  1. He never made it back because they kept paging him for 10 minutes and we saw a Princess agent stood outside with a copy of his passport waiting and waiting then the ship left. Not sure if he came back on the boat in the next port.

He came back in a police car around 4:30pm along with 2 people from the Norwegian Star. Apparently, he couldnt find his way back to the ship, and he joined these 2 other people that were lost, and asked the police for help. Unfortunately by the time they did make it back to the dock, the Princess has sailed. He even tried to ask if he could tag along on the NCL Star until next port, but they wouldn't let him on. Hopefully he made it back safely.

  2. Looks like you made the right decision to leave early before 8am. The lineup for taxi from 9am on was insane.

BTW, this is off topic, but we met someone from the Helsinki port who was supposed to be on the Emerald Princess, but missed the ship. Just curious if you know he ever made it back to the ship at the next port?

  3. We docked right across from the NCL Star at the Freeport cruise port. When we got out there were nobody waiting for the taxi and most of the people were gone. There was only 1 taxi when we came out and did not have to wait for 1 minute. I did notice that when the taxi got on the highway toward the last 10 minutes to the airport, the meter jumps by the second from 200 DKK to 378 DKK in 10 minutes. The meter jumps slower while riding in the city.

  4. Just got off the Emerald Princess yesterday and it was expensive to ride the taxi from the cruise port to the airport. I thought it would cost 250 DKK instead I ended up paying 378 DKK for a 35 to 40 minute ride. Ouch....

Should have taking the train then the metro to the aipport. It's 12 minutes walk to the train station which you can see the train from the upper deck from the cruise. How do I know that? We checked in early (11:30 AM) on May 23rd and walked to the Little Mermaid from the cruise because when we did the canal cruise we only saw the back of the Little Mermaid. The train station is on the right side after you exited the blue line through the little gate. It takes 40 minutes to walk to the Little Mermaid from the ship. Follow the rail track to exit to the gate is a bit faster then the blue line. Bus # 26 does not stop infront of the gate to the ship. It stopped about 2 blocks before the gate.

If you pay by Euro or USD, taxi driver will charge you another 25 DKK.

We walked off the ship @ 7:45 and most people have already left and there were no lines and was in the cab by 8:00 AM.

Which port were you docked at? We disembarked from Norwegian Star on June 2nd at 9am, and we ended up waiting in the taxi line for 2 hours before we were able to get a taxi. The taxi from freeport to airport was 495DKK in a minivan taxi. My parents were in a station wagon taxi that came out to about 400DKK. So the rate seems to be different depending on what size the taxi is.

The taxi lineup was due to the constructions around the port area, and taxis had a hard time getting into the port. According to the taxi driver, during the weekend, there was 6 cruise ships docked at the same time, and they didnt have any problem getting into port because there was no construction during the weekend. Had I known this information, I would have booked a cruise ship transfer to airport instead of standing in taxi line for 2 hours. We didnt consider the metro, because there was 15 adults + 1 baby, and we had a lot of extra luggages to carry.

  5. Not being a photographer, merely a point-and-snapper, I don't know much about the light required for good photos but can tell you that the sun goes down behind the terminal buildings, if that is any help!

The ferries run all day from early morning til late at night on a demand basis. There is no set timetable, two of them just shuttle back and forth every few minutes as required. Later in the evening the service is reduced to one which runs about every 10-15 minutes. Please remember that your local day ticket is valid on the ferry too.

    Anni.

Is it easy to find the ferry terminal? Will I be able to push a light stroller down the path to the ferry terminal?

    thanks

  6. Hi Jeremy, thank you for your appreciation.

You are correct in that the shops in Rostock will be closed on a Sunday but in Warnemünde the majority of the shops, especially those catering to tourists, will be open.

All attractions, museums, churches, historical sites, the Zoo etc. are open in both places as well as restaurants and cafes.

The best place to buy souvenirs is Warnemünde, either along the waterfront on the right after crossing the bridge or at Pier 7, the restaurant and shop next to the cruise terminal building.

A local day ticket bought from a machine on the platform or ticket office needs to be validated at the beginning of your first journey. It is only tickets bought on the bus or tram which are already dated and timed.

