  1. As a consequence of the corona crisis, the release of the 2021/22 series is delayed. Originally this new series consisted of six tiles. Due to the sale of the Amsterdam, Maasdam, Veendam and Rotterdam (VI) the series was reduced to four tiles. This time HAL has chosen for depictions of sea monsters. The corner ornamentations refer to the crown of the Statue of Liberty in New York. The tiles can be found on the bilingual website www.tonrijppaert.nl . My collection consists of 404 Holland America Line tiles and 8 tile tableaus. As soon as the Zaandam and Volendam start cruising again, I will place the fourth tile on the website.

  2. For more than 60 years the Holland America Line is a valued customer of Royal Goedewaagen. During that period Royal Goedewaagen made a wide variety of products, ranging from vases, bowls, plates, Delft blue tiles and more.

Once more in 2018 the Goedewaagen Museum will exhibit a large diversity of their Holland America Line products. Part 1 of the 2016 exhibition was allocated to the tile and tableau collection of Ton Rijppaert in The Netherlands (tonrijppaert.nl). His website is bilingual and all further information can be found there. In part 2 beautiful HAL pieces from the enormous collection of Clive Hellinga from the island of Schiermonnikoog (The Netherlands) can be seen. Clive is one of the top three maritime collectors in the world. His collection includes ceramics dating from the initial Holland America Line period (1873 -) with beautiful pieces from Faïencefabriek Holland-Utrecht in Gouda, Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland in Gouda en Potterij Rembrandt in Nijmegen.

The exhibition will be opened January 7, 2018.

In cooperation with curator Friggo Visser from the Keramisch Museum Goedewaagen (text) and well-regarded maritime historian dr. Nico Guns (publisher) a full color book about both exhibitions is in progress.

  3. New Mariner Collection tiles 2017-2018

After the two previous series, issued asDelft blue reproductions of oil paintings of the present cruise fleet bymaritime painter Stephen J. Card, the Holland America Line has choosen again for more progressive graphicdesigns from Goedewaagen designer Sander Alblas for the 2017-2018 series (7pieces). In these new designs Alblas has incorporated in a playful manner shipportraits of the different cruise classes together with the constant changingline profile of hotel New York, the former headquarters inRotterdam.

The new 2017-2018 tiles from the MarinerCollection series, presently consisting of 147 pieces, can be found on mywebsite www.tonrijppaert.nl

The website is bilingual and shows 350tiles thus far collected. Every first day of the month the picture on thehomepage will be renewed and on the first day of every month I make an updatewith a further description in the menu News, depending on eventual new acquisitions.Comments, suggestions or report of missing tiles are most welcome.

Inmy collection I miss four world voyage tiles: Rotterdam 1995 (segment 4),Prinsendam 2006 (Circle of the Sun, segment 3, on the website you see theartist impression) and two oval tiles of the Amsterdam 2011 (also artistimpression) and 2014. You see them on my website in the menu World Voyages. Ihad contact with mr. Geralt Bernhoft, president of the Mariner Society; he wasvery willing to find out if HAL has these tiles, but the answer was no. UnfortunateyHAL has no idea how many tiles were ever handed out, there is no properadministration. May be you know anyonewho has one or more of the missing tiles. You can always contact me via thewebsite. I also noticed several President’s Club members on this board, hopefully they can help me finding the missing tiles.

    Happycruising to all of you,

  4. I understand that HAL is starting with the issue of the new series of Mariner Tiles? I noticed a picture of the new series on Facebook somewhere.....

You probably found the picture on the Dutch site (via Facebook) "Vrienden die Holland America Line leuk vinden" (Friends who like HAL). In a few days the new series (at this moment 6 pieces) will be published on the bilingual website of Ton Rijppaert from the Netherlands (tonrijppaert.nl). He has the world's largest HAL tile collection of about 350 pieces.

    .

  5. WOW, what a beautiful tile.

As you know Holland America Line hands out ceramic Delft Blue tiles in various forms and shapes, as part of their Mariner Society Rewards Program. Since there is no accurate administration, it is not exactly known how many different tiles have been produced on behalf of the company. On my website http://www.tonrijppaert.nl you can find an accurate inventory of the HAL tiles. The website is bilingual and shows 320 tiles thus far collected. Every first day of the month the picture on the homepage will be renewed and in the first week of every month I make an update with a further description in the menu News, depending on eventual new acquisitions. Comments, suggestions or report of missing tiles are most welcome.

Yesterday, the ms Rotterdam started a 17 day cruise to the Canary Islands. My wife Frieda and I booked this cruise. With the cooperation of HAL Rotterdam an exhibition was planned to show my entire collection of HAL tiles. Unfortunately we had to cancel the booking, due to family circumstances. There sure will come an other opportunity.

But of course I would like to buy this tile, if anyone of you has a double one.

please contact me through the form on my website.

Happy cruising to all of you,

Regards from a cold but Sunny Rotterdam,

    Ton Rijppaert.

  6. Hartstikke goeie web site, bedankt!/Awesome website, thanks!

Wow Copper, 1264 days at sea with HAL. You also must have a lot of tiles. Perhaps you made the Amsterdam World Cruise 2011? The first time that Royal Goedewaagen designed oval tiles, and just this one I don't have in my collection! Again Bon Voyage. Ton.

  7. We love Delft Blue (and have visited Delft). We look forward to the tile on each voyage and have quite a few around the house! Great website - I forwarded to my dad who still can read and speak Dutch.

Hello both of you. Thanks, it is always nice to receive a reply from people with Dutch roots. In a week I hope to update my website with a tile from 1913! Regards from a very windy Rotterdam.

  8. Hello Ton!

Have you got this one? ;)

    Stephen

Also thanks for your reply. No, I don't have this tile in my collection, but I have the photo of it. The tile is designed by a nice gentleman from Bermuda, a famous maritime painter whose paintings adorn the main staircases of the HAL fleet. I mentioned him in the menu Mariner Collection (series 2012-2014 and 2015-2016. I will send him a mail tonight. Also bon voyage to you! Ton.

  9. Great website!

Are the new tiles already being issued? I was hoping to complete the old series first!

I will be on board next week, hoping to maybe get the old tile, or even one of each?

I wasn’t expecting the new tiles until next year, with the addition of Koningsdam and probably revealing the name of the sister ship at the same time!

Thanks for your reply. Yes, HAL is now handing out the 2015-2016 series. Do you miss tiles in the 2012-2014 series (also the Stephen J. Card tiles)? Contact me on my website, and don't hesitate to do it in Dutch! Bon Voyage. Ton
