  1. That's going to be really tight. The second bedroom is a tiny self-contained inside cabin with a small bathroom and closet space for one, maybe two if they pack light. I'd give this room to your mother so that she has her privacy. The fold-out bed in the living room is fine for a 12-year-old, but could be uncomfortable for an adult.

Even if they are not in a Villa, you can still spend a lot of time together on the ship. They won't be able to join you for breakfast and lunch in Cagney's, though, but I learned last week that they can debark with you at the end of the cruise.

  2. We booked all of our excursions through NCL and would do it again. I would, without hesitation, recommend visiting the Church on Spilled Blood as a scheduled stop as opposed to doing it on your own. We got a lot of time there and had fantastic narration by our tour guide. Just be on the lookout for street thieves -- one of our busmates had one of his camera lenses ripped right out of his hand as he was changing lenses.

I have not done the Waterways tour yet heard great reviews.

  3. The first option gives you a wider variety. Alesund might be the most charming European city we've been to while Bergen in itself has so much history. And, as others have said, there is the majestic Geirengerfjord. I don't think you could go wrong with either one, as Oslo (from what I hear, haven't been yet) is also lovely.

Essiesmom makes a great point about logistics. If it were me, I'd opt for the second option for that reason.

  4. Good advice. Thank you. :)

I'm thinking of getting one of the new Microsoft Surface Pro lightweight devices. Can serve as good travel laptop as well as tablet.

Sail, I am very happy with my Microsoft Surface Pro. I use it for my freelance work as it's so easy to transport. It takes a little while to get used to a smaller screen, so I suggest purchasing it at least a few weeks before your trip.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  5. NORWEGIAN DAWN

    PASSENGER (CRUISE) SHIP

    NEXT PORT BERMUDA

    ETA MAY 31, 21:00

    IMO 9195169

    SPEED 19.8

I hope this eta is wrong . 21:00 is kinda to late to navigate the reef , ain't it ??

MarineTraffic (AIS) reports in UTC, so 21:00 would be 6:00 pm in Bermuda.

  6. There is currently a large gray vessel in the Boston drydock of which you mentioned. I can't make out it's name or if it belongs to the navy. Maybe that's why they went to Philadelphia.

I was in the area a few days ago and there is a large military ship in the Boston dry dock -- so I guess Philadelphia was the first one with available space.

  7. That is a good question, Vineyard View. In my experience, NCL does a great job with its non-suite guests, as well. (We've had both.)

We were on Norwegian Star in 2013 in a balcony cabin and on Veendam last week in a standard oceanview. We also had a balcony cabin on Westerdam in 2012. As for suites -- Maasdam in 2011 and Ryndam a couple of years before that; Norwegian Jade (2BR suite) in 2010.

IMO, the differences were very minor. On NCL, we enjoyed the flexibility of the specialty dining rooms (some of which have no additional charge), yet also felt the service in the MDR was much better than on HAL. NCL is far superior to HAL in managing the anytime dining -- they've been doing it for more than 10 years and have it down pretty well. HAL is still catching up in that regard.

Also, the production shows on NCL are superb, IMO, although HAL's small-venue entertainment has always excelled.

We have been alternating HAL and NCL for the past few years and are satisfied customers on both.
  8. This one's not so straightforward. If THIS is your cruise (based on your signature), I'd be pretty certain that the first formal night will be after you leave Bar Harbor as departure is pretty early.

I would also think that the second formal night will be on the same day you cruise the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

  9. We cruise in two weeks from today and this would make a very unpleasant DW as she is a fishivore and orders it nightly ...

We disembarked Veendam yesterday and, as others have confirmed, salmon is always available.

I am also a pescetarian, and found the fish very good from appetizers to entrees. I had fish for five of our seven nights (vegetarian the other two). Some of my favorites were -- in Pinnacle Grill -- braised scallop over pumpkin pudding, halibut and shrimp scampi.

In the main dining room -- lobster/cod cake appetizer, and twin lobster tails. (I asked about surf and turf without the turf, and got two lobster tails.) The always-available salmon was excellent, as well.

While I did not order this, Canaletto offered sea bass.

    Enjoy your cruise!
