  1. Hi Everyone from the Sacramento, Ca area.  Thrak, I used to live in Chico, so I enjoyed your pictures.  The aisles look the same here.  I just know from internet pix, I haven't been out since March 13th.  Billco, thanks for the report of your walk on the American River.  The river runs right through the middle of Sacramento County.  The sun is shining again today, and for me that makes the day better.  My best wishes to you all.  Hang in there! (remember the old kitty poster?)

California is nuts. Here are a couple of pics from today's newspaper.

    The Pasta aisle in Safeway:

The Toilet Paper aisle in Safeway:

Some restaurants are doing take-out but others are closed. Stores - other than grocery stores - are mostly all closed. Libraries and theaters are closed.

Here's a shot of the mall parking lot:

The paper says that, so far, there are no confirmed cases in the county but we are in full post-apocalyptic mode. It's very weird. I thought I'd make a stew but there are no potatoes in the stores. I was going to make a pot of chili but there are no beans in the stores. It seems people are hoarding food and stuff. It seems a bit counter-productive to me to snatch up all the soap and sanitizer. That just means nobody else can keep clean so they will end up infecting those who took all the cleaning stuff.

We're just hanging out at home. We have food and wine. We have (had?) a month long camping trip planned but the campgrounds seem to be closing. Hoping all this clears up so we can take our November/December cruises.

The ship has 650 passengers and that gives you the advantage of getting to know your shipmates and the Princess staff.  despite it not having any of the bells and whistles of the bigger ships, she has a style and elegance that harkens back to the glorious days of cruising.  Being a smaller ship, she can get closer to destinations, too.  We docked a mile from the Heritage while the Grand had to dock a two-hour bus ride away.  She is, all in all, a great little ship.

Great information!  It sounds very appealing to me.  Thanks for the info from the Sacramento area.

I totally agree but Royal Caribbean CEO denied 3 requests from us - they took $1,065 from two seniors. Royal doesn’t understand what is happening and, how to treat loyal customers. They just wanted the cash!

I empathize with you.  Royal was slow to cancel our cruise (from Rome) so we cancelled.  We lost a lot of money, but its over.  It was like they were playing chicken, seeing who would cancel first.  It has been two weeks since we made our decision, and I feel better about the financial loss now.

I hear you and I agree with you.

I do think Princess should offer the option of future cruise credits. Normally, I agree with the argument that one should buy cruise insurance. But we are dealing with an unprecedented public health crisis, and Princess has proven not once but twice that they cannot guarantee their passengers' safety with regard to this epidemic. To encourage people who are in a high-risk group (elderly, compromised immune systems) to travel, or to take their money if they are too afraid to go, is simply unconscionable.

In addition, these decisions have a public health impact -- if people are infected on the ship they can infect others when they disembark. The governor of California has declared a state of emergency due to Covid-19 and the public cannot afford to allow Princess to be cavalier about public health and safety. There are many other airlines, hotels and cruise lines that are waiving cancellation fees because it is the right thing to do given these exceptional circumstances.

I completely agree. thank you for a well written post.

Hey Relaxedfun, what reason did Royal give you for wanting you to chg from the May 7th out of Rome? And what did they suggest? Interested b/c we’re sailing on Mediterranean later in May from Barcelona and my mom wants to cancel, but I’m hoping that Royal might agree to make a chg for a future sailing instead of us losing some $.

We cancelled March 4.  Royal called March 5 to sell me another cruise.  Asking me to spend more of my $$$$$, after getting $3000 from me yesterday for nothing.

They did not "want me to change".

Are you on the 3/22 Anthem sailing?

We WERE on  May 7, Explorer of the Seas,  Rome rt, first sailing after makeover.  Royal called this morning to sell us another cruise! (what does that tell you?) I told the agent how I feel about  the situation and she was very kind and understanding.  I could hear the clicking as she took notes and assured me she will pass it on to management.

  7. YES, WE ARE CANCELING.  Rome to Athens and return to Rome.  Fully paid, we will get 50% back.  Health (life) more important than money.  Peace of mind more important than money.  I have no hope that cruise line (not Princess) will cancel until the last minute, in  order to milk the last dollar from the customers.

We are sailing out of Barcelona in early May for a 12 day Med cruise with 4 stops in Italy. We are in the middle of the cancellation range such that if we cancel today, we only get 50% back. Next week that drops to 25%. It sure puts us in a tough spot.  And knowing the cruise lines, they will push the limit on keeping the sailings going until there is no such alternative.

    Not sure what to do.

I am in the same situation.  My cruise leaves from Rome May 7th.  Decide by Mar.6 = lose 3k, decide by April 6, lose 4.5k.  We are reading the news, cruise critic boards, and will get serious about decision on March 5.  Not sure what to do either.