    Happy cruising :)

    Thanks for the information!

After reading your website, we are thinking of adding a visit tp Hohe Dune that you speak of on your webiste to get pictures of the cruise ships. Is it better to do this firs thing in the morning, or later in the evening? How often does the ferry run? Is there somewhere I can get the timetable?

    thanks!

  7. Hi Anni,

Thanks for all your information about Rostock and Warnemunde. It's been incredibly helpful in planning my trip.

My family and I will be porting in P7 at Warnemunde on Sunday May 26th. We will be traveling with our 8 months old son, so we decided to stay in Warnemunde/Rostock for a more leisurely trip compare to the long bus ride to Berlin. From my understanding, shops, museum, etc will be closed on Sundays. Can you suggest any place where I can buy souvenirs in either Warnemunde or Rostock? What about recommendations of things to do on a sunday?

Also, if i buy a local region day ticket for Rostock, do I need to validate the ticket as well?

Thank you very much for your help!

    Jeremy

  8. Hi,

the photos are real. The ferries have to come between the islands and it is indeed a very narrow passage.

In the winter when there are strong winds the ferries are delayed many times as the captain cannot take them safely through the passage before the winds slow down.

There will probably be other people there to see the ferries and the best place is in the south, near Kustaanmiekka.

From there you can see them approaching and then you can move (as they are not coming very fast) to a better spot for the next ferry (there will be two in the morning around 9.30-9.45 and one around 10.45).

I found this map on the suomenlinna website. How far south would I need to go in order to see the ferries pass by the islands?

  9. Thank you for asking this! We are on the NCL Star for this trip as well and we would like to from the ship to the Vasa first. I'm having such a hard time figuring Stockholm out for this trip that any info would be much appreciated - especially which bus to take, etc. It's so confusing and I don't know why. We'd also love to see the changing of the guards and visit the Gamla Stan.

I ended up finding the information on another thread:

If you do want to take the bus, you can buy a day ticket at Biz Apartment Gärdet AB.

    https://maps.google.ca/maps?q=Biz+Apartment+G%C3%A4rdet+AB&aq=f&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&sa=N&tab=wl

Based on their website, http://www.bizapartmenthotel.se/gardet-en/service/public-transportation/, they should have day tickets for the public transport.

Here's walking direction from the port Frihamnen to Biz Apartment Gardet AB.

    https://maps.google.ca/maps?saddr=Stockholm+Frihamnen+%4059.341700,18.119500&daddr=Biz+Apartment+G%C3%A4rdet+AB,+Sehlstedtsgatan+4,+Stockholm,+Sweden&hl=en&ie=UTF8&sll=59.341406,18.11236&sspn=0.017966,0.066047&geocode=FYR7iQMdTHsUAQ%3BFV56iQMdaF8UASF-b4RSrhYBByn5sZsbtYJfRjF-b4RSrhYBBw&oq=Biz&t=h&mra=ls&z=18

Here's the bus direction from the Biz Apartment to Gamla Stan.

    https://maps.google.ca/maps?saddr=Biz+Apartment+G%C3%A4rdet+AB,+Sehlstedtsgatan+4,+Stockholm,+Sweden&daddr=Gamla+stan&hl=en&ie=UTF8&sll=59.333671,18.09268&sspn=0.01797,0.066047&geocode=FV56iQMdaF8UASF-b4RSrhYBByn5sZsbtYJfRjF-b4RSrhYBBw%3BFf88iQMdPMETASkr-Z9m4ndfRjERixY19P4AJg&t=h&dirflg=r&ttype=dep&date=13%2F06%2F01&time=10:00&noexp=0&noal=0&sort=def&mra=ls&z=15&start=0

If you do take #76, you should get off at the stop right after the palace. You would need to check what time the changing of the guard is, and you should be able to walk around Gamla Stan.

Have you tried using google maps to do your public research? You can even select roughly what date and time, and it will give you all the options around that time.

