Just to clarify, the slowness of the connection is most probably due to poor internet speed...not unusual in the middle of the Atlantic where satellites are sparse. The WiFi speed shouldn't vary with the ship's location, as it is fixed by the WiFi routers and their bandwidth and that can vary because of the number of simultaneous users on-board.

We will be on the Riviera on the Rome to Miami trip next month. We have not done a transatlantic before. Will we have any internet while in the middle of the Atlantic? We don’t need streaming or zoom; just access to websites and doing some work on them.

good morning, 1985rz1. I just took a peak at some of your photography. I sent you FB friend request. I can’t recall how to do Messaging in Cruiecritic.

    Hi all-

We were on the Ocean Princess on her last transatlantic- Rome to Florida the first part of December, 2015. We love transatlantics and have done several in both directions. We even took an upsell to a full suite- front cabin port side. Everything was wonderful- ports, cool weather, Christmas shopping in the ports. That is until we started across from Madeira to Bermuda. Seven days (seemed like more but I think that is correct) of gale force wind and heavy seas. We are not usually bothered by rough seas but the combination with the location of our cabin and the constant rolling just about finished us.

First- consider your cabin location. Usually we love the bow location but much more movement there. One of our neighbors was given another cabin to sleep in. Consider mid-ship and lower deck, especially if movement bothers you.

Second- bring seasick medication. Really helped- along with spending some time in the center of the ship during the worst of the rolling.

But did we enjoy the crossing? Yes- the seas were beautiful to watch and so interesting.

Would we do it again? Of course! In fact, we are on the Rome to Florida sailing this December. Can't wait!

Regarding the weather- bring layers and especially a good raincoat. Weather was warmer near Florida and everyone was ready for that.

    Hi there,

I just read about the Rome to Florida crossing you did a while back in December. How did it go? Did you encounter rough seas? We are booked to go from Rome to Miami on Dec. 7 of this year.

    Thanks!

    Adrienne

  3. I was on the NCL Sun sailing from Jun 3 to June 7.

I was told that we will receive 50% of the fare paid in the form of a credit back to the original form of payment, regardless of who paid for it. The refund should be posted to my American Express by June 30. The 50% credit for a future cruise is supposed to be used by the actual passengers and will be an amount of 50% of the fare paid for the Cuba cruise and applied toward the cruise of your choice.

The Cuba visa charge of $75 each was refunded to my cruise charges onboard the ship along with the Cuba port fee of $14 each.

  4. Hi Westyone,

Yes, we are booked for Nov. 30 sailing. I've been following the crises on Facebook and on their blog. We are looking forward.

We are planning to purchase a wine package onboard. I was told that they will put names or cabin numbers on the bottles like other cruise lines do, and put them away until the next meal. They mentioned something about not wanting to worry about people having too much in their cabins which apparently has caused challenges for them in the past. It sounds like a safety issue on this type of cruise.

It will be a strange feeling to be so far away from the world and out of touch for the most part, not knowing what is happening. I'm sure the ship will keep us updated on the news.

  5. Dear Digitl,

Thank you so much for your most thoughtful response. Unfortunately we do not have Marks & Spencer here in Atlanta. I will look at their products on line (if they show up) and will compare to similar ones here.

I grew up in Connecticut so the cold winter weather is understandable though I've softened quite a bit living in Atlanta. So far I feel as though I am on the right path for packing.

    What fabric were your thermals?

    Thanks!

    Adrienne

  6. ROLL CALL! The support folks at cruisecritic responded that they will suggest adding Hurtigruten to their Roll Call Tool. This is great news! I hope they do it soon. It will make finding Hurtigruten so much easier on this site. :)

Meanwhile, please add a reply if you are booked on the cruise listed in this thread, or if you are considering it. I would love to start a conversation with future fellow cruisers.

    Thanks all!

The cruisecritic.com Roll-call people responded back in January 2015 that they would suggest adding Hurtigruten sailings to the Roll-call tool.

    I am still waiting..........

  7. Ben and I would like to take a dear friend on her first cruise. She is in her 70's. We would prefer to have our own room even with the specials I keep getting in my email for 3rd and 4th passengers in the same room. I have heard that you can pair people to room together (though I don't think this would work for her). I have also heard that some of the cruise lines are becoming more accommodating in their pricing for singles to encourage them to travel.

I would appreciate any insight you may have and if you know which cruise lines offer the best deals for this.

Alaska is on her bucket list, and is on ours as well. I think I've narrowed it down to the type of cruise and the month of May. Your help will help me figure out the ship!

Thanks! I look forward to any replies.

  8. Hello! I am starting a ROLL-CALL for the Hurtigruten FRAM voyage called:

Antarctica, Falklands & South Georgia - The Great Antarctic Expedition (2015)

It begins with an overnight stay in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Sunday, November 29, 2015. We fly to Ushuaia the next day, November 30, 2015, where we will board the MV Fram ship beginning our journey.

We are Ben and Adrienne. My cruisecritic name is eggydreams. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Please add to the thread and I will add your cruisecritic names to the Roll-Call list below.

    ROLL-CALL

    eggydreams - Ben and Adrienne

The cruisecritic.com web site still has no option for roll-call for Hurtigruten voyages. Please spread the word! Thanks! Adrienne

  9. Hi WisRiver,

What is your embarkation date on the Fram.

Cruisecritic is so frustrating. There is no roll-call option on here. It would be fun to start connecting with people on our trip. We leave Ushuaia for the Falklands on 11/30/2015.

  10. Hi azcruise. I finally have time to focus on our 11/28/2015 departure for the Fram Antarctic trip. Your detailed post has confirmed most of what I anticipated. This is our first Hurtigruten trip.

I still have a few question that perhaps you can answer:

Can you tell me the USD$ cost of the wines?

Is there room anywhere to hang a narrow, cloth shelf (IKEA)? They are great for organizing in a small space.

Is there laundry service or should I plan to wash my own things in the cabin?

Is it possible to remove the mattresses and lay them on the floor side by side? I imagine if there are rough seas as you described, it could be better if we plan to sleep on the floor!

Silly, but important...when off the ship, how difficult is it to find a place to relieve oneself?

Where did you change into bathing suits and did you just wrap up to go back to the ship or did you change back into your layers of clothing?

Did you sign up for the excursions well before your travel date? I want to go kayaking and hiking.

    Which outings are included?

Feel free to email me directly:

    Thank you!

    Adrienne

  11. No. I pulled up the number... It was Priceline...and I couldn't find hurtigruten on their site. I just booked it myself

    Hi again,

Yes, he answers Priceline and many others. It is a large company and he handles many under their umbrella. It might not hurt to give him a call and ask him what else he can do for you if you choose to let him take over the booking as I did. I get miles for my airline of choice, and he may also be able to add some onboard spending. It's worth a try! I also booked directly at first for the same reason you did.

    Good luck.
