  1. We have been watching the weather but it never occurred to us to watch the river level. At least we can pack for the weather!

We are on Viking Amsterdam to Basel next week and are prepared for cooler temperatures and showers.

I appreciate all of the information about castles and the river experience that I have found here. Thank you!

    Enjoy your trip!

  2. Anyone know what going on with the update/notice on Viking site for Rhine River Cruise - no explanation, as it has with the Kembs lock due to maintenance etc)...

    RHINE RIVER

    AMSTERDAM-RHINE CANAL

    • September 3rd Rhine Getaway aboard Viking Alruna
    • September 3rd Grand European Tour aboard Viking Bragi
    • September 10th Grand European Tour aboard Viking Alsvin
    • September 10th Rhine Getaway aboard Viking Tialfi

  3. Notamermaid,

When we were they in July, we took the walking tour of Basel and the guide led us to a lookout over the Rhine... We saw dozens of people floating down the river. We were surprised but she said on a hot day that is what people there do to cool off.

Not only the fact that they were floating but we wondered how they got back (swim up river with that current didn't seem possible.)

  4. Dear M&Rsquared,

Welcome home! We are happy to hear that you were able to connect with your relatives and do hope you enjoyed your overall experience.

Your disappointment in the Mosselle Excursion has been noted and we sincerely apologize for any miscommunication about the expectations of the tour. We are, however, delighted to hear that you found the guide and wine to be excellent.

As always, if you are interested in reviewing your feedback with a Viking representative, you are welcome to reach out to us directly at TellUs@vikingcruises.com.

Looking forward to seeing you again soon, M&Rsquared!

    Kind regards,

    Viking Cruises

Talked with Viking representative today. Stacy was kind, considerate and apologetic for the troubles we had on our Viking Cruise. Needless to say, we absolutely enjoyed our cruise, we just had a few "blips" that we discussed. Thanks Viking!

  5. We met our relatives - thanks to you and they are great people.

BIG disappointment on our Mosselle excursion by Viking as they had described the tour (phone call) as going to Cochem and Beilstein. Wrong, it only went as far as Winningen. As you know, Cochem is 30 miles from Koblenz and we went about six miles to Winningen.

The tour was nice, but shot. The guide was informative but the tour was not as expected. The wine was excellent, we bought two bottles which we managed to get home.

The weather was hot in Lucerne and Basel. But needed light jacket, sweater, and earmuffs for the Rhine Gorge. My husband did state I have a VERY narrow comfort zone!

  6. ... and then we went on to Koblenz and offered a coach trip to Cochem.

The scenery was lovely - often through rain, but I love the sea so I think we have made our decision.

    Hello,

I would like your opinion of the Moselle bus trip please. How long did it take, what route did you take, where did you stop, where was wine tasting, etc/

    Thank you

    Notamermaid,

Thank you for all the wonderful and educational links... and your day to day input.

  7. M&Rsquared,

that is a pity about the castle. I wonder if it might be better if Viking altered the trip to leave out the wine tasting and add the castle instead. After all, you can just go into a shop in Beilstein and buy some wine... It sounds a bit much and not having the opportunity to go into a castle right where you are could be a potential disappointment.

If you are going on this optional I would be happy to hear your comments about it.

    Hi!

I'm not to crazy about the wine tasting so the castle tour would be nice. Rick Steves' who stars in PBS "Rick Steves' Europe" suggests trying Roter-Weinbergs-Pfirsich Likör — a cordial made from the small, tart "red peaches" unique to the Mosel Valley. Link:

I will let you know "my opinion" if I take this trip.

  8. I did not see a mention of a castle tour in the trip description. Is that included?

While not as difficult as Marksburg, there are stairs in the castle and a fairly steep walk from the parking area.

Sorry, there is no tour of castle (a photo stop). I called Viking and they said the trip would take us to Cochem and Beilstein plus the wine stop.

I looked up Cochem and saw the magnificent castle and thought... it would be nice to see.

thank you to not a mermaid (jpalbany) and to notamermaid for your comments.

One week from today we fly to NY then next day JFK-ZRH.

  9. Notamermaid,

Question/OPINION: Viking is offering tour; Journey upriver into Moselle Wine Country. Explore the small villages and steep hillsides that produce some of the finest Rieslings in the world. You will head up the winding Moselle River by coach. All around you, terraced vineyards climb dramatic slopes, the walls of a deep valley cut by the river. During your journey, you will pass through typical Moselle landscapes, with some vineyards squeezed in small spaces between cliffs. Along the Moselle’s shores, lovely riverside villages are home to half-timbered houses and to wineries that produce the sweet white wines for which this region is known. During your excursion, you will stop at a local winery for a tour and tasting.

Googled map of Koblenz to Cochem to Beilstein - it takes an hour to get there so I presume an hour back :o. Not much time for photo stop then wine tasting... but I'd love to see the Cochem Castle... YOUR OPINION PLEASE.

I would do this in place of the Marksburg Castle (ankle problems).

AGAIN, I would like to thank you for all your insight / history lessons and water level information.

    Marcella

  10. notamermaid,

I've been looking at the webcam in Koblenz. I noticed what looks like tents placed at Deutsches Eck.

any idea what the occasion is?

while I was typing this I went back to the webcam(5:22am your time) and the area looks like it is fogged in.

I too would like to thank you for all the information you provide.

  11. Again, thanks so much for these reports. We are booked for a Basel to Amsterdam cruise starting June 26, so I'm hoping for some drier weather coming up.

Sent from my iPad using Forums mobile app

Yes, thanks for all the information notamermaid.

Trying to help out as you did mimmy52. Enjoyed your review of Rhine River cruise so much. We are going July 17th. Staying at Radisson Blu also. Thanks for all your help by posting.

  13. About Dymale: The lady with the name Dymale works for an institution in Mainz, that is why I found her, you can look her up and send her an email, it is online. Just google Dymale and Mainz (and/or Horchheim).

Oh.. what a small world, that is the same person my brother-n-law has been in contact with but lost her in the shuffle.

    Thank you!

  14. I'm also putting 2 + 2 together and surmising there must be a link between the Rhinelanders of Germany and Rhinelander' date=' Wisconsin where I have family living. I will look into that and see why that name was chosen. Its quite curious because the area is largely associated with Native American history and many of the town names reflect that. /quote']

My husband is from Wisconsin and a few years ago we visited Rhineland and went to the Hodag Museum - of course we bought one too for his office!

His family is of good German stock (no offense) his parents are 93 / 92 yrs old and will be married 70 years 4 May.

Notamermaid: Thank you for your excellent updates and history.

Are there any folks in your neck of the woods with the last name of Dymale?

  15. Notamermaid,

Thank you for all the posts.

My mother-in-law made Lebkuchen's for our Christmas present. She is 92 (Good German Stock) [hope no one is offended].. married 70 years to my father-in-law who is 93 (also German!)

Might have to buy some "real" Lebkuchen while on our trip on the Rhine in July.

I pray you return to good health soon.