This is the bus schedule for #76, unfortunately it is only in swedish.

    http://sl.se/ficktid/vinter/h76.pdf

From what I could tell, Page 1 to 3 gives you the time table from Ropsten–Norra Hammarbyhamnen, and Page 4 to 6 gives you the time table in reverse. Page 6 also has a lists of all the stops in either direction. The timetables only lists you the major stops highlighted in bold. It doesn't quite tell you what time it will get to Frihamnen, but it should give you a general idea how often the bus will run. On Saturday (Lordag) The bus runs every 30 mins before 10am, and then every 20 mins after 10am.

I actually did a lot of research, and was hoping to lead our group of 16, which include an 8 months old baby on the public transit. But the timing would be too tight to see all the sights that I wanted to see (Vasa, Gamla Stan, City Hall). So we ended up booking a tour thru a tour company.

    Best of luck!

  10. Looks ok to me but I hope you know you cannot get straight from Hernessari Port to Market Square with bus anymore. You'll either have walk part of the route or change to a tram. I have posted detailed instructions for that earlier in this thread.

Thank you very much. I will be sure to look for your info earlier in the thread. From what I could tell, I should be able to take bus 14, and then change to tram 3T.

  11. Hi all,

We have a group of 15 people + 1 child that's 8 months old. We will be porting in Helsinki on NCL Star on Friday May 31st at the Hernesaari Port. The ship arrives at 7am, and leaves at 5pm. I was wondering if the following itinerary is doable:

9am - Travel from Hernessari Port to Market Square, and then take Ferry to Suomenlinna, Helsinki, Finland

12pm to 1pm- Take Ferry back to Suomelinna, and have lunch

1pm to 2pm - Visit Uspenski Cathedral, Senate Square and Helsinki

2pm to 2:30pm - Photo Stop at Parliament House of Finland

2:30pm to 3pm - Photo Stop at Rock Church

3pm - Head back to Hernessari Port to board the ship

So do you think this itinerary doable?

Also, since we will be taking public transiti, will we be able to buy day pass from the bus driver?

    Thank you very much!

    Jeremy

  12. Hi,

I was wondering how easy it would be to get taxis at the cruise port to goto the airport? We have a group of 15 + 1 child that's 8 months old, and we would need to catch a 1:30pm flight back to Canada. Is it easy to find taxis at the cruise port? Or are we better of to book airport transport from our cruise line NCL.

    Thanks!

  13. this is our ship but i can't figure out the port. can you?

  14. We really want to see the island vaxholm via http://www.waxholmsbolaget.se/

for 75 krona, there is a boat from stromkajen to vaxholm. approx 1hr.

the problem is, we're not sure yet where our cruiseship (ms rotterdam) will dock. it would be helpful to know so that we can plan how to get to the stromkajen terminal.

does anyone know how i can figure out where our cruiseship will dock in stockholm?

You can try this website to figure out which port you will dock in stockholm.

  15. There is an overhwhelming of information in this thread, so I apologize if this question has been asked already.

We will be porting in Stockholm on Norwegian Star on Saturday June 1st. I believe we will be porting at the Frihamanen port.

If I am not mistaken, the bus driver does not sell bus tickets. So where can I buy the bus tickets at Frihamanen port? What are the different ticket option available?

We are still trying to figure out where to go, but for sure Vasa Museum and Gamla Stan. If we only goto these 2 places, is it better to pay for each trip seperately, or should we get a day pass for the transit?

    Thank you very much!

  16. Its probably better to pick it up at the airport.

Both the information center and DSB ticket counter will sell them.

    ...

    Transport to ship.

Thank you very much for the information!

Which terminal is the information center and DSB ticket counter located? Our plane land at Terminal 2 at 7pm at night, will they still be open?

  17. Danish Viking,

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer everyone's questions. This thread has been a wealth of information!

My family and I will be staying in Copenhagen from May 22nd to May 25th pre cruise, and then we will start our curise on NCL Star on May 25th. Will there be enough time to order the Copenhagen card online and mail it to Canada, or would I be better off picking up the card at the airport?

Since we arrived on the 22nd at 7pm, would you be able to recommend any restaurants that my open late around The Square where we are staying.

We would like to see little mermaid, Nyhavn, stroget, Rosenberg Castle, Christianbord Palace and whatever else we could fit in a 2 day itinerary (still researching). Any suggestions for a 2 day itinerary?

Will I be able to find free wifi around the city?

    Thank you in advance!
