Sue, it is sad to hear that a relative died while on the World Cruise.  But a few details might make us understand what happened.  Saying "ill in Africa" is like saying "ill in North America".

Where did this happen?  Apparently HAL helped get him to a hospital.  What other help could HAL have provided him?  Was he sailing alone or did he have a spouse with him?

I am so sorry for your loss, and being away from home has to make it worse. Yes, we have been with or have have had friends that were very sick. Everything  they told us was that HAL was very responsive in getting them to a hospital as well as hotel accommodations, if needed, for their significant other.

    That was quick...

I don't see them on the HAL website.  Did you do it through your TA?

Yes, got an email from someone on 2023 wc and called my TA with the cruise information. We already had our $200 down just to hold it, not sure if that makes a difference. We knew this was coming, but had not seen the itinerary. He said the pricing would not be out till May, but we are guaranteed on there and the type of room we wanted (lanai).

  3. We are considering a Viking Ocean Cruise. What concerns me is the stampede towards the buses at the end of the “christening”. I would not have expected this from passengers on Viking, sounds more like Carnival!

It was not really a stampede, people were just getting on buses as quickly as possible. It was very cold that evening and some did not have warm jackets on, so everyone was in a hurry to get on. Some of us were fortunate enough to be able to walk back.

  4. We are also on the world cruise at this time. However, we did not come on the cruise only for the naming ceremony. Yes, it did not go the best, but it was only one thing out of many. There are always going to be ups and downs when you spend five months in one place. We are a small town. We had a speaker the other day, who is a member of cruise critic, and he ended his talk with something I thought was so important. He was a POW and when he left his prison he realized that he could not hate his captors or he would be poisoned for life, so as he left he forgave them and he said he then felt free. I think we need to think about that and realize that things will go wrong, but if we cannot forgive, then we will be the ones to suffer, not those that we feel have wronged us. This has been a great cruise and we have made some great new friends. Things have gone awry, but it has been a very memorable trip.
