shot anything interesting lately. So all I have to submit is a simple picture of a geranium filled Terracotta pot sitting in my front landscape that I took this morning with my Olympus E-P1 using the Pin Hole filter.

WOW, I love this photograph This make me want to go back out an snap some photos. I have been slacking off a bit. But I am getting that urge to go out and snap, snap, and snap some photos. Thanks for sharing.

  6. But you might still have salmon running some places the end of August. I love the salmon runs.

That sounds interesting. Last time I went to Alaska was in early August and we lucked out weather wise. And I love salmon.

  7. When we went two years ago we asked that question of our bus driver on the way to Mendenhall Glacier. He was a retired police officer that had been coming to Juneau for several years to work in the summer. His recommendation was to come early in the season. He felt that part of the whole experience is the attitude of the seasonal workers who run your tours, wait tables and work the shops. At the beginning of the season they are happy to be there and to be of help. By September they just want it to be over and go back home.

Thanks for the reply I will have to talk tis over with my family.

  9. In terms of what? Weather? Crowds? Fares?

If you look around the board all of these are addressed. Weather is generally cool and dry in May, colder in September (we had snow on Labor Day one year) Fares in may are similar to September. Crowds as well.

Memorial Day weekend is the ramp up to the summer season, Labor Day is the wind down.

In terms of weather and fare which do you recommend?

  10. Which is better in your opinion, next May the Memorial Day week or September the Labor Day week I was in Alaska during the end of August several years back. Just wondering if the beginning of the summer or the end of the summer is better? Just wanted other cruise critic members thoughts and ideas. Thanks :)

  11. We had recently gone to my wife's high school reunion in Connecticut. All weekend in the middle of nowhere so I brushed the dust off my circular polarizing filter as I sat by the lake and relaxed after the drive.

There is a beautiful little cemetry at my wifes old school and I had only brought one lens on this trip, my 24-105 f4. While a great lens, f4 is not the best for creating a nice soft blur in the background. So, while my wife was saying good bye to old friends I was playing around using focal length to help get the blurred background I was looking for. In hindsight the composition is not great but I did get a bit of background blur.
