In 2011 I did a barge trip in Province mostly on the Rhone, on an Orient Express 12-person luxury barge comparable to FCW and loved it! I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Yes, it's expensive, but you get five star food and drink and wonderful experiences. Ours wasn't a canal cruise where you can bicycle alongside the boat, as we covered more distance and the pace was not as slow and. more excursion-oriented. To help us pick the right trip for us and our friends (we went with another couple, which I recommend for a very small barge), we used The Barge Lady, who knows all the different lines and barges and was indispensable. You can search for her online.
Enjoy! I know you will. It's a delightful change from the 100+ passenger river cruises.

I am doing this cruise on the AmaVida starting next week, with one extra day in Lisbon and the 3-day AMA Lisbon package that includes Sintra, and will post a full review, either as we go along or when I return. I've gotten so many tips from CC for our cruises that I want to be helpful to others as well. I also do a trip journal which I email to friends with a few photos of the day (and it will be the basis for whatever I post on CC). If you are interested in getting it, you can provide me your email. Apparently CC no longer has the private message function; at least I can't find it anymore! :( Be sure to spell it out as follows to prevent being picked up by a spambot: [emailname] at [domain] dot [com. net etc.]

Fred111, You mentioned rain while you were in Lisbon. What was your weather the rest of the trip? :confused:Thanks. I'm packing soon for my AmaWaterways Douro cruise.

Fred, I am taking the Ama Douro cruise starting 10/10. Was the hop on hop off worth it, or did it cover a lot of the same things the half day city tour the cruise company does? I've been to Lisbon before (35 yrs ago on my honeymoon!), my friend hasn't (we're doing a girlfriends trip this time). I thought with our free day before the tour starts we'd go to Cascais/Estoril, as I remember enjoying that. Appreciate your input.

Thanks for all the information. We have a group of 8 going on this cruise in October. We are doing the pre and post cruise additions, we can't wait.....thanks again
Also going in October, starting in Lisbon on the 11th. When are you going, Rich?

One thing I forgot to mention about our AmaVida Douro cruise: tips at the end of the cruise must be made in cash - no credit cards.
Can you use shipboard credit for tips? I am doing this trip in October and took part of our travel agent's rebate as a shipboard credit--specifically to use for tips. I'll want to change that if possible if that's not possible. What else is there use it for onboard? Almost everything else is included, right?
Thanks!

Much has been posted on various boards about getting local currency. However, I can find nothing recent about locations of ATMs at Kastrup. We arrive the 5th of June at 10 pm via British Air into Terminal 2. When I search Kastrup ATMs, the info I found says ATMs are in Terminals 1 and 3. Should I get some Danish Kroner in the US before leaving, for the taxi to the hotel (the Admiral) and to get us started in the morning?
Many thanks for up to date information.

Let me add my thanks for this great walking tour and tips. I'll be in Tallinn in June and have saved your itinerary.

Fred, Appreciate the additional information. Weather.com shows 40-60% chance of rain most days on the Douro. Hope we have your experience instead, especially as everyone raves about the wonderful scenery. It will be great regardless!
I'll post a review when I return, if not along the way.
Cheers!
